Windows Remote Desktop Connection: Audio Streaming
Included within Windows is a program called "Remote Desktop Connection" (RDC). It does what it says - it's a remoting program, similar to VNC.
As those of you familiar with it know, RDC has the ability to bring audio from the remote computer to your system's speakers. The streaming quality, from my observations, is variable; I've experienced virtually no quality loss to compression at abysmal levels. All of this is automated by the program which, I presume, bases the quality level around connection factors. What I'd like to know is, is there a way to manually set and/or adjust the streaming quality? I've searched around the net, including Microsoft's FAQ on RDC, and couldn't come up with anything useful. Though I appreciate any intent to provide me with better streaming alternatives to RDC, please note that it's unnecessary. I do use Shoutcast for when I want to do some serious music streaming to myself. Don't worry over the notion of me using RDC for the audio streaming without knowing that there's something better out there In advance, thank you for any replies and/or effort put into finding a solution for me.

There are no options with regard to quality aside from the "connection type" specified in the Options dialog under "Experience" in the Remote Desktop client.
I'm not sure -how- it decides what level of compression to use, but there is no direct means of controlling it. Believe me, I wish there was. I use remote desktop all the time and carting my portable HDD back and forth is a bit annoying, but better than the noise remote desktop produces. |
