It’s.......fun and fine, I guess. They kinda went with the Ready Player One ending but without most of the stakes so I don’t feel much (if anything at all). The battles execution are properly exciting for an arc climax and that’s it.
I actually got more kick seeing the return of the “evil Haro” from Gundam 00 that turned out to be the main villain of the arc (or at least he chose that avatar for some reason). One of my major gripes with this episode is that Sarah & 00 Diver become both Chekov’s Gun and Deus Ex Machina at the same time. And I don’t really like how this Riku newbie player suddenly becomes the savior of the entire VRMMO and downright outshining everyone. I mean, not even SAO is this bad and convenient when it comes to “savior MC”. For example, Kirito was already a beta-tester veteran at the start of the SAO story, same with the MC in Ready Player One. Here, everything seems to just fall into Riku’s lap in the form of a waifu named Sarah + the power of will. This might not be a bad writing for a little kid’s show but even on that level, it’s really convenient and mediocre. I mean, Riku is not even a newtype at this point. Sarah practically just gave him the necessary tools to win this big fight. Also, I might get roasted by saying this, but isn’t Riku a bit too wish-fulfillment-y even for Build Fighters series? I mean, this guy fights in his cool Gundam with his babe by his side in the cockpit almost every time ever since he met her, and everybody (sans the villains and loser characters) just downright likes him and he got many favors from veteran and top players. Even Sekai has one or two non-villain detractors in-show and Reiji is just weird since he's from another planet/dimension and has his own shortcomings when it comes to common sense. If we look at it that way, Riku really feels like a privileged MC. I mean, do some other GBN newbie players went to everything as fast and as smoothly as Riku and his group? I don’t think so. I just don't feel much struggle from Riku the way other BF MCs did. Reiji and Sekai might be geniuses but we got events where they got their asses totally handed to them by their peers, while Riku had kinda-sorta negative outcome after facing Ogre before he becomes the savior of GBN in this episode. I’ve never seen an MC this privileged since.......Kio? If anyone wants to engage me on a discussion about this, feel free to do so. I’d like to hear other opinions. The way he shout it is the same too, as well as the stance and the beam-emitting sword. This can't be a coincidence.

Well..the mecha is the hero...not the mc lol
I mean....00 +trans am is so damn op...but kinda sad 00d cant use excalibur like 00 raiser but at least we can see wing of light 00d ver.....but that 00d WoL is less wow than WoL 00 in the last 2 eps....maybe budget problem... And next eps...riku will feel how the real gunpla batle like sei and sekai....hope we can get another epic fight like sei vs meijin (zaku vs build strike eps is so damn epic) |

So everything was very conveniently resolved by a deus ex machina, which wasn't really one actually because Sarah was build up as special since the beginning. Still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
The only thing I liked was Tsukasa being a haro because he was using a guest account. And for once, the battles weren't too bad. Next episode looks interesting. A gunpla battle like in the old days.

I can't say I'm completely surprised about the whole "growing glowing wings that solve everything" direction they took since Sarah has been implied to have some sort of ability and this show has never really tried to break away from cliches, but it's not a direction I'm pleased about.

I would agree with @Obelisk ze Tormentor 's opinion about Riku. He's becoming more of a self-insert goody-two-shoes OP character with no faults often seen in bad light novels.
I hoping that the next ep where Riku and Tsukasa do Gunpla battles the old-fashioned way knock some sense into him. I mean, in there there's no VR space magic and no waifus to stand by your side giving you deus-ex-machinas, only your skills as a builder and a fighter.

IMO this show would have benefitted from the main group having a person connecting them to GBN and it's community from the start, like an older sibling/cousin or something in the Avalon force. It then becomes similar to someone introducing a relative into an industry/company for a job or just for networking purposes. Would have felt much more natural, then they could always write off said person's lack of appearance by being busy IRL/living somewhere else/busy with their own force so our main group still have to do the stuff they been doing on their own. As for next week: Riku's been playing Overwatch, now it's time for him to play CS against a vet F |

This new MC is an absolute Gary Stu in comparison. He is like Kirito but worse since Kirito actually got some trauma from "friends" dying....this guy just gets handed crap for no real reason. I am not even sure why he is so good at the game...our previous protags relied on Extensive Meta Knowledge, Real World Combat Skill Application and Genius in some combination. There is simply no struggle not even the semblance of struggle.
That is not even accounting for the whiplash in GBF they went over the top with treating cheating at Gunpla as super serious with a whole International Force to grab cheaters...here they cannot even be bothered to hand out bans or patch the game for cheats... |

That was pitiful.
The two earlier shows that ran on actual magic pixie dust managed to be more reasonable then this. If the decal virus gave them as much control over the mmo as the admins said what was the point of the fight at all? They could have crashed the servers at will while releasing all the players' personal info and credit card numbers. And then used their magic log and video generating power to show that the admins were using the games to setup a child porn ring. That would have flushed it right down the toilet in a few days. No painfully stupid battle required. |
