Great thread, I love this kind of songs. In I fact I love them so much, it's going to be very tough to pick just ten.

Not in any particular order except that Kajiura Yuki in general rules them all when it comes to composing battle themes:

Nowhere (Madlax) - when I heard this song and watched the fight in episode 1, I just knew I was going to love this series.

Canta per Me and Salva Nos (Noir) - sad, beautiful, yet somehow uplifiting...

Mezame (Mai-HiME)

El Cazador (El Cazador) - more and more Kajiura brilliance.

Knights of the Round Table (Ayakashi Ayashi) - absolutely inspiring and magical piece, especially when combined with Saizou's dancing.

Tatakau Sora no Hate (Simoun) - the whole Simoun OST is out of this world and there are arguably better pieces that sound during battles (like Kanashimi no Simoun Shivuyura) but this one has the most "combat" feeling.

Tsunagari no Houkai (Red Garden) - this piece is a big reason for me rewatching a certain battle in episode 16 of this series like 24 times.
Souma no Tatakai (Kannazuki no Miko)

Tema I (Gunslinger Girl) - yet another jaw-dropping battle scene in episode one.
P.S. There are great battle pieces in Gundam SEED but I don't really know the names of the particular songs apart from Honoo no Tobira and there are quite enough Kajiura songs in my top 10 as it is.

For the SEED franchise Kajiura only did a few OP/EDs as well as the insert songs, she had nothing to do with the BGM for Gundam SEED, it was done by Sahashi Toshihiko who also composed the scores for Simoun and Gunslinger Girl. Here's his ANN page, imo he's one of the most underrated composers going around.

Personally my fav Simoun battle theme is Tokubetsu na Mirai to Tameni from the first OST, just epic. I'll do a top ten list later and that will be in it for sure

I know that, I just don't know the names of the pieces that struck me as great in Gundam SEED bar some of the insert songs, that's why I mentioned Honoo no Tobira.

I guess probably should have mentioned that I consider Toshihiko Sahashi to be the only composer who comes close Kajiura as far as battle themes go.

An awesome OST which highlights tense moments of awesomeness like Impel Down, Ace vs Blackbeard

Gomu gomu no bazooka: Classic

To Aru Majutsu: Gensou Koroshi is probably Touma's ultimate battle theme. Definitely feels like a mix of science and magic . Best example is him punching out Accelerator.

To me, the best & most memorable anime battle themes are from Rurouni Kenshin, SDF Macross and Naruto (before Shippuden). The scores for the battle scenes (and any other scenes for that matter) are beyond amazing.

Can't come up with a top 10 since I am not too good at remembering single BGM tracks. So in no particular order...

Before I got into anime I always found the Shining Finger theme from G Gundam to be all kinds of lol and awesome. I still use it as my general "I'm gonna pwn you with awesomeness" theme song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ny24zPeQLks

Tatakai no Hate - Yu Yu Hakusho; although this is more of a theme that happens during interludes in battles. Still it signifies something cool is gonna happen.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOGhFHgwo3U

Puella Magi Madoka Magica - Pugna cum Maga
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8b7RY6nxUc

One of my favorite songs from the series; though not a direct battle theme. It does happen during battles, so does that count?

Mai-Hime: Mezame
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5Y9-V6oyAw
"And now we must fight!!!!!!"

Gundam Unicorn: Unicorn (?)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTUG5CxVQcA

I don't care what it it's titled. It has all the soundtrack of an epic blockbuster movie

Rebuild of Evangelion: Angel of Doom
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7Jf0LFRxqY

It just fits the scene it comes in very well.

Akagi- Shingi. Mostly used near the end of games; incoming pwnage
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFhduUypBWM

Also as honorable mention, that combat song that comes up in Haruhi even though it was so hilariously out of place like a matrix ripoff ....

Mami's theme in Madoka Magica is the first battle theme to really catch my attention since Noein's Shangri-La that wao and Blaat mentioned when this thread first appeared.

^M23 (or Spiral) from KnK5 wasn't feature in a battle, but rather before it.

One could say it was a battle of sorts between Shiki's will and Araya's taichi prison.

^That was merely Shiki dreaming. If you want so much to put the song though, then so be it.

It is a "battle song" if you consider the whole song. But that last part that is what most people care about, only if you try too hard.

Spoiler for Tidiness:
Woah... talk about nostalgia... That, and the Gungrave ones above. I can feel the tears coming out already.

I don't really have a top ten, since I have watched too much memorable anime to really justify cherry picking what I think is the best, so... just some random ones I can think of off-hand.

Spoiler for (Utawarerumono) Touka's Entrance:

Spoiler for (G Gundam) Burning Gundam Theme:

Spoiler for (G Gundam) Final Showdown Between Domon & Master Asia:

Spoiler for (GaoGaiGar) HAMMER CONNECT! GOLDION HAMMER!!!! HAMMER HELL! HAMMER HEAVEN! HIKARI NI NAREEEE!!!!:

Cheers.
