Operation Tsukiji: Tokyo prepares to battle rats as iconic fish market shuts
Quote:
Tokyo (Sept 12, 2018): The operation must be ruthless, thorough and silent. Without alerting the watchful enemy, a unit of highly trained Japanese agents will throw up a ring of steel to block any escape from the vast battleground.

Despite being vastly outnumbered, the unit's chief commander is confident of total victory against the enemy army: tens of thousands of rats expected to scurry loose when the world-famous Tsukiji fish market closes next month.

The 23ha market near Tokyo's swanky Ginza district is home to "not thousands but tens of thousands" of rats, attracted by fish offcuts and the market's maze of sewers, according to Tatsuo Yabe, a rat expert.

To prevent a mass exodus of rodents from Tsukiji, Tokyo officials — helped by veteran rat exterminators — are busy blocking pipe and sewer exits, and plugging holes in fences with corrugated sheets.

Before the market is torn down, they will erect an impregnable 3-metre steel wall around the site and slowly move in through the perimeter to "corner and catch" the rats, said the operation's commander, who asked not to be named.

In addition, they will install 40,000 sticky sheets to catch rodents, along with traps and 300kg of rat poison.

Tokyo exterminator GP Corporation has told clients in the area to keep their eyes peeled.

"We are calling on them to stay vigilant and not even keep the doors open because sewer rats may come right in once the moving starts," said Mr Kazuya Takahashi from the company.

I can't help but be reminded of this scene from Mononoke Hime:
Quote:
OKKOTO: Look on my tribe, Moro. We grow small, and we grow stupid. We will soon be nothing but squealing game that the humans hunt for their meat.

MORO: You'd risk everything on one last battle. That's just what the humans want.

OKKOTO: I do not ask for the help of the Wolf Tribe. Even if everyone of us dies, it will be a battle the humans will never forget.

Japan lands two "hopping" probes on asteroid Ryugu.

https://www.space.com/41912-japanese...-asteroid.html

Quote:
The rovers are part of the MINERVA-II1 program, and are designed to hop along the asteroid's surface, taking photographs and gathering data.
JAXA has been responsible for other recent achievements using robotic probes. The Kaguya probe discovered a huge cave on the Moon which could be used as a manned base.

BTS T-shirt: Japanese TV show cancels BTS appearance
over atomic bomb shirt:

"A Japanese TV show has cancelled an appearance by hugely popular K-pop group
BTS, amid controversy over a shirt worn by one of the band members.

A picture of Jimin wearing a T-shirt depicting the US atomic bombing of Japan, which
killed hundreds of thousands of people, started being shared online.

It stirred anger among some Japanese BTS fans, who called it an "insult".

BTS later apologised to its fans for not being able to make an appearance.

The "atomic bomb" T-shirt also featured Korean independence slogans.

It was seen by some in Japan as celebrating the bomb which eventually led to the
independence of the Korean peninsula from Japanese colonial rule.

Japan and Korea's shared wartime history remains an extremely sensitive topic in
both countries."

Absolutely cuntish move by BTS. Let's say it as it is.

Even Americans, who did the bulk of the war in the Pacific and dropped the bombs themselves, have not steeped themselves to such lows on that topic after all of that time.

Crazy in love? The Japanese man 'married' to a hologram:

"Akihiko Kondo's mother refused an invitation to her only son's wedding in Tokyo this
month, but perhaps that isn't such a surprise: he was marrying a hologram.

"For mother, it wasn't something to celebrate," said the soft-spoken 35-year-old, whose
"bride" is a virtual reality singer named Hatsune Miku."

News that will likely be meet with amusement from Kantai Collection fans and may make cringe others, especially China and South Korea.

Japan is looking to purchase F35B for their Izumo-class "helicopter" Destroyers, especially "Kaga".

Helicopter-carriers they said. wwwww

That was kind of obvious from the start. Much like the older Harriers on similar helicopter carriers.

Also considering the Kaga is about the scale of Zuikaku, that's is reasonable role (roughly the size of modern helicopter carriers....or LPHs in the USN.

The slow pace of rebuilding after Fukushima

Quote:
Just 873 people, or under 5 percent, of an original population of 17,613 have returned [to the town of Namie]. Many are scared — with some obvious justification — that their homes and surroundings are still unsafe. Most of the returnees are elderly. Only six children are enrolled at the gleaming new elementary school. This is not a place for young families.

Four-fifths of Namie’s geographical area is mountain and forest, impossible to decontaminate, still deemed unsafe to return. When it rains, the radioactive cesium in the mountains flows into rivers and underground water sources close to the town.

But many residents say the central government is being heavy handed in its attempts to convince people to return, failing to support residents’ efforts to build new communities in places like Nihonmatsu, and then ending compensation payments within a year of evacuation orders being lifted.

“We are upset. Everyone is upset,” said Sasaki, the former farmer.

In other towns around the nuclear plant, people have complained that arbitrarily decided compensation payouts — more for people deemed to have been in radiation-affected zones, far less for tsunami victims, nothing for people just a mile outside the zone most affected — have divided communities and caused resentment and friction.

"Bill finally recognizes Ainu as indigenous people of Japan"

Quote:
After more than a century of forced assimilation and discrimination that nearly blotted out their culture, the Ainu are finally to be recognized as indigenous under legislation to be submitted to the ordinary Diet session.

A draft bill was approved on Feb. 5 by a joint meeting of entities within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, including its Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Division.

While banning discrimination against the Ainu people, the bill also has provisions to establish new subsidies to promote tourism to the northernmost main island of Hokkaido where Ainu are from.
This is huge, and will make certain people very angry

Wonder if the success of Golden Kamuy played any role in changing public attitudes toward the Ainu? Young heroine Asirpa became the poster child for the British Museum's upcoming manga exhibition.

Right nationalist parties don't like indigenous people, and have made many attempts to sanitize history

Ainu, along the burakumin and Korean descendents are the "untouchables" of society.

But this kind of attitude, is not exclusive to just Japan

Good news.

By the way, Ainu and Poland have intriguing connection: Bronisław Piłsudski, who was a famous researcher of Ainu culture and brother of the most famous Polish XX century leader, Józef Piłsudski. His Polish/Ainu descendants still live in Japan.

That's a reason I look forward for Ainu themes in anime ^^

Japanese railway company starts testing 249mph bullet train speeds:

"This week, Japanese railway company JR East showed off its new Alfa-X, a high-speed
bullet train that is designed to achieve a top speed of 400kph, or 249mph, which would
make it the fastest commercial train in the world. In day-to-day operations, the train
would shuttle passengers at 360kph, or roughly 224mph.

On Friday, JR East will begin testing the Alfa-X, without passengers, on its railways.
According to Bloomberg, the 10-car train will make the trip "between the cities of Aomori
and Sendai at night" for the next three years during a testing phase. JR East hopes to use
the Alfa-X commercially by 2030. Japan News says the line will eventually be extended to
Sapporo."
