I was wondering your opinions about this?

Looks like its quite serious because a few Japanese sites already closed their so they won't get in any trouble... :/

this makes it a whole less scary
downloading things is illegal nearly everywhere D: however as long as people don't get kidnapped from their beds or desks hardly anything will change

Oh Thank God. Nobody's gonna pull a Stalin on me for the downloaded copies of Yu Yu Hakusho, Casshern Sins and True Blood. That would've been scary

In b4 Japanese citizens set up servers in European countries that don't give a shit and in doing so completely bypass yet another poor attempt to stop piracy through the idiotic method of punishing everyone.

hope they don't set them up here, the government is passing a bill now that downloading is illegal as well as home use copying
and otherwise Brein will see it as a new way of income through lawsuit

I don't imagine this will stop anyone from downloading, to be perfectly honest.

Remember folks, the Internet treats censorship as a malfunction and routes around it. It doesn't matter what the fat old white guys do, really.

Despite the face that everyone hates it (or so it seems), this is one of the reasons i support crunchyroll. Ya, you may have a problem with their business model, or you don't like the quality, but if some law actually manages to shut down downloads, at least i'll have a channel, within a week or two of the original release.

Onto this particular topic, i don't see this law doing much. It defines no punishments thereby there is nothing to enforce. The uploading side won't change, but people are doing it now.

Even though there is no punishment now it doesn't mean there won't be. They're simply introducing the idea to the general public, fully knowing that people will get afraid, so this will let them get used to the idea.

After a few years or copyright lobbying the industry will gain the power to legally destroy people

That's true. I just hope we get encrypted and truly anonymous P2P-networks soon.

Hmm. I'm white, approaching sixty, and have a few extra pounds myself. Am I in this category?

I see a lot of casual ageism on these forums despite it's general openness to differences in race, religion, sexual preference, and the like. We "fat old white guys" are no more homogeneous than any other group.

I'm going to wager a guess that fat, old white guys don't hold much political sway in Japan, anyways.

Unless we're going to get really technical and argue Japan is a client state to the US, but that is another issue entirely.

I should clarify that "fat old white guy" is my personal euphemism for American politicians.

I don't mean to offend. ^^;

Heh... I have to admit its a term I've used myself though I'm more apt to use the "good old boys club" to define the sort of people being referred to (the Foghorn Leghorn type of club, I say there...). I've also been guilty of saying that under-seasoned food tasted like it was made for "white people".

And yes, I'm white, 52, ... and the BMI says I'm overweight though I think there's some bogosity to that (doesn't account for musculature).

They should set up the servers in my country, where piracy is legal and encouraged.
