CNet: Graphene aerogel is the new world's lightest substance

As research into aerogel continues, scientists are discovering ever-lighter variations. First, there was carbon nanotube aerogel, with a density of 4 milligrams per cubic centimetre. Then along came silica aerogel, which weighed in at 1 milligram per cubic centimetre and garnered 15 entries in Guinness World Records. It was ousted by metallic microlattices, at 0.9 milligrams, and then aerographite, at 0.18 milligrams.

Now, a new graphene aerogel created by scientists led by professor Gao Chao at the Zhejiang University has swept past, weighing in at just 0.16 milligrams per cubic centimetre.

For reference, the density of air is 1.2 milligrams per cubic centimetre — so the new material is 7.5 times lighter than air. It's twice as heavy as hydrogen — the lightest element there is — but beats out helium, which has a density of 0.1786 milligrams per cubic centimetre.

Gao Chao's team had already been building macroscopic graphene materials in one and two dimensions; to create the new aerogel, the researchers branched out into the third dimension, using a new method of freeze drying the solutions of carbon nanotubes and graphene to create malleable carbon sponges.

PhD candidate Sun Haiyan explained, "It's somewhat like large space structures such as big stadiums, with steel bars as supports and high strength film as walls to achieve both lightness and strength. Here, carbon nanotubes are supports and graphene is the wall."

The new material is amazingly absorptive, able to suck in up to 900 times its own weight in oil at a rate of 68.8 grams per second — only oil, not water, which means it has massive potential as a cleaning material when it comes to events such as oil spills.

Then, both the graphene aerogel and the oil could be recycled.

The full results of the project can be found published in Nature, titled "Solid carbon, springy and light".

So... does it float up in air?
I'm always reminded of Diamond Age with these new materials. It's amazingly close to the stuff in the book (diamond structures which are mostly vacuum and therefore lighter than air).
I guess the nano stuctures here are not vacuum tight and contain air within them, so they don't float. But that is something we can improve upon.

It won't work. HEAT rounds attack on an almost molecular level by drilling through armor with a jet of hot metal. With just spaced layers of aerogel, it wouldn't work because of the pure-element structure of carbon. Sure it insulates by dispersing heat actively, but it doesn't disperse the intense pressure caused by the huge amount of force on a incredibly small area.

Unless you are planning to electrify the graphene plate and use it as piezoelectric armor, then the heat dispersion is useful for helping to disperse the heat energy caused by the transfer of kinetic energy at the point of impact throughout the tank.

Pretty normal. A loli took 3 days and a man took 3 hours.

Though in this case he didn't get suspended animation like the other 2.

Researchers successfully map fountain of youth:

"In collaboration with an international research team, University of Copenhagen
researchers have for the first time mapped telomerase, an enzyme which has a
kind of rejuvenating effect on normal cell ageing. The findings have just been
published in Nature Genetics and are a step forward in the fight against cancer."

Nuclear Power Prevents More Deaths Than It Causes

Quote:
Using nuclear power in place of fossil-fuel energy sources, such as coal, has prevented some 1.8 million air pollution-related deaths globally and could save millions of more lives in coming decades, concludes a study. The researchers also find that nuclear energy prevents emissions of huge quantities of greenhouse gases. These estimates help make the case that policymakers should continue to rely on and expand nuclear power in place of fossil fuels to mitigate climate change, the authors say (Environ. Sci. Technol., DOI: 10.1021/es3051197).
In the wake of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, critics of nuclear power have questioned how heavily the world should rely on the energy source, due to possible risks it poses to the environment and human health.

Look through xkcd. There a simple illustration showing that.

They also have notions created every time there is a major reactor disaster. Then tend to be seen as much more dangerous and longer lasting problems than other types of power generation plants.

The thing is that problems like that are uncommon for nuclear reactors verse other power plants.

Same notions that make people think airplanes are more dangerous than cars because every time their is a plane crash it is on the mass media or that HIV causes more deaths than the flu.

Memory cubes promising a 15x speed boost take a step closer:

"High performance memory cubes took a step closer yesterday after the
specification for their architecture was finalised.

Prototype versions of the memory cube chips have been demonstrated swapping
data with the system some 10 times faster than the DDR3 memory in use today,
while consuming 70 per cent less energy per bit."

New Giant Tarantula Discovered in Sri Lanka

Quote:
A new type of tarantula about the size of your face has been found in northern Sri Lanka. Scientists found the spiders — with a leg span up to 8 inches across — living in trees and the old doctor’s quarters of a hospital in Mankulam.

Covered in beautiful, ornate markings, the spiders belong to the genus Poecilotheria, known as “Pokies” for short. These are the tiger spiders, an arboreal group indigenous to India and Sri Lanka that are known for being colorful, fast, and venomous. As a group, the spiders are related to a class of South American tarantula that includes the Goliath bird-eater, the world’s largest.
