Indeed, this is a must. I've only seen the two films until now...just started watching the Stand Alone Complex series and I love them so damn much.

You can also try Gunsmith Cats, if you don't mind older stuff. Nothing legendary like GitS, but still enjoyable.

Seconding Gunsmith Cats.

Also Slayers is a must-see because Lina Inverse kicks major ass. XD She eventually develops a crush on her sidekick(?) but it's kinda subtle and it doesn't really make her blush THAT often.

Also Shakugan No Shana

Shamanic Princess is another good one. The heroine doesn't even have a boyfriend anymore-all romantic scenes are in flashbacks.

You also might like Magic Knights Rayearth

I know Black Lagoon is a must as well.

How about Black Cat? Eve is awesome, she's running around as Golden Darkness in To Love Ru nowadays, but she was awesoem back then as Eve.

Definately another vote for Black Lagoon.
Not only is it a hell of a lot of fun, Revy and the female cast almost consistantly out-badass the male characters.

Action/Adventure type shows:

Crest of the Stars

Read or Die (start with the OVAs, if you like it you can try out the TV series)

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (in chronological order), Nagato is awesome. Later on the whole season mellows out and becomes less action more slice of life, but watch at least the first 6 episodes for the action.

Chrono Crusade

Katangatari
- the 4th episode, oh my, you won't want to miss the 4th episode...

Chrome Shelled Regios

Otome Youkai Zakuro

Occult Academy

Hmmm...

I guess Tenchi Muyo and Tenchi Universe would count.

Change 123 is a manga.

Mirai Nikki
is a manga

Baka to Test maybe? Its' more a farce of an action adventure, but it might count.

Hayate the Combat Butler is similarly more comedy based, but it does have some action.

Ranma 1/2 is a farce of fighting anime. Perhaps The farce of action anime.

If you include non-action shows I have to mention Cross Game. There's no fighting or anything, just living a normal life, but Aoba certainly does something. A very strong female character.

No... just no... really no offence but Suzumiya was almost the worst show I ever saw and with the worst characters ever as well

None of them interested me... except maybe Asakura.

However, don't have much complaints towards movie... it actually was decent. If Suzumiya was based on mystery and drama instead of comedy, then it would be quiet good.

But thanks for all other recommendations, big list to choose from

I'm going to make a wild assumption and assume that you haven't seen truly horrible anime....

That's why I said almost

And I had seen Chrono Cursade
Not bad series, with some nice action moments. Rosette was a nice character and series had tear jerking ending. However, the last fight happened to be anti climatic for me...
But still nice series

Legend of the Legendary Heroes;
Female Lead: Ferris, an extremely powerful swordswomen with an obsession for dango and an odd (good?) sense of humor. Beautiful and knows it too. Kills without hesitation.

I want to suggest Witchblade, but I'm a little hesitant, haha. I have no clue what other people think about it. All I know is I definitely enjoyed it (I watched the English dub, I think the original Japanese might be censored, which seems backwards), but it's filled to the brim with scantily-clad, outrageously curvaceous females. HOWEVER, if you look past the sheer sex appeal, Masane Amaha is a very strong female lead who I really thought was characterized nicely. And she's pretty badass, too.

Thanks.

Why not watch Avenger? Layla makes a dynamite "kick ass" character. She is strong, but not obnoxious... which to me is much more preferable.

Sakura from Tokko is another bad-ass.
