Ow, an inauspicious start to a Saimoe week. I'm still a bit saddened by the sudden exit of one of my favorite Saki characters. Ein also lost. Still, I'm giving credit to Louise for winning. Funny that last year, she had 666 votes when she lost to Kyou. She gets two votes shy today and gets the win. So is the rematch with Kyou in order?

Looking on the bright side, this does make things more interesting, because apparently the Saki vote bloc is not that invincible. Looks like they won't run away with the crown after all, but they would have to earn it. Also, I'm going to wait for more matches to determine who is behind the tactical votes, because as aforementioned, i'm quite sure there were a few handed in along the way.

Moving on, it's important to note that no character has won Saimoe on their rookie year since Nanoha won in 2005 on her first try. A record that Saki (and K-On!) characters are in a good position of breaking. The best chances of stopping the record? Hayate and Clannad.

Anime Saimoe Tournament 2009 Main Draw, Day 30

It's quite a despair that Alicia and Amu are up against each other. No doubt Amu is stronger and incidentally she's in my top 10 moe this year, but Alicia is one of those characters that i regard highly. I'm sure Amu will prevail, though, and I'm liking her chances of making the Sweet 16...

...just like Louise's chances, since whoever wins the Mion-Imouto-Tsuruya-san match still can't be strong enough to beat Zero. But who knows? In any event, as others have mentioned, the Haruhi-chan split maybe a preview of the incoming split in Blocks E and F. we'll see.

The pattern is not so much that first-years can't win, but rather that every winner since Nanoha won on their second year. Who can continue that pettern? Clannad, Minami-ke(unlikely), Haruhi(technically their second year, if you want to be very technical, this is Haruhi-chan's first year, and next year will be SHnY's second), and everybody else are even more unlikely.

So we're either going to see a break in that pattern, have Clannad win, or have a total upset like 07.

well, one can look at it that way, but if so, then it's likely that the pattern will be broken. and i don't think it will be an upset if a rookie wins this year, actually. Clannad or another second year series (sans Hayate, I guess) winning the whole thing WILL be the upset.
