Okay I mean no, it's true, but only because it seemed like an easier ending than having to actually go into detail and develop Lutecia's issues, you know? It's not like I thought it would be a cruel ending and would get fun out of seeing the readers rage at me for killing Lutecia and dooming Vivio to a cold, lonely existence!

Thank you for not taking the easy way out... that ending is sorta like someone holding your hands behind your back while another guy punches you in the gut over and over. Only instead of the gut, he's punching your soul.

I'm pretty sure I needed to write this. It's very rough.

I didn't quite know what to do with myself.

I mean, it's an honor to be part of this whole thing,but it's not exactly a “thing” that I want happening at all, even if I can help. As I sit here, listening to my adoptive father give the Eulogy, or what passes for one anyway, I try not to think about how everyone's probably staring up here. I mean, it would be for a different reason than I'm normally stared at; I'm just a regular old sixteen-year-old on Earth. Just Vivio Takamachi. Granddaughter of the late Shiro Takamachi.

Yuuno-papa was on form, which was only surprising if you'd never been to the Infinity Library to hear him talk on any topic under the sun. I thought it was a brilliant idea to have him speak for the family rather than one of Shiro's children, biological or otherwise. Nanoha-mama is seated in the row in front of me with Aunt Miyuki and Uncle Kyouya as well as Grandma Momoko. I was amazed that they were keeping it together, as Yuuno-papa was now talking about actually having a singular father figure in his life, and it was making me smile with watery eyes; I couldn't imagine what it was doing to them.

Uncharacteristically, Yuuno-papa had to stop and collect himself before he was able to get through the last line of the prepared speech, which Nanoha-mama had written quite well for him... but the last line was not one that was in the speech. Yuuno-papa had added it.

“In all of this, I can say that while there are advantages to any life you may live, finally having someone I could call 'Dad' is something that I will miss forever, and never again assign. He was, in every way, a father to me.”

As Papa stepped down, I had to swallow down another lump in my throat. While I hadn't cried yet, I also hadn't really been... okay. Ever since I knew.

But it wasn't that simple. I stole a glance at Nanoha-mama, who had one of her more stoic expressions on. I couldn't really think of if I'd lost her or Papa. I... didn't want to think of what that would do to me. I was kind of proud of how well they looked like they were taking it, particularly Grandma Momoko. For a moment, I hoped when I was put in a situation like they were in, I would handle it half as well. I know that as much as I argue with Mama and Papa lately, that I would be a gibbering wreck if I lost either of them. My feelings about my late grandfather were probably nothing compared to his daughters and son and wife and...

That wasn't a good line of thought to go on.

But I couldn't help it. I had to compare my own reaction to everyone else's and the reactions that they had to where they “should” be. Even if I couldn't define what a reaction of any given person at the funeral should be having. Even if I hadn't a clue what my reaction should have been either.

Was that why? I looked down at my hands. Was I making these comparisons because I had no idea what I was supposed to be feeling? That makes sense. I didn't know what to feel, after all. Papa woke me by poking me in the side, then gesturing. Looking up, I realized that it was time for me to perform once again. It was an honor, and I felt a flush of pride once again. I got up and moved to the center and then up to the casket to escort it back down. Kyouya, Miyuki, Nanoha-mama, Yuuno-papa and a cousin that I can never remember the name of joined me. We escorted the casket back to where it would be laid to rest, where some men who clearly did this for a living took over to make sure it was centered over the grave.

Grandma Momoko was now in front, with her son and daughters around her in a ring... almost exactly as if the three of them were her bodyguards. I had a small chuckle to myself about how they could be, each completely able to protect her life. Maybe that's because she was the only parent that they had left, and it was something that they would protect with all of their might, were it to become necessary. I found myself making sure I flanked them, ready to do what they needed me to do... even when I knew that the protection that all of them needed was not a physical one... one that I could not give them.

