don't know about you guys, but I really like her character, even if she did what she did.

She kinda reminds me of Cal Devens from Phantom of Inferno/Requiem for Phantom

Which is one of Urobuchi's first magnum opus

Despite everything -or perhaps in part because of it -she's one of my favorite characters in the show. She's interesting, and while she may not be very nice I still find her sympathetic somehow. I think she really loved her dad, and now that he's gone she has no one and nowhere to go, on top of which I think she hates herself. I'm actually inclined to think of her attempt on Asseylum as an act of desperation.

I do find her backstory somewhat suspect though. Seriously, what kind of covert operative brings his one year old daughter with him on a long term assignment? Its kind of ridiculous that she thinks of herself as a martian and hasn't developed connections to Earth or its people after living there for fifteen years. Though if she really was that isolated I guess it explains a bit about her.

Whatever else you might think about her, hard to justify that Rayet isn't at least borderline psychotic after what happened in the last episode. I hope the series acknowledges that and doesn't brush right past it to the redemption scene.

Rayet is like my 2nd favorite female character for this series.

Well if Asseylum dies, then Rayet will advance to my 1st favorite

Since she was named as "Sniper Girl", hope she becomes the next Lockon Stratos in terms of sniping capability =w=

Very good post. I agree with pretty much everything you wrote here.

Rayet might not be a likeable person, but I do feel some sympathy for her, and she's very interesting.

In addition to what you wrote, I like how she sometimes comes across as a female Inaho (very logical, very pragmatic, straightforward in what she says, no frills), and yet she's just simmering with all of these strong emotions just below the surface. That's a neat internal contrast.

I think it's pretty clear that she was very close to her father. In that photo of the two of them, she's brightly smiling, whereas I don't think she's smiled even once since Trillram killed her father. Her father was probably by far the most important person in her life, and I think she feels a bit lost without him. And I think she's struggling to find something to fill this gaping void in her heart and in her life given the death of her father.

Right now I think she's trying to fill that void with a totally encompassing desire for revenge on all Martians.

Rayet's a pretty fascinating character for some of the things you touched upon. She's 16, and her father and his spy cell have been in deep cover for 15 years. This suggests that either she was born on Mars and her father took her with him when he went to do his job. Or she stayed on Mars for a while and then went to live with him later on. My theory is closer to the first one and that her mother died during childbirth or shortly thereafter. Her father Wolf Areash was a poor commoner soldier under one of the nobles and there was an opportunity to gain more money, land, and prestige if he volunteered to be a deep-cover spy on earth. He had no other family, no one to take care of baby Rayet, so, he took his daughter and went to Earth.

Rayet probably grew up in Earth society, but her father kept her completely isolated and separate from it. He reminded her of Vers and to be proud to be a Martian. He taught her about life on Mars and the life they were working towards. Her father probably trained her in everything she knows at a young age, from driving, to knowing her firearms, to how to pilot a kataphrackt, to hand-to-hand combat and even how to kill. He and their cell was probably the only family, friends and company she ever knew. Her whole world, was that spy cell. She wasn't allowed to be part of Earth, and she never really remembered Mars except through her father's tales. So, when everyone was killed, she basically lost the only world she knew, and now in a way, she's basically floundering between both Earth and Mars, part of both and yet belonging to neither.

And for a 16 year old, who already has a lot of emotions going on already, it's really just a recipe for disaster. Think about it. Rayet is totally alone. Everyone else who has lost a lot, at least has other friends and family they can lean on. Rayet has yet to truly make friends and she really doesn't know how since she's been cut off from the Terran world. Without some change to the status quo, it was inevitable that she was going to snap sooner or later.

Rayet likely came to Earth on 2010 or whenever the year the anniversary of peace was celebrated. That's the best way to have sneaked in.

I hope that she doesn't receive redemption,is interrogated and finally executed. They're in the middle of a war and she attempted to kill someone important. She should not receive any slack for her deeds. Slack is not given irl for this and I doubt that they have the manpower to put her in prison for life.

What's the point to kill her so quick other than make princess fans happy

I have high expectation of her to do something even more crazy

Wow, never knew that. They had to have planned that. Yeah, her father's name is mentioned in some of the decoded material as well as credits.

I wonder if there is any significance to the two of them being named after a type of star/nebula/celestial formation?

She basically picked the most convenient, vulnerable and available target for her rage since realistically she can't do much else on her own really. Even the whole thing with her getting the final shot against that one female knight was just shooting an enemy that was already down anyway. The equivalent of stealing a kill in Call of Duty by shooting somebody that's in Last Stand mode.

I don't really see much turning back for her at this point even should Asseylum survive so basically the most logical choice for her would be to flee the ship, but where do you go and what do you do if you're her. This shows all about expecting the unexpected though so more than likely that's not what happens at all.

Rather than the most convenient and whatnot, her attitude towards Asseylum is more like looking at a reflection of herself as a secreted Martian. But in ep.9 she's in a status of denial, and killing is actually the most direct action of denial, saving the trouble of argument and reasoning.

If she's going to flee then she can only wander around until someone found her. But I highly doubt that's how this show turns out. She's more likely to need to face her trauma in the time coming.

But after attacking the Princess, there's no way she's going to be left outside of a prison somewhere. Unless, she's captured and spills the beans leading to a radio that Seylum can use to contact Mars.

She could even have come to Earth quite recently, though if it was just a short term mission one wonders why her father would bother bringing her with him. I guess the supplementary materials don't provide any detail about this? How long she's been on Earth would be useful to know when it comes to analyzing her character.
