Hey I was watching the anime fight between Ichigo and Byakuya again, and I caught something that I didn't before. Byakuya could've just bombarded Ichigo with all of the senbonzakura in that black dome, right? But he didn't because of some promise he made earlier. So did Ichigo really beat Byakuya? I mean, that seems like a big handicap... you know, NOT using your bankai.

Yup you are right Bya could have pawned Ichigo .... But Byakuya grossly under estimates Ichigo from word go .... If you do notice Bya's rhetorics he starts of with kozo ( brat ) the slowly starts calling him Kurosaki Ichigo somewhat like Charlie and Charles during Vietnam.

And secondly have you noticed how Bya doesnt use kido until the very end with Byakugan . Bya's strengths is kido even his zanpakuto is kido type . Well Bya wants to crush Ichi mentally and physically . So he takes the fight and relies on Zanjustu ( Katana ) which is Ichi's speciality / strengths .

Bya did not need to make all the zanaopkuto attack Ichi at once and at that point Banakai Reatsu was taking nagative effect on Ichi . Actually if the slight cameo by Hichigo had not happened Ichi would dead after Byakugan ( white Lightning )

if Byakuya wanted to, he'd kill ichigo, even after the fight when they were talking

byakuya can still walk, stand and shumpo. i think he can use kido to finnish off lol

Breaking of the Zanpakuto signifies defeat . Byakuya suffered less injuries than Ichi and well even KenVsIchi Ken was last man standing witha broken zanapkuto though .... Zangestu is really awesome .

I am glad the way the fights turned out though. Of course this just makes me into a bigger fan of Byakuya, but hey, Ichigo is pretty good hehe. How strong do you guys think that a shinigami's kidou can be? I mean, Tousen could obliterate Grimmjaw's arm... So you think Byakuya could do even more damage?

Byakuya could of easily killed Ichigo, with his white lightning kidou. Instead he aimed at the shoulder instead of the head or heart.

Even when Byakuya was going easy on Ichigo, he basically was just toying with him and winning, until Ichigo became Hichigo. I mean, shonens will always give the main character some trump card plot device, right? Not to mention Byakuya decides to end the fight on one big "charge up everything you got" attack, which until this point seems to favour Ichigo no matter who he fights(e.g. Renji fight, Kenpachi fight).

In Ichigo's defense, he could've killed Byakuya straight off when he caught him off guard with his speed. Instead, he held the blade at Bya's throat just to show him how fast he was. After that, Bya took the fight more seriously and didn't allow anymore openings. The fight was more like a duel than a no-holds-barred battle so there were certain unwritten rules that both Bya and Ichigo were following. I guess you could say each one wanted an honorable victory.

I still haven't come to terms with how someone who only had bankai for a few hours (after training to obtain it for 3 days) beat someone who was notorious for his skill/strength, someone who had trained for hundreds of years.

Very DBZ-ish if you ask me, but thats just Shounens for you I guess. I'm just sad because Byakuya deserved better.

Several things:

- Ichigo has unnaturally large reiatsu
- Zangetsu is an unusually powerful zanpakuto (permanent release state)
- Ichigo's bankai ability (super-speed) just happens to be a perfect
counter to Byakuya's bankai ability
- Ichigo has a hollow side

In other words, plot devices.

Still for me, it's a little more acceptable than DBZ where the main character trains in high gravity for like a week and is then suddenly the strongest being in the universe

Byakugan = Hyuga family bloodline from Naruto

The weird part in me kinda wants to see Byakuya use it though..

Not necessarily, the method Yoroichi came up with was sort of a last minute thing. As Byakuya said himself, it takes years to truly master Bankai. Ichigo just so happens to have a very simple bankai which is probably easier to master than others, and plus he has the help of a hollow.