Flowers were handed out... and we each, starting with Grandma, had the opportunity to have our 'last' goodbye. But was it? After all, it wasn't like Aunt Miyuki and Uncle Kyouya would run out of stories about him. It wasn't like Grandma Momoko would just stop talking about him when I want boy advice (Nanoha-mama was useless for such advice, so I'd found Aunt Miyuki and Grandma Momoko were the best choices). It wasn't like Nanoha-mama wouldn't talk about her father when we were having a moment of closeness between parent and child. It wasn't like Yuuno-papa wouldn't look to 'what Shiro would have done' when I get into a tight spot (particularly of my own fault).

He wouldn't really be completely gone. He and what he had wrought in all of us would always be there. I'd always think of him as Grandpa Shiro. I'd always remember when he picked me up and 'flew' me across the Midori-ya. I'd always remember that I loved Grandpa Shiro as much as anyone ever loves their grandfather.

And I still do.

I drop my flower onto the casket and turn to run into the welcoming arms of Nanoha-mama. And when she kisses the top of my head, I know that nothing really has changed. We'd have to make sure Grandma Momoko was alright from time to time, but Aunt Miyuki and Uncle Kyouya were in better situations for keeping her okay. Maybe... maybe I'll just find an excuse to visit Earth more often.

And I think Grandpa Shiro would like that.

Honestly, I wish I knew my grandparents a bit better. I barely remember them since I only met them a handful of times in Hong Kong when I was 3 years old before moving to Canada permanently.

This was very well done. Everyone handles death differently so there's no 'proper' way to act at a funeral. I've been to far too many than I care to count, and they all vary. Some are a sombre deal, some are more like a celebration.

I really empathized with Vivio here, as like I said before I've been to many funerals and I didn't always know how I was supposed to feel or act (usually because I had no idea who the dead person was). In the end you really do need to look to the future and move forward while keeping the departed's memory in your heart.

It was a great piece.

... Though I do have to admit it did make me happy to see 'Yuuno-papa'

But I couldn't help it. I had to compare my own reaction to everyone else's and the reactions that they had to where they “should” be. Even if I couldn't define what a reaction of any given person at the funeral should be having. Even if I hadn't a clue what my reaction should have been either.

Was that why? I looked down at my hands. Was I making these comparisons because I had no idea what I was supposed to be feeling? That makes sense. I didn't know what to feel, after all. Papa woke me by poking me in the side, then gesturing. Looking up, I realized that it was time for me to perform once again. It was an honor, and I felt a flush of pride once again. I got up and moved to the center and then up to the casket to escort it back down. Kyouya, Miyuki, Nanoha-mama, Yuuno-papa and a cousin that I can never remember the name of joined me. We escorted the casket back to where it would be laid to rest, where some men who clearly did this for a living took over to make sure it was centered over the grave.

Grandma Momoko was now in front, with her son and daughters around her in a ring... almost exactly as if the three of them were her bodyguards. I had a small chuckle to myself about how they could be, each completely able to protect her life. Maybe that's because she was the only parent that they had left, and it was something that they would protect with all of their might, were it to become necessary. I found myself making sure I flanked them, ready to do what they needed me to do... even when I knew that the protection that all of them needed was not a physical one... one that I could not give them.

Flowers were handed out... and we each, starting with Grandma, had the opportunity to have our 'last' goodbye. But was it? After all, it wasn't like Aunt Miyuki and Uncle Kyouya would run out of stories about him. It wasn't like Grandma Momoko would just stop talking about him when I want boy advice (Nanoha-mama was useless for such advice, so I'd found Aunt Miyuki and Grandma Momoko were the best choices). It wasn't like Nanoha-mama wouldn't talk about her father when we were having a moment of closeness between parent and child. It wasn't like Yuuno-papa wouldn't look to 'what Shiro would have done' when I get into a tight spot (particularly of my own fault).

He wouldn't really be completely gone. He and what he had wrought in all of us would always be there. I'd always think of him as Grandpa Shiro. I'd always remember when he picked me up and 'flew' me across the Midori-ya. I'd always remember that I loved Grandpa Shiro as much as anyone ever loves their grandfather.

