Probably favorite overall (meaning that the series would fall apart without them)...Sagara Sousuke from Full Metal Panic. His reactions and reflexes and personality are simply golden. I could define them here, but you all should know what i mean; especially when he encounters issues with girls. PRICELESS!!

Females:
Urd and Mara (Ah! My Goddess!) - my all-time favourites since manga, Urd is Hot and Mara is cool and amusing in the same time, together they're the best anime duo
Natsuki Kuga (Mai-HiME) - strong, beautiful and cute
Nao, Shiho and Chie (My Otome) - they're all absolutely different, but every one has extremely interesting personality
Ms Deep (Read or Die) - hot, strong and amusing
Akane Aikawa (Mahou Tsukai Tai) - not-so-sweet teenager
Kirche (Zero no Tsukaima) - she reminds me my beloved Urd
Tomoyo (Card Captor Sakura) - just sweet
Nagato Yuki (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu) - another type I like, calm book-lover, who really can fight when it's needed
Mokona (Tsubasa/XXXHolic/Rayearth) - just because

Oh well, too many of them already.

Males:
Yue, Kero, Suppy (Card Captor Sakura) - all these guys have something... misterious... and make me laugh like crazy, especially the last two
Fay (Tsubasa Chronicles) - he's misterious, yeah, again
Kouryuu (Wish) - kawaii demon

Lol yeah, if I have to have to say a favored character, it would definately be Gutts! Hes so cool. =D I forgot to say one of my other favorites though, and that would be good ol' Vash. (Your avatar reminded me Blood) OH and D!! Can't forget that badass. (From Vampire Hunter D) A shorter list would be my most hated anime characters lol.

I don't know if it's cliche to say but Fujioka Haruhi, because she is not like most anime sterotypes, her personality is very lovable. =]

I think I will adore anyone character that displays originality, I can say Haruhi is my winner.

Hunter X Hunter
Killua He has a dark side, mysterious, strong. Initially may seem brooding but a very funny person who thinks fish are creepy and can be cheeky and hilarious when he turns into his cat like imitation..

Hisoka He can be a sadistic evil villain one moment and a powerful ally the next. Quite charismatic and sensual. He looks quite human after a shower.

One Piece
Zoro

He's very driven, serious, strong, loyal and yet has absolutely no sense of direction and do some really crazy training.
Chopper Selfless, wary, gullible and yet so cuteeeee especially when he tries to hid the fact that he's happy when he's praised and when he panic.

Naruto
Shikamaru

Intelligent yet lazy and likes to daydream. What can i say.. i like smart guys..

There are others like Ichigo from Bleach or Yoh from Shaman King.. But they don't really stand out much.. Because the plot usually emphasize a certain attribute like for example, Yoh in his laziness and kindness that gain him a lot of friends. I guess my favourite characters are from anime which have great character development.

Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost In The Shell: The ultimate femme fatale!

Batou from Ghost In The Shell: I lost my liking for big, tough guy characters after Arnold Schwarzenegger butchered this kind of persona to bits. Batou rekindled that though.

Togusa from Ghost In The Shell: Togusa has a very interesting sense of intuition, but the biggest reason for my liking him is that he's one of the best odd-one-out characters. (He has the least cybernetic augmentations in Section 9.)

Takenori Akagi from Slam Dunk: I like the way he can turn from a serious, disciplined strategist to a hilarous raging berserker whenever Sakuragi Hanamichi pisses him off.

Edward Elric from Hagane no Renkinjutsushi: He can be a total idiot, rude, chibi, asshole and blushful all at once, or he can be dead serious, depressed, apologetic and easy to sympathise with all at once. Emotionally versatile characters are a favorite of mine.

Uzumaki Naruto from, well, Naruto: Very much alike in personality compared to Edward, but definitely more crass, stupider and clumsier. His earnestness more than makes up for these though.

Amaha Masane from Witchblade: Although made popular due to her MILF status, Masane is not all boobs (and the clumsiness to justify animation and display of her goodies), however, since she has a pretty good range of emotions she's good at expressing, especially in scenes involving her role as a mom. You don't often get an anime mother for a main character.

Sakura Kinomoto from Cardcaptor Sakura: She's the first bishoujo that I truly endear to. Any other bishoujo whom I come across later gets scoffed at.

Pino from Ergo Proxy: Genuine, endearing cuteness need not come from a flesh-and-blood girl. Pino's a refreshing change from the legions of irritating bishoujo's out there who are unabashed clones of Sakura Kinomoto.

My personal favourites, varied as they may be in personality, all share the following common traits:

1) Kind and Warm Hearted
2) Brave and Heroic
3) Compassionate and Just
4) Sweet and/or Cute and/or Huggable (One out of 3 will qualify)
5) Painfully Cute When They Are Crying, and Makes You Wanna Protect Them.
6) Will Make (or already are) Excellent Moms and Dads.

Here Goes:

1) Son Goku/Kakarot and Prince Vegeta of Dragonball Z tying First Place as Champions.
2) Honda Tohru of Fruits Basket and Kamigishi Akari of To Heart tying equal second.
3) Yuumura Kirika of Noir. and Multi HMX12 tying equal third.
4) Kira Yamato of Gundam Seed and Li Kohran of Sakura Wars tying at fourth place.
5) Himura Kenshin of Ruroni Kenshin.
6) Tokiha Mai of Mai Hime and Ninomai Kisaragi of Happy Lesson tying at equal sixth.
7) Aoba Kozue of Mahoraba. (And All Her Other Personalities)
8) Cagalli Yulla Athha of Gundam Seed and Kurosaki Sayoko of Mahoraba Tying at Equal 8th Place.
9) Yomiko Readman of Read Or Die.
10) Maehara Shinobu of Love Hina and Roberta of Black Lagoon coming Equal Tenth.

Tomo - Azumanga Daioh ( she's hyper-active) ,meh speaking of AD, I actually likes all the character, they all are so well developed

Harima Kenji - School Rumble ,cant find a word to describe him, he' s .... bada$s

Imadori - School Rumble , just for his "ultimate spinning" LAWL

Suzumiya Haruhi - TMoSH - ownz

Sagara Sousuke - Full Metal Panic , a very unique character, really likes how he react ,especially on the almight Fumoffu

Vash The Stampede (because he's in the first Anime i saw and he was cool)
Himura Kenshin (reminds me of the old days where i was reading the manga)
Train Heartnet
Rosette Christopher (talk about a rocking nun guys haha!)
Lucy (in Elfen Lied, she's too cool, and i'm talking about the character itself and not just because of her power)
Sagara Sousuke (like just said above my post, he's very unique and i love this character)
Fujiwara Takumi (he's hell of a driver!)
Enma Ai (The Jigoku Shoujo)
Harima Kenji (Haha, i think he's the main attraction in SR, he's to priceless!)
Kyon (His style, sarcasms, etc, His narration in SHnY!)
Blue (I loved her in Wolf's Rain, human form, and yet, she totally needs more screen time
