That was planned initially, but I ditched it (along with Lancer Mode) because quite frankly, the difference between a Limit Break and Ethereal Mode is almost nil. So I figured, why bother to give her something she already has?

Hey, its one of the last few places where a modified descendent of these sarcophagus-turned-EVAsuit are still being produced legally in Ordered Space.

And yes, the Belka Knights are never seen in these. It was never meant for members of the Saint Guard, not even their elite. A Chapter of Adepta usually maintain a handful of them in heavy support (with living Adepta in more comfortable cockpits).

But there are always exceptions to the rule, like the chapter of Salamanders, along with a few "lucky" ones with relations to Orussia, being stationed right next to a Great Forge has allowed them to keep an entire platoon active without much cost.

History:
Iris Laternu was born to Risa Laternu in MC 054. She was orphaned in MC 056 when Risa, a Knight Errant of the Saint Church, attempted to apprehend a group of gun runners operating out of Kranagan’s lawless lower sectors and was killed for her efforts. With no relatives to take her in and her father’s identity unknown she was placed under the care of the Saint Church and grew up in the church’s orphanage.

Iris grew up surrounded by stories and relics of the glory of the old Belkan Empire and the noble knights who defended the empire's glory and its' people, and decided at a young age that she wanted to be just like the knights in the legends. While she was far from the only child to have such fantasies, unlike most of the children in the Church's orphanage she possessed the drive to chase after her dream as well as the ability to make it come true, and began studying to become a knight with when she was five years old. However she very quickly hit a seemingly insurmountable roadblock when she discovered that her linker core would not respond to her attempts to draw mana out of her reserves, nor would it link mana no matter how hard she worked at the basics of the Mid system.

As the daughter of an active mage, Iris's linker core was already already online and producing mana when Risa gave birth to her, but the core itself was malformed and could not be actively utilized when Iris began her training. It is not clear exactly what caused this deformation in Iris's core, however it is worth noting that Risa made extensive usage of the prototype CVK-71A Cartridge System before the system was made (relatively) safe for usage, and that she was active as a combat mage for the early months of her pregnancy. It is possible that damage caused by the cartridge system was passed on to Iris, much as alcoholism may create birth defects in an infant.

Regardless of the causes, Iris's inability to link mana and utilize spell templates caused her to be rejected from enlistment in the Church's battlemage training program as surely as if she'd been completely non-magical. Discouraged but not defeated by this failure, Iris continued to study what few forms of magic could be used without the usage of the linker core, and from this research pulled the tools that would make her into a knight in spite of her deficiencies.

Iris became known among her peers as a quiet bookworm who was always reading textbooks on magic theory even though it was virtually public knowledge that she'd been rejected from the battlemage program. The more malicious children in her class warped the class's opinion of her until her image among her classmates was that of a girl too stupid to realize she'd never be a mage, and she quickly became something of a joke among her fellow orphans, and even moreso among those who'd actually qualified for the program. Iris took no note of her classmates' jeers and taunts, merely returning to her studies at the end of the day and isolating herself from contact with her peers. On weekends she would often take excursions to the Infinity Library and remain there, browsing the library's depths for many hours at a time, though what exactly she was looking for was anyone's guess.

One day when Iris was eight years old, however, an insult from one of the senior students was met by Iris challenging the boy to a duel rather than simply ignoring him. The boy, who was noted as one of the best knights in the academy at the time, accepted the duel and promptly had his ass handed to him within ten seconds of the match's onset, humiliating him in front of a large chunk of the student body, and more importantly, showing the teachers what Iris had become capable of through her studies. Among those teachers was a young Carim Gracia, who had stopped into the school to conduct business on behalf of her superiors.

Carim took a personal interest in Iris and offered to take the girl under her wing as a squire, an offer Iris happily accepted. Carim quickly learned that Iris had uncovered knowledge of the foundations of the Ancient Belka system, known today as Archaic Belka, and begun training herself in a system so old that it predated the discovery of the linker core. Iris had taught herself skills that had been lost to the Belkan Empire for centuries and that were completely unknown in the TSAB.

Certain that she had stumbled onto something very special, Carim took great pains to round out Iris's education as a combat mage and provide her with the tools she would need to become a knight as she had always wanted to be. Under Carim's guidance, Iris learned workaround solutions to many of her spellcasting issues, learning to make and utilize template cards in lieu of casting spells, and becoming a powerful (if also quite unconventional) mage by Bureau standards. When she was ten years old, Iris's abilities were acknowledged by the Saint Church and she was granted the rank of Knight Errant, the Church's equivalent to the Bureau's Contract Mages.

With her abilities acknowledged, Iris began taking assignments from her new superiors in the church, prioritizing where possible those missions that were likely to bring her into contact with Lost Logia, which held a particular fascination for her. On one mission in particular, however, Iris stumbled upon a situation far too dangerous for a single knight, no matter how skilled, to handle alone...