And I still do.

I drop my flower onto the casket and turn to run into the welcoming arms of Nanoha-mama. And when she kisses the top of my head, I know that nothing really has changed. We'd have to make sure Grandma Momoko was alright from time to time, but Aunt Miyuki and Uncle Kyouya were in better situations for keeping her okay. Maybe... maybe I'll just find an excuse to visit Earth more often.

And I think Grandpa Shiro would like that.

A good piece. Sad, obviously, but good. It relaly gets across the sense of loss very well, but it's also reassuring to see the family coming together to cope. Nanoha-mama is seated in the row in front of me with Aunt Miyuki and Uncle Kyouya as well as Grandma Momoko. I was amazed that they were keeping it together, as Yuuno-papa was now talking about actually having a singular father figure in his life, and it was making me smile with watery eyes; I couldn't imagine what it was doing to them.

Uncharacteristically, Yuuno-papa had to stop and collect himself before he was able to get through the last line of the prepared speech, which Nanoha-mama had written quite well for him... but the last line was not one that was in the speech. Yuuno-papa had added it.

“In all of this, I can say that while there are advantages to any life you may live, finally having someone I could call 'Dad' is something that I will miss forever, and never again assign. He was, in every way, a father to me.”

As Papa stepped down, I had to swallow down another lump in my throat. While I hadn't cried yet, I also hadn't really been... okay. Ever since I knew.

But it wasn't that simple. I stole a glance at Nanoha-mama, who had one of her more stoic expressions on. I couldn't really think of if I'd lost her or Papa. I... didn't want to think of what that would do to me. I was kind of proud of how well they looked like they were taking it, particularly Grandma Momoko. To be honest, a grandson position at a funeral is something I can't really relate to; I was never really that close to my grandparents and never really got the chance to even meet my grandfathers...

But losing a father... I know how that goes all too well, so this fic really hit close to home. Like I said in the rep, I really hope writing this fic helped you.

Yuuno groaned once as he slowly opened his eyes. How long had it been since he took those readings and fainted? And what was wrong with his eyesight? He was certain that he had his glasses on before but now, his eyes were a bit unfocused, only able to make out something curvy in front of him in the dark room. He shifted a little as he moved one of his hands to his face, not feeling the familiar frames hanging on by his ears. “Yuuno-san?”

“Glasses… where are my glasses?” He was about to fumble around when he was gently pushed back down by a soft hand.

“Please wait a moment.” His vision could barely make out his female companion moving to grab his glasses that had been placed on the night shelf. “Here. Would you like the lights to be on?”

“Thanks. And yes, please.” After taking a moment to put them on, a flood of light lit up the room allowing him to recognize the surroundings. He was in one of the crew quarters, which was quite messy with all the clothing that had been scattered on the floor.

Wait a second…… scattered clothing? So that’s why he felt a bit exposed in here and why Seikou was…

…… oh.

“Are you alright?” Her tone was quiet and warm. At least warm for her standards since for any other person that didn’t know her, she probably would have sounded the same as ever.

Yuuno thought he would have been a lot more nervous in the aftermath but he must have gotten used to it somehow thanks to his prior experiences with Rai and Yami. “I’m fine. Don’t worry about me. I won’t pull another freak out again if that’s what you’re wondering.” He pondered about getting back to solving his current problem but after some thought, decided to put it aside for now as it was damn comfortable in here. Not to mention the lovely company.

For Material-S, it had been an enjoyable experience, and something told her it had been so only because her partner had been this man. It made her oddly happy to think that, and it also relieved her that she had made him feel good. While she had also been rejuvenated, that was merely a side benefit, not the main intent.

And yet something troubled her. Yuuno had gotten quite… intense with her. While it did feel amazing, it still struck her as odd that a kind hearted man such as him would forgo being gentle. Moreover, he had been so resistant to the idea of sleeping with her the first time it was proposed, but he had given in rather easily this time. Had that merely been the result of all the stress or was there something else?

