One Piece Film RED

I approached this movie with mindset that I'm not gonna watch an anime movie, I'm watching Ado's concert
and it delivers.. It was good!

Finally got to see this in theaters. And oh boy, that was great. That was a really good movie right there. That might legitimately crack my top 10 anime experiences of the year when I end up going back to think on it. Loved the theater experience with this one.

I appreciate that the story knew it needed to focus heavily on Uta herself. She's the star of this thing. Spending as much time developing her, establishing her personality, and delving into her past makes sense. They basically have a handful of "episodes" to get that job done. And the result is that she's fantastic. The Straw Hats mostly are static in this movie and that's fine. They have hundreds of episodes to establish who they are around this time, so I'm good with that.

I don't I knew going in that Uta would suffer that fate. But I did have a feeling that it might happen with her being the main antagonist of this film. Definitely a bittersweet finale. I really did like her presence in the movie and would have loved to see her survive. Even if it was something like "she's in a coma due to using those mushrooms and thus won't appear in the main show until the story is over." But they just went for it. Had her go all out and sacrifice herself to undo the damage she caused. I did honestly feel bad about it. But that's the way it goes. It did try to end on a positive note having her music live forever and create positive impact on the world. Although I'd imagine the World Government wouldn't be cool with that, but Luffy is going to change the world anyways so it's probably fine.

I do appreciate that Luffy never did attack his childhood friend. He attacked things that were attacking him. He attacked the giant music monster. But with Uta he did legitimately want to save her. Even if he didn't like what she was doing, you could see him get upset finding out that she was basically killing herself with her plan.

Holy smokes the music really did deliver. Look, I'm a fan of Symphogear. You can fill a whole movie with music and I'm going to be good with that. Uta fighting people while singing some songs? Yeah, that's right up my alley.

I really had a good time here. 9/10

So, I need a clarification on something, because I'm hearing Internet rumor about about, saying Oda confirmed it, but I haven't seen anything of it myself beyond hearsay.

Spoiler for What is and isn't canon:

We know that Uta is canon in the same way Shiki is canon, or more accurately pseudo-canon: they definitely DO exist, have shown up for a handful of panels in the manga (mostly as silhouettes), but will likely have no more interaction beyond what we have now. Cool, I can get that.
What I'm hearing now is that Oda also confirmed Uta's backstory as Luffy's childhood friend ALSO being canon. Supposedly via SBS or other channel. This is the one where I have to go "Uh... that doesn't work so well". Because if Oda confirms it, it's a MASSIVE retcon. Mostly because, the vast majority of stuff that only seems to be mentioned now usually has a one-off line previously that would get expanded. But, for obvious reasons, there's not been any mention of Uta before this. And I'd say Uta would be a Very Important Person to Luffy- in other words, Oda is shoehorning a character into the story without any previous mentions, who should've been mentioned a long time ago. So, anyone else know if Oda confirmed Uta's backstory as actual canon?

I don't think her canon status really impacts things that much. There are people that Luffy cares about that he doesn't bring up everyday. Without cause he doesn't mention a precious nakama in Vivi. I think this is overrating it in terms of retcons. She could have been mentioned a long time ago. But she didn't have to be. It's just expanding the backstory without locking the characters in from where he had in mind with them at the very start of writing the series. How often was Judge mentioned by Sanji before the New World arcs got started? Maybe more than I remember, but I don't recall it being a major point. Despite that being the whole reason Sanji was on the ship that led him to Zeff in the first place.

It's just growing the universe. I'm sure Uta is probably canon both to that world and Luffy's history. If they didn't want to have Uta considered that way she wouldn't have had a mini-series of chapters/anime episodes. They want people to think the history shown happened and that's how I'll treat it.

I don't remember Oda saying that, but even if he did, I'll just remind you he did far worse with Sabo who was never even remotely hinted at until near the end of Marinford and was given the laziest plot device to explain why he never contacted Ace or Luffy.

I think that's part of my issue with it: how Sabo became a part of the story. Oda just BARELY handwaved him into the story. I can forgive that being done once.

But if this is true, Oda's now done it TWICE. This is my real issue with it: it's Harem Romcom-level bullshit, where a childhood friend is introduced to the plot after a few years of publication real-time (obviously for very different reasons).

And on top of that, we'd already seen quite a lot of Luffy's childhood, between the original Romance Dawn chapters and then hanging with Ace and Sabo. To say there was another character back then feels like "Oh yeah, so Luffy actually had another friend that I've never mentioned in over a thousand chapters of publication, and Luffy knew her before he ever met Ace or Sabo"... that's some terrible writing.

Of course, in the end it really doesn't matter.

Uta is dead... at least for now- she seems to be VERY popular in Japan, and as much as I do actually like her myself, I'd rather not see Oda cave into fan pressure to do even more hand-wavey bullshit to bring her back- again, we already had that with Sabo.

Really, for me it's just a consistency issue- Oda is (usually) VERY consistent, so when you have things like this, they stand out very glaringly.

Spoiler for Spoilers to the Movie One Piece Film RED:

Well, I just return after I watch the movie "One Piece Film RED" at the Sinema in my country (I still find it hard to believe that this movie came to my country) and I think the movie was made well done the new characters get a strong base and the watcher can easily understand what their goal, why they try to do what they to do and what their motivation that drive than to go so far with their action, the plot of the movie is also made well and although was parts that I think could be made better or be erased like the part with the demon of the world of the dream I think that in the end, the movie is successful to convey the message that it tries to.
Does someone know when the soundtrack of this Movie will be released on the internet?

I realized the BD came out weeks ago so I sat down and watch it and... it was alright. It was basically one giant advertisement for Ado's music and not much else. She is a really great singer though, so that saved the movie. And most people are going to sleep on her performance because of that but I thought Kaori Nazuka was fantastic in this.

As a movie named after Shanks, it completely failed to live up to the hype though, but I already expected that when it was announced. They actually did more than I thought by showing his crew fight a bit.
