The Gainax effect

I am interested in labelling the process of making an anime out of a manga whilst completely changing the ending, character's psychological integrity, and plot-points. Has this already been done?

If not, then who here concurs with me that the act of doing such is destined to be called the "Gainax effect"?

For references see Kare Kano (His and Her circumstances) manga and Anime.

In my book, it's called the "Negima effect".

See Mahou Sensei Negima.

Which had nothing to do with Gainax whatsoever. Read up more on the subject of Anno's relationship with Hakusensha (the manga company).

I have some doubts that you have read the complete manga.

Kare Kano was faithful up to the volume of the manga that existed when the anime ended. After the Sports fest it was to be a whole arc about Tsubasa and her brother, but the anime didn't continue past that.

Don't blame Gainax for that. Gainax can be blamed for a lot of stuff. (Eva for one) but Kare Kano issues were pure politics.

Both FLCL and PPY ended pretty firm, so you cannot say Gainax effect. Mahoromatic's Ending was the Manga ending so you can't say that either.

More specifically, it should be called the "Xebec effect", considering how Xebec has been known to change various manga stories when it came to the anime.

Overall, it's known as a description for "shinya anime waku" (late night anime slot) shows.

If it's airing late at night around the 24~26:00 time slot (it can be on a large network, obscure UHF channel, or BS/CS satellite - doesn't matter) and is slotted for only 1 or 2 kur at most, it is likely to have an original ending. Anime based on ero/bishoujo games ends satisfactorily, however it tends to choose one character over another (usually the main heroine, but not always the case).

Didn't the Eva anime come out before the manga?

Yes. The manga is still being released, in fact. The mangaka in question works at a glacial pace, and the manga is not really the same story as the anime at all. It's a "re-imagined" version, which changes the character dynamics substantially. I don't like it much.

In that case, the "Gainax effect" is a completely inappropriate term, unless we're gonna use it to refer to a company continually squeezing a decade-old cash cow dry.
I support TnAdct1's "Xebec effect." How they managed to turn WIN into FAIL with Negima was unbelievable... though Disgaea is coming close.

How can you possibly say it's coming close? It just started.

Anyhow, what we need is a good list of shows who's anime and manga have both ended of which we can decide how many have actually had different endings. Because if one or the other hasn't ended yet, there's no saying the manga won't turn around and have the anime's ending.

I'd say it was more appropriate to call this theory of yours the "Gonzo effect".

While I agree Gonzo does change a lot of endings, I usually don't mind the changes.

I'll withhold my opinion of how much the Gantz Anime Ending sucks when I see the ending of the Gantz Manga.

Considering the mangaka went completely awol on the manga for 2 months I can no longer say the manga is superior.

Its hard to know how to end an anime, when there is no manga ending.

The best you can do is end the anime at the end of a manga saga (determine which one before you start) and hope that there are not too many unanswered questions (parts may need to be cut).