Description:
Visually speaking, Iris is most easily described by thinking of Ilyasviel von Einsbern cosplaying as Black Rock Shooter. Her head is topped by a mane of silver hair which is usually done up in a set of twintails (except when fighting, where she lets it hang freely), and her red eyes resemble drops of blood on an otherwise pale face. She wears no lipstick, makeup, earrings, or any of the other accessories that girls her age might otherwise be starting to show a bit of interest in. The rest of Iris's body is as fit and healthy as it is possible for a preteen to be.

Iris wears her barrier jacket twenty four hours a day, seven days a week because she sees no reason to change out of it except when bathing or sleeping; along with social interaction, a fashion sense is one of the things she never gained out of her childhood, and keeping a wardrobe of clothes with her seems rather stupid considering that her current outfit offers better protection than anything she could buy in a store.

Iris's barrier jacket consists of a simple black tank top and hot pants covered with a black longcoat which she wears unbuttoned at all times. Her arms and legs are left uncovered but she does wear a pair of knee-high boots and black fingerless gloves.

Personality:
Iris is a proud and headstrong young knight of 11 years and 7 months. She is immensely proud of what she has accomplished and the obstacles she has overcome to become a knight, and possesses an incredible confidence in herself, which is born from knowing exactly what her capabilities are and exactly how special she is among her peers.

Iris has a great respect for personal strength, but in defiance of the stereotype of the Belkan Knight, she applies that respect to all forms of strength, not just martial prowess but also strength of heart and mind. By extension, however, she has absolutely no patience for people she sees as being weak; she despises stupid people ("stupid" as in "ignorant" which includes those who discriminate on the basis of race, age, gender, etc) and those who serve their own interests at the expense of others. Bureaucrats get on her nerves too, but for entirely different reasons, and schoolyard bullies are at the top of her “people to thoroughly humiliate” list, but she doesn’t encounter too many of them in her line of work.

Iris is fairly inept in social situations, as she never had much time in her childhood to make friends and learn the ins and outs of social interaction with her peers. She isn’t completely hopeless in social settings, but she is often painfully blunt and doesn’t seem to understand the concept of tact. She never means to hurt peoples’ feelings (unless dealing with the aforementioned bullies, but they usually have it coming to them), but she doesn’t understand why people don’t just come right out and say what they mean instead of trying to sugarcoat things. Consequentially she is very easy to read and wears her heart on her sleeve at all times.

As she is unable to form magic circles due to her inability to properly utilize her linker core, Iris's powerset is composed entirely of basic spells and abilities common to most mages or those that are extremely easy to cast and do not require a spell template. However her mastery of those basic abilities is second to none in the whole of the Saint Church and probably most of the TSAB as well.

Iris utilizes the Archaic Belka system, an ancient magic system that laid the foundations of Ancient Belka through their discovery of mana as a power that humans could consciously manipulate. It is through this long-lost magic system that Iris is able to outstrip her peers despite her malformed linker core, as the system focuses on bypassing the core entirely (having been invented prior to the discovery of the linker core) to draw energy directly from the mage's mana pool.

Most of Iris’s power comes from her enormous skill in martial arts combined with her talents for shapeshifting; these two talents together turn Iris into a human weapon capable of fighting and besting mages that a normal C-rank would have absolutely no chance against. It should also be noted that Iris’s C-rank mainly comes from her inability to use traditional magic; her mana reserves are roughly equivalent in size to those possessed by a AAA-rank mage, and as previously mentioned her skills with what magic she is able to use is second to none.

Miscellaneous Abilities:
Reinforcement: A basic enhancement spell known by every Belkan knight in existence, as it is the foundation upon which all enhancement spells are created. Reinforcement is technically an Ancient Belkan spell, however Iris has adapted it for usage with the Archaic Belka system with surprising ease. This "spell" (which is more like a technique) consists of Iris channeling mana through her magic circuits into parts of her body to reinforce them physically rather than magically. While this method of enhancement is much less effective than an actual spell, not only does it have a casting time measured in microseconds, but the enhancement stacks with other enhancement and support spells without causing interference in the overlapping spell templates.

Telekinesis: One of the foundations on which Iris's capabilities are created. Telekinesis serves many uses in Iris's list of abilities; it is her only method of flight and levitation, it serves as a potent ranged attack if properly utilized, and it forms the basis of her Mana Burst spell, which is arguably Iris's favorite melee enhancement spell.