On top of that, the look that was in his eyes continued to bother her. It was as if he was looking at her, yet seeing something else. That name he called during the heat of passion, was it her name, or…?

She would have to ponder it later. Right now, there was something else she wanted to ask. “Yuuno-san?”

“Hm?”

“Earlier, I said that if you could not return to your world, you can start a new life with us. I would like to hear your thoughts on that idea.”

The blonde male leaned back against his pillow and stared at the ceiling. “A new life, huh?”

“Yes. You can still explore those burial sites and continue your work to your heart’s content without being constrained by whatever rules governed your occupation on your world,” said the Nanoha replica.

“Well, isn’t it kinda early to be giving up? Besides, I thought you were interested in seeing my world.”

“I am interested but I like the way things are now. Being with you and the others as we travel among the stars freely…” She lazily traced circles with her right index finger on his chest. “I’m certain the others feel the same way. Rai has taken a liking to you quite quickly. As for Yami, if she has appointed you to a high ranking position of her inner court, then she probably thinks highly of you.”

A part of Yuuno felt proud on hearing that all three females seemed to value his company. And he admitted that there was a certain sense of liberation in this situation. But he couldn’t just abandon everything back on Mid-Childa. If he said that straight up right now, he doubted Seikou would be happy on hearing that and right now, he would rather stay in everyone’s good graces considering how volatile they were.

What he needed to do is buy a bit of time for himself. “I admit that I don’t mind the idea but the least I should do before starting a brand new journey is to tie up all the loose threads back on my world. Give a proper notice of resignation and all that.”

“Fair enough.” Seikou was glad that he was giving the idea careful consideration. For her, being able to know that he would not object to building a new life was enough for now.

“I still have to figure out the problem with all these sudden changes when we travel in dimensional space. What keeps throwing us off?” He got up from his spot and swung over his side of the bed, trying to get his mind back on track.


“It’s a matter of examining each instance. Deconstruct the problem, Yuuno-san and you will be able to find your clue,” said Material-S quietly as she moved behind him and massaged his bare shoulders.

Damn… his mind was starting to go a bit cloudy from her touch. “S-Seikou…”

“You can solve this. I believe in you.”

He chuckled a bit. “Heh… it’s not like I can just activate a limiter and have my analytical capability spring up to S…… rank…”

The sudden pause in his words caused her to get a bit concerned. “Yuuno-san?”

“I can’t believe this… why didn’t I think of this before?” The Librarian turned around with excitement in his green eyes. “Limiters! Mage ranks! It’s all making sense now!”

“I’m sorry but I do not follow.”

“The Bureau imposes power limiters upon its most potent mages when the latter have to work together within a comparatively small area, because magic of great magnitude endangers the fabric of the time-space! Each time we tried to make a jump, it went off course because of the warping of the space time fabric! It was caused by the three of you since you don’t have any limiters! The first instance was only a minor detour and that was after Yami got with me… and then we had that warp bubble occur…” With the new information fresh in his mind, he got out of the bed and started getting dressed quickly. “I know how to get us back! A proper compensation variable in the flight plan and we should be able to make it there!”

“Can it be that-” Material-S was quickly cut off with a kiss from Yuuno.

“I couldn’t have figured this out without you! Thank you!”

As he made a hasty retreat to get his equipment for the upcoming number crunching ahead, the Nanoha replica merely smiled to herself, glad that his spirits were back up again. “You’re welcome, Yuuno-san.”

Sorry for taking so long to update. Real life really cuts down on writing time.

Kinda interesting how you redid this scene I originally wrote. Only about three paragraphs of what I did remained in tact (bold for those interested)

Well it was still good and definitely needed the reworking to flow into Yuuno's enlightenment moment. Now that he's knows what the problem is, maybe we'll be back on Mid for the big showdown before we know it.
