What happen to Yui these past episodes really makes it feel weird. I like her better when she was all strict and cold hearted because it really suits her character and the sudden attractiveness to Yuuya was rather quick, no really quick.

It never occurred to me last ep but forget about Yuuya, give me Yui X Cryska!
Seems I still lack training in the ways of yuri, guess I better go watch some more of it. Besides the awesome fanservice, the "serious" side of these last 2 eps has not been good. Still stand that this whole "beach" thing should have been a OVA and just worked (better) character development in the story while keeping on focus. Like some others this really is just like a highschool romcom, almost as bad as Freezing(I deplore how it handles "impending world doom" there) But again it's hard to argue against how good Yui looks, I really do find her just "WOW!". However I think we could have done without the school swimsuits, we didn't need them here but then that's the Japanese for ya Oh and can't complain against seeing more of the Megane-chan An episode I want to hate for being in the wrong series but still like cause of what it is....Curse em!>_<

I'd do have to agree that the tropes being thrown into this fan service episode feels out of place in this more mature setting. Most of the characters are adults, yet the way the episode played out is really no different compared to your typical high school harem comedy genre. It probably would have been more consistent if they dealt with more mature themes/tropes that would be more appropriate to the character's ages.
Still loved Yui and the Scarlet Twins in their full mizugi glory in the end of the episode.

Other than the idea that Yui's changes in personality are coming out of nowhere I do have to agree with the assesment that this episode was poor and that they've now taken the whole fanservice/romcom aspect of the show one step to far. The balance is now definitely off as we get further and further away from the conflict that is ravaging humanity. I think it was the last scene of the episode that pushed it over the edge for me. It's really hard to take the situation seriously now when we've gone from doomsday scenarios to hard boiled training scenarios with light fanservice to full on high school poolside shennagins of lets ogle and harass the commanding officer who just went through some reasonably serious revelations not 90 seconds earlier.
That being said, I've been noticing subtle changes in Yui's personality since episode 05 that started to fester into regret by episode 6 and now it seems like she's just looking for another person of her own race that she thinks has a hope of relating to her, but is unwilling to admit it do to pride and thus her attempts to talk with Yuuya just come off as a mess of aggressive advances that turn into petty arguments. Childish? Perhaps, but she is young and has been suddenly ripped away from the life she knew in Japan and forced to become an expatriate. That's gotta be eating away at her on some level and causing her to have some issues. That's why it's kind of a shame that Muv-Luv has failed to balance it's tone with this arc. It makes it hard to take in all these subtle bits of detail we are learning about the more major characters when it comes with their off model breasts and ass being thrust in our face and them being subject to the camera all but ogling them at every opportunity while the rest of the cast (which by the way so far continues to be pretty one dimensional) acts like horny schoolboys. I'm glad that apparently next episode sees the Beta being reintroduced, because to be honest it can't come soon enough. |

I thought this was a show about... something....
What it should not be about is how many times the animators can start a shot at a torso (front or back) and pan the camera up to a characters face. (Go count how many times that shot happened in this episode.) Fan service can have its place... But not in place of story. There are enough series out these days about fan service and nothing else. There are very few mature series about grand themes. Those few shows do not need fan service getting in the way of story. Let the story play its course. There is enough stuff to do/see in this universe without having to resort to how many bakini butt shots can be crammed into 22 min. of air time. This series is so mixed up it does not know what it wants to be. It is every genera! When do the cute mass marketable mascots pop out? When do we see the first spell cast? They have pretty much covered every other genera in this series, so why not go for a clean sweep? *epiphany* I think I know what this show is trying to be. MLA:TE is trying to be GUNBUSTER! (Girls, pilot training, failure, tragedy, space bugs, giant robots, romance, training with people from all over the world/solar system, two girls/one robot, lots of genera covered throughout) If you are not Hideki Anno and you do not work for Gainex then do not try to make another Gunbuster. Next week: Back to Starship Troopers x Gundam! Oh yeah! Last edited by PonSquared; 2012-08-12 at 23:07. Reason: Toning it down a bit. Too many rough edges. |

IMO the main problem with the series so far is that after generating so much shock and buzz in episode 2, the subsequently episodes failed to maintain it or provide a constant reminder of the horror, that it feels like a completely different show.
Yes we saw those Beta in simulating training, but they could have easily been replaced by something else. Having them in training also damper down the eerie terror aspect that came with them in ep2. Who knows, maybe this is the end of the fun times and tragedy will follow just like one particular series last year. We are still waiting for the second sacrificial day. Hopefully that starts next episode. But man those past episodes feel so slow.

Wasn't that fan service punishment at the end sexual harassment. I mean really, for a force meant to help save humanity from extinction, they sure don't act like military personnel. More like a frat house.
Look forward to the next episode, heres hoping we get a nice action packed episode. We've had enough character develop and fan service. |

Ep. 7 felt way too short - I guess it was because we were only at about 3 different scenes for that whole 20 something minutes, plus a lot of dialogue, little action. I did love the character interactions though; Yui in denial, curious Cryska, and confused Yuuya. XD
That scene was hilarious. Wow her thoughts were so transparent after all that. What surprises me is that when I saw ep. 1 I never thought she would turn out to be this kind of character at all. A pouting tsundere. |

All too easy to go for the low hanging fruit. Why bother construct a story when you can add a couple swimsuits + a harem to get the attention of all the IS fans. It's pretty hard to take this seriously anymore which is a plus, I shall watch on with no more expectation/baggage.
