Tamako is a great character, surrounded by a delightful human cast, BUT the bird seems more annoying to me right now than anything else. Some of the comedy is working, but like other people, I'm just seeing too much of the bird right now for my taste. I'm hoping that his role drops significantly in the future, which I assume should happen, considering the size of the cast.
I get the feeling they wanted some fantasy elements to mix things up, but I wonder if it'll be really worth it in the end. Only time will tell... |

The first episode make me want to play Hatoful Boyfriend again.
I don't like the bird because it looks and acts like typical pixar film character + kayneth's arrogant voice. It should have voiced by Daisuke Ono. Unlike chuuni, this anime started off really badly for me and I'm ready to drop it. |

I think it was posted already in this thread that the staff delibirately scaled down the fantasy elements in this series. The bird is the only thing left.
I haven't watched the first episode yet. Personally, I would've gotten rid of all of the fantasy elements. Now the bird kind of just is there.

The problem with this bird is that it is an "out of context" character, who is bizzare for the sake of being bizzare. A wacky Dreamworks/Pixar comic relief shoved into a relaxing, laid back and normal slice of life world.
Most anime mascots are quirky and wacky in a way that makes sense to the logic of the universe. The bird, however, is like that sloth from "Ice Age" and that stupid Zebra from "Madagascar"; cracking jokes whether or not it is appropriate or necessary to the narrative movement, and yes cracking jokes even if it stops the narrative to a grinding halt JUST to focus on his wackiness. Heck' even Mr Sakamoto from "Nichijou" made more sense than this feathered fiend! I'm staying for the lovable human cast; the bird? I'm giving it the bird right now.

In any case, there were many nice touches in the first episode. First of all, I like the bird's voice! It's a he, so that's a relief (I feared he would have some awfully cute voice). I hope Tamako visits the somewhat hippy record seller again. Anyone know what record he's holding here? Also, I loved the interplay between Tamako and Anko. Tamako seems more... "carefree" while Anko seems more "serious" in a way. I hope there will be more comedy between the two.

The first episode was fine but completely different from my expectations.
Contrary to popular opinion, I hope that KyoAni significantly decreases Dera's screen time. Instead I want to see more of Tamako's classmates, who were sadly shafted in this first episode. Reading some summaries before the anime aired, I thought that the bird was going to play a mascot/narrator role, not that he was going to be a main character! I agree with those who said that the presence of a single fantasy element is kinda jarring. It would be more tolerable if it was just a side element. I like the idea of a Romeo and Juliet-like romance between Tamako and Mochizou. It will be even more interesting if there is a love triangle involving Midori. The last time I saw a FFM love triangle taken seriously was in the horrible Kannazuki no Miko. I like the sense of camaraderie among the residents of the shopping district. It reminds me of good shows like Abenobashi and SoreMachi.
