God, Keiichi doesn't half go on... how long can one person talk about the ice cream shops in his old town?

Aah. I'm learning so many kanji through Higurashi. Maybe if I'm lucky I can beat the kanji prodigy in my Japanese class! ^^;;

I can't wait until I catch up to everyone else here, though with school that'll take forever.

So, I have got a little question here. I recently have found out about this program called AGTH that can translate some japanese games. I was wondering, anyone here know if this program works with Higurashi?

BTW, I haven't read this hole thread so I'm sorry if someone already asked this. =]

I doubt it- I've yet to find an automated Japanese translator that isn't laughable. Babelfish's attempts at Higurashi offered me some amusement... what kind of translator translates ore as we?

It, um, works, but the results aren't really worth the bother. If you want to get any sense and/or enjoyment out of the sound novels either get cracking on learning Japanese or wait for a translation patch.

Does AGTH actually work though? Because I can just put the words through a japanese word processor I have that doubles as a dictionary (which is what I've been doing for the Higurashi manga).

I suppose you could try and tranlate stuff, but seriously you won't know what's going on. For instance:

なあ、彼女に謝られている誰かさんよ。

translates (with babelfish) as:

"Everyone's umbrella which has apologized to her it is."

I mean come on...

I meant through a dictionary. I have a Japanese word processor that doubles as a dictionary. I'd be able to work through it slowly. I'm just asking if the program does indeed extract the text properly.

Would that line be "Naa, she's apologizing to somebody"?

My translation is "Look, someone’s apologising to her."

Not sure of that though.

"Hey, to the person whom she's apologizing to"
(literally "Hey, the someone who's being apologized to by her")

Keiichi is directing his words (well, in his mind) to the "person" (誰かさん, "someone" with a -san honorific) who the girl is apologizing to. The line after that is,

もういい加減に彼女を許してやれよ。
"Just forgive her already."

Does that clear things up? It's one of those lines that just don't transfer well to English because of the passive usage and reversed sentence structure.

Yeah, if all you want is the text hooking part then AGTH works perfectly

It most likely will, it's not exactly the biggest resource hog ever.

Also, I'd imagine the game woiuld work on almost any computer, given that is can play on a 400mHz processor with windows 98.

I tried installing the first game just to get a feel of it. While it was installing it gave me an error in gibberish (Windows 98 can't display Japanese characters apparently). Since the error was in gibberish there was no way to tell what went wrong. I hope the error was caused because of the text and not something else.

EDIT: The error happens on a txt file after it extracts the MP3s. Makes me wonder if it would work with a zip file with all the files already extracted.
