I saw some reviews mentioning how the updated setting kind of jars with the very obvious 80's-90's plot stylings and source manga character designs.

I watched it and I enjoyed it, but personally I'd have liked it even more if each episode started with a historical flashback opening showing how each ancient-artifact-of-the-week was used/sealed/went amok in its original time prior to Arcam and other factions discovering it again. Something that gives context to the present time events, similar to one series I watched as a child, Relic Hunter with Tia Carrerre.

Ex. the crystal skull episode has a opening sequence in ancient Alexandria where the lighthouse keepers are instructed to unleash "the full power" of the famed Lighthouse against a sudden naval invasion.

They didn't do that flashback thing with each OOPArt (Except Crystal Skull), but gave exposition. OTOH, they did give some adaptation expansion though. Not that noticeable.

And I don't know, I'd say that the updated setting is a bit divisive when I looked around. In my group, they kind of don't mind the updated setting.

Understandable, although I personally felt a flashback would be more epic than exposition. Just a personal liking of mine.

Btw, who was the sinister transfer student at the end supposed to be? Is he also from the manga?
