Gamera... now HERE'S a name I haven't heard in a hot minute.

I've always found it interesting that back in the heyday of kaiju (let's face it, they're not exactly popular these days, probably at least in part due to the Butcher), Godzilla was famous in the West, but Gamera never really took off from Japan. It'll be interesting to see if this way of Gamera gets popular or not.

So-so CGI and loads of anti-American bigotry, but that's not unusual for kaiju flicks. At least there are plenty of kaiju right from the first episode.

I’m not sure how this was anti-American. The military always gets its butt kicked in Kaiju movies,

it just happened to be the US military that was on the front lines first. And they didn’t make them look like @$$holes either and showed them prioritizing evacuating civilians, instead of making them only care about killing the monsters.
While the JSDF tanks did do good for a short while, they got melted too. And it was US AC-130s that saved the day in the end, until Gamera got back on its feet.

Honestly I thought the Japanese government were the ones being portrayed as incompetent, as the JSDF couldn’t get into the fight until the last episode because of political tie-up BS.

I think it played out more with the kids, even though the ringleader got turned into a sort of mascot friend character.

The usual kaiju thing is the American military goes barrelling in with no regard for civilian casualties, and the Japanese government frets and dithers and does nothing. This was aligned with that pretty much spot-on.

As bad as the CGI is, the plot here turned out to be pretty decent I thought. I was entertained.
