Why is Hina so popular? she has barely any screen time, I don't think she's that interesting really and she looks pretty much like a pink haired Nagi.
I voted for Maria because she's the best (and cutest) character in the show, hopefully there will be some relationship development with Hayate in the future.

It's a tough call for me, I like most of the characters in the series save for Yukiji. Well, she does have her place in the anime but she gets on my nerves sometimes.
*ahem* Anyway, my vote goes to Sakuya. She cracks me up just about every time she smacks someone with her paper fan and every episode with her around is just made more enjoyable. |

Hina has lots of screen time, actually. There's been, what, around three or four episodes that were based entirely around her existence? Also, I'm a huge Hina x Hayate guy. I'm sure most of us are now. She's a skilled, attractive, and beautiful (emotionally) woman. She just seems to have this wonderful appeal no matter where she's going or what she's doing.

Hayate isn't an idiot or bumbling! give him a break after what he has been through the only thing weird about him is his freakish strength. Maria has to be the cutest character and most caring, also a maid and butler relationship has the most appeal to me.

Hina + Narrator guy
haven´t seen a show where the characters would constantly argue with the narrator^^, and he even got accused of murder LOL \o/ Hina is just pure awesomeness btw i wouldn´t watch this sure if it wasn´t for Hina ;/, Hayate seems a bit dull at moments, rather go with Harima from SR |

in a poll conducted in Akiba (not so recent, though), Nagi was at the top with a slight margin.

In the manga, up to the very day, Hina (and to a much lesser degree, Hamster due to her Hina connection) is the _only_ character that receives a continuous and non-resetting development. Basically, the cycle stays the same: Nagi has the highest exposure, but more or less remains the same wealthy kid everyone is circling around. Maria as gentle family mother surrogate is also featured prominently, but she never really changes. Then we have some more comedy-of-the-week hijinks with the secondary line characters (Isumi, Sakuya, Wataru). Then we get introduced to 1-2 new characters without relevance which are quickly forgotten. And finally we're back to Hina/(Hamster) for usually ~3 chapters where things _develop_. Meaning what happened in the past actually matters and some new building blocks are being added. This is the part of Hayate no Gotoku which has the strongest impact by far. In my opinion, this IS the main storyline, and the fact that the mangaka spends alot of chapters on it shows that he is very much aware that THIS is the show's best part. And this best part has been REMOVED from the anime. Even worse, in Hayate 52 something happens which effectively precludes the proper start of the main arc. Instead we're getting bribed off with a cutified and dumbed-down version of the much more complex and complicated Hina from the manga, see episode 48. Not that I didn't like the episode, but I feel that the anime tries too hard to stick to the development-less "comedy of the week" format. Right now I'm feeling extremely disappointed and even a bit angry. And that even under these highly hostile circumstances Hina is still doing so good actually shows where the show's strengths really lie. |
