1: I am surprisingly anxious that this season might break compatibility with Amplitude Studios Endless Universe, they fit just too good together to not be related
2: I think Yang's bracelets got a bit smaller? Not sure though.
3: Weiss dust manipulation seems have gotten some buffs.
4: The guy with the assault rifle didn't get to do anything in the match.
5: I really like these little flavours like the patrolling robots introduced last season.
6: The 4th one on the evils team reminded me of the time manipulating one from "Date a Live" (Dress, diffrent eyes, and a world-class psychotic smile)
7: Poor Weiss, she just wanted to brag a bit with her families fortune.
8: Nora can be in despair? Thats a new one.

Pyhra is based on Thor? I always though her to be based on Athene. She basically IS Athene.

Huh? No.

Nora is based on Thor - you know, thunder, hammer, red hair.

Pyrrha is based on Achilles, who used the name 'Pyrrha' when he was pretending to be a lady-in-waiting on Skyros.

Athena never crossdressed, and all of the JNPR characters are genderswapped versions of mythological or historical crossdressers.

@DMurphy Oh, must have misunderstood something then. When you factor in the cross-dressing element Achilles fits for Pyrrha too. Still: shield, spear, cleverness and headress (not exactly a helmet), I'll keep with Athene for her.

Just pointing out the crossdressing thing isn't just a coincidence or fan speculation; it comes directly from Monty himself. That takes Athena completely out of the running.

(Also, shield/spear/helmet is the standard battle kit for a Mycenean warrior; it's not exclusive to Athena in any way.)

To complete the team, Lie Ren is Mulan, and Jaune Arc is...well, let's just say his middle name probably starts with a "D"...

Volume 3 episode 1

Lackluster fights.

Ruby merrily cavorting with murderers.

Security oblivious to infiltrators.

It's like the "Superman Effect." Take off the glasses and put on a spandex suit and nobody, not a single person in the show, dimwit or brilliant intellect, can tell that it's Clark Kent, but everyone in the audience knows. It's just too stupid for words. As a plot device, it's second only to the "Poor Jaune" arc in stupidity.

The best thing about this episode was the very first scene, Ruby's eulogy to Monty Oum. Brilliant. One of, if not the very best scene in the entire canon so far. Unfortunately, the rest of the episode did not come close to living up to it.

Have to disagree about the fight, but I guess it's just a difference of opinion.

Compared to the original four trailers, Ruby and Glynda's fight with Roman, the fight with Big Bird, etc., or even the Food Fight, this fight did not have the same level of excitement for me. Perhaps it was too many combatants with not enough focus on each individual to make me care whether or not they won or lost. RWBY fighting a nameless group as the first fight of the new season? We already know who's going to win. Big deal.

Well that's kind of expected since we all know the choreographer is different for obvious reasons. A lot of the viewers of the previous 2 seasons were already exposed to some of Monty's other works so they already knew what they were getting. In this case most people don't know what to expect from the new guy, or don't know the work he's done.

Basically everybody will be coming in with probably unfairly high expectations since the new guy has rather huge shoes to fill. Honestly I think it's too early to say what to expect from the fights this season.

My expectations for the quaility of the fights in volume 3 are not particularly high. You attribute "the new guy" for the lack of choreographical splendor of this new fight, but, for me, except for the food fight, I can barely remember any of the other fights in volume 2 (which did not overwhelmingly impress me), whereas I can clearly remember volume 1's fights.

Hopefully the fights will get better and, hopefully, they will take up the vast majority of the show's time so I don't have to face-palm my way through the show's silly "dramas."

^Neo vs Yang.
Ruby on heels vs Cinder.
Pyrrha beating down 4 punks flowing into a bout with Mercury.
RWBY vs that robot.

There were enough nicely done fights for me in volume 2 aside from food fight. I didn't like the tournament's fight, though.

The worst thing about the fight, I think, is the inevitability of it. In the trailers, we didn't know the characters, so we could still be "wowed" by what happened. By now, we do know them, the outcome is inevitable, and the opposition is irrelevant. The only attraction is the spectacle and interactions. I liked it fine, but I can see how the lack of emotional tie to any of what's going on could easily lead to a yawn. It's a "meet the cast!" fight like V2's food fight, except without the humor of it being a superpowered food fight and no interest in the opposing team.

I really have to disagree with the "Superman" comment, though. Neo is explicitly an illusionist and while her face doesn't noticeably change (beyond her eye color), it's not like faces are actually all that distinctive in-show (plus, it's established that RWBY has never seen Cinder and Neo fight as part of Emmy and Merc's team; it's entirely possible that they've never seen Neo at Beacon at all to make the comparison). And Ruby and Glynda are the only ones who've seen Cinder face-to-face--once when her face was completely in shadow and a long distance away in the door of a moving airplane (and even the audience didn't see it) and once when her face was covered by a mask. This isn't Lois Lane working every day with Clark and then getting carried around in Superman's arms every five minutes.

Episode 2

So Qrow is quite literally your drunk uncle at the bar. That's hilarious.

The two fights weren't that good but they showcased how Jaune has become a really good leader and how Neptune is a complete pussy. Then again this was probably the funniest episode of the series so far.

Seriously though it's starting to feel a bit like... they're trying to compensate the relative void in the fight choreography department by improving not only the technical animation but expanded characterization, comedy probably some degree of drama. That may or may not be a problem for many people in the long run who were brought in specifically for the fights. It's a rather noticeable shift in direction which, again, may or may not bite the show in the ass as it goes along. At some point they'll REALLY need to impress on the fights or they'll lose a large part of the fanbase. Personally I like the fact that they're trying to explore the rest of the setting, but I still want to see a reminder of why I was drawn to the show in the first place.

Edit - Oh god that Blake face my heart can't take itpodijasld,ml

Spoiler for Blakeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee:

^ completely agree with you. JNPR's opening for their match was weak but it got better. SSSN's match was so-so. Didn't expect the tournament to dominate the episode but seems like next episode will be development heavy to make up for this, with Qrow and Winter making their entrance into the festival properly.