Telepathy: An ability so standard among mages that it usually wouldn't even warrant mentioning, however Iris has developed a unique usage for this ability through her habit of mastering every tool in her arsenal. Besides its' usual usage of communicating with allies over long distances, Iris can use her telepathy to emit the magical equivalent of a psychic scream over a wide area. This is the telepathic equivalent of screaming in someone's ear, and while it does no physical damage it is extremely distracting and has great potential as a surprise attack. However like all telepathy it can be blocked out simply by closing one's mind to it and it rarely works more than once against a single person in a single battle.

Shapeshifting: Iris's favorite ability and the most complex spell in her arsenal, which isn't saying much. Shapeshifting is exactly what it sounds like; the ability to alter one's form into another shape. Shapeshifting is most commonly used in modern times to grant a mage a second form, usually a small creature suitable for hiding or getting into and out of tight places (archaeologists are especially fond of this second usage). Iris, however uses this spell for something else entirely; rather than shift her entire body into one form or another, Iris shifts parts of her body into an arsenal of weapons and tools as she needs them. This ability grants her complete control over her body and a staggering amount of flexibility in melee combat.

Common uses of shapeshifting include:

• Prehensile Hair: Using her hair as mid-range melee weapons; blades and fists are common forms but others are also possible. The lengths of hair can be controlled like prehensile limbs and strike with the same amount of force as what Iris can put into her fists and feet.
• Tool and Weapon Creation: Turning her hands into blades, maces, axes, shields, and a wide array of weapons. Simple tools and mundane objects such as lockpicks, combs, pens, toothbrushes, and many other objects can be formed as well. In all cases, weapons formed in this way have the durability of an Armed Device when this spell is combined with Reinforcement.
• Regeneration: Iris can heal shallow wounds and injuries and accelerate blood clotting on her own body. Deep wounds and broken bones still require medical attention, as Iris lacks the knowledge of the healing process needed to imitate it.
• Body of Swords: Iris causes jagged blades to burst out of her body and grants her skin hardness equivalent to an armed device, granting herself a layer of physical armor that is dangerous to attack without a weapon.
• Wings: Iris sprouts a massive pair of white wings from her back. When used in conjunction with her levitation, these improve her maneuverability in the air by a considerable degree.
• Mass Manipulation: Iris can manipulate the mass of her own body to a certain degree through pseudomatter creation. This comes in handy when using her Prehensile Hair, as she can greatly extend her hair’s reach.

Defensive Abilities:

Offensive Abilities:
Mana Burst: An enhancement spell that imbues mana into an object such as a sword or a person’s body, then converts that mana into a burst of kinetic energy. Iris’s favorite enhancement spell, this versatile spell has multiple uses, including enhancing Iris’s movement for short bursts, boosting the power of her melee attacks, and helping her defend against blows from stronger opponents.

Vermilion: Iris’s only shooting spell, and a rather pathetic one at that. Vermilion is a spell-in-progress which Iris is attempting to master as of the summer after Season 1. It consists of forcing a small part of her mana pool to manifest outside of her body and then be launched as a projectile attack. This is extremely difficult for two reasons; first, the mana in the attack is internal mana, which naturally resists being moved about extensively and usually must remain close to the body for spellcasting to be effective. Second, as with all of Iris’s spells, the spell has to be crafted without using a template to form and guide the process, which makes an already difficult task even harder to accomplish. At her present skill level, Vermilion requires several seconds casting time and intense concentration to produce a single projectile which is unguided and has all the destructive power of a strong punch.

The only reason Iris bothers with Vermilion at all is because mastering the basics behind the spell is the key to unlocking a host of additional ranged spells of much greater potency. At her present learning rate, Iris should master this spell and begin utilizing the spell's more advanced variations sometime during the A's/StrikerS timeskip. Until then, Vermilion remains Iris’s weakest spell by a wide margin.

She is seen in an antagonist light as opposite of the order promoted by the local major religion. The Lady is feared by many and worshipped by few, aware of her role as agent of change.

(She also play a greater role on the scale of the solar system, helping Madhyaloka's orbit to remain stable, especially with the influence of the red dwarf companion of the solar system's main star, for as long as she wishes.)

She claims to be that instant between the awake state of a living being and slumber, the instant between the state of before and the Big Bang, and the thin and blurry frontier between chaos and order.

Ahh, Pocky. The quintessential Japanese snack known throughout the world and
extraordinarily popular amongst western otaku and eastern teens alike.

Crunch crunch crunch.

Chocolate, almond, strawberry, these were the original flavors, but they were soon
followed by more exotic ones such as honey, kiwifruit mango, grape, banana, coffee, green
tea, even Kobe wine. Today’s snack was good ol’ chocolate, enjoyed out of a red cardboard
box filled with the snacks.

Crunch crunch crunch.

A taste of home in a place far far away… Midchilda was nice and all, but some times even
battle-hardened veterans longed for something familiar. Thus it was with great pleasure
that Keroko Takamachi enjoy each and every stick.

“Lady Keroko, good afternoon. You seem to be in a happy mood,” a familiar voice from
behind her caused her to whirl around. There, walking down the hall, was the blind knight
Noland Reiniger, still clad in borrowed Belkan priest-wear. Huh. How’d he know she was
there? “What is it that you have there?”

Usually she would horde the snack, a precious commodity, but today she was feeling
pretty good.

“Pocky!” she replied with a big smile. “Want one?”

“Pocky?”

“Oh, right. You’re not from around here.” Or this time period…

“Is it a local delicacy?”

“Hmm, in a way,” Keroko looked at the box. “It’s a snack from Earth, my home planet.
More specifically, Japan. Pretty much, a cracker stick dipped into chocolate. Want to try
it? They’re pretty good.”

“I would, thank you,” Noland nodded, a stick of Pocky soon deposited into his hand.
Carefully he nibbled the treat, though soon he chomped down on it with more energy.

“Hmm, I see why such a snack would be popular,” he again nodded, in approval this time.

Somehow, they came to simply walking down the halls, chatting about random things all
the while snacking on Pocky. From the weather to women, of rumors and rocket launchers,
their conversation jumped all over the place in topic. Strangely, Keroko did not hesitate a
single moment to part with her beloved snack, though it was it not long before they only
had one stick of the tasty luxury left, one that Noland was quick to claim.

“Hey! That’s the last one!” Keroko cried indignantly, immediately reaching for the
pilfered snack.

“And I thank you for your generosity, Lady Keroko,” he held the Pocky high above his
head, far out of reach of the much shorter girl.

“You bastard! Don’t be so mean!” Alas, he had her trumped.

“First come, first serve,” he admonished with small smirk on his face, sticking the snack
into his waiting mouth.

Ah, so the knight did have a sense of humor! Well, two could play at that game!

Keroko darted in, her mouth clamping down on the other end of the Pocky stick.
Immediately, she began to munch away. Noland countered by biting into his own side, the
two of them gradually eating away the stick… and getting ever so closer.

Ten centimeters became eight, then six, until finally at four centimeters did Keroko realize
just how close the two of them were. She froze, a rosy haze threatening to engulf her entire
head. And somehow, it seemed the knight detected the girl’s hesitation.

“Why do you pause, Deathwing?” Noland spoke around his endpiece, still sporting that
small but aggravating smirk. The ace could feel his warm breath, smelling like chocolate,
deepening her blush even more.

Wait, he wanted this?!

By now, Keroko was as red as her hair, from her toes to her top of her head. Since when
did Noland become the aggressor?

He pushed his head forward, the Pocky leverage. Unable to do anything else, the redhead
was forced to move with him, until her back was stopped by the wall. So close, Noland
was; so close… their lips were mere moments apart…

Pock!

The Pocky stick broke in half.

“Hmm… Unfortunate,” slowly, Noland pulled himself away, drawing the last bits of the
snack into his mouth. “When you get more, be sure to find me. Perhaps we can finish what
we started.”

He stepped away, his long priest’s coat swooshing over the floor as he turned around. Still
leaning against the wall, a bright red Keroko could only stare at the departing Knight, her
Pocky end still hanging from her mouth.

“Oi, Reiniger!” her voice was oddly powerful, a hint of rage behind her words

“Yes, lady Keroko?” Noland gracefully turned around at the sound of his name, ever calm

“Zaffy! Ne, Zaffy!” the ever cheerful daughter of Nanoha tugged at her friend’s blue robes.

“Hmm? What is it, Vivio?” Zafira peered down at the girl, though he knew already what
she was so excited about.

“I got Pocky!” she proudly held up her box of snacks. “They’re strawberry!”

“Ooh, that’s nice, Vivio,” the wolf, currently a man, smiled and ruffled the girl’s hair. “I
wonder if Hayate got me a box too…”

“Don’t worry, you can have one of mine!” gleefully, Vivio popped the box top and fished
out one of the strawberry Pocky treats.

“Here!” she held out the sugar covered stick.

Smiling his thanks, Zafira reached down to pluck the snack from her hands, only to have it
retracted with a shake of her head. She opened her mouth and made an “ahh!” sound,
suggesting that he do the same. Ahh, how troublesome, this child was. With a sigh, he
consented and crouched down, mouth moving in for the kill.

And suddenly… damn. Maybe he was getting slow with his age, or maybe Vivio was
getting reeeaaalllly fast, but somehow she managed to flip the stick around and chomp
down on it at the same time he bit into his end. As a result, a bridge was formed. Ten
centimeters now separated them.

A bright flash grabbed his attention, his eyes darting over to the source. There, by the door,
certain hammer knight grinned cheekily as she looked up from the digital camera in her hands.
Winking, she flashed a V sign before dashing out of the room.
