The legend of the mountain? Not exactly, I don't think it is stated directly since when it started, but I think it was less then 400 years ago considering the other events.

I wonder, I know they have eggs and the eggs aren't cheap and I know the MC gives out some recipes for food, but I can't remember if mayonnaise is included. Well, at least we know that the MC likes to eat lavishly and always treats his guests to lavish feasts that impresses.

Well I know there was once a stray thought concerning fried food but until now there wasn't any deep fried or fried food introduced to the masses. I think the reason for that would be the cost for making oil with the current technology.

I remember them not even having potatoes and the MC ordering one of his trusted retainers to venture through a few cities and buy the needed seeds. When they arrived back with the seeds and the tuberous he talked a bit about the potato and how good it was when made into food too the people that were present when those seeds and tuberous arrived.

She took her ships and went and conquered the kingdom of Eternal Winter.

Said Kingdom is also the main stronghold of the Church, and the first Kingdom they actually took over/conquered. As a note, she also captured and executed one the the 3 Bishops (position right below the Pope himself). She then made an agreement with Wolf Heart Kingdom, which is currently under attack and being conquered/under siege by the main Church forces, to ally against the Church.

Yeah, it might be that only the MC and the 5th princess are actually pro-witch, but all 4 of them are anti-church (2nd prince is currently being subtle about it, although there's hints that he's plotting against the Church too).

Yes, to both.

It's been sort of foreshadowed that some ages ago, humanity (witches and all) was defeated by demons (giants twice the size of humans who can command mutated beasts and can use magic), and that the church have secret records of those times and is thus currently preparing themselves for another invasion.

That fits nicely with my personal theory on the Church's actions both toward the various nations and to witches.

See, put in that perspective, I feel that the Church's actions make sense. See, they already know from their secret records that normal armies + witches won't work; it didn't last time after all. So, they've turned to a different trump card of sorts: Their holy stones. Since the demons use magic, holy stones should be able to nullify them just as well as they do against witches, but that nullification is indiscriminate, so they're completely non-compatible with witches. Thus, they need to choose which they're going with: witches or holy stones, and since witches have already proven useless before...

However, just holy stones aren't likely to be enough, since the demon are not only far physically superior to normal humans, but they are also likely to be accompanies by mutated beasts. In comes the Divine Punishment Army. These soldiers are superhuman, with strength and speed far beyond normal humans, not to mention they feel nothing, physically or emotionally, which makes them even more powerful as soldiers. Finally, not only are their superhuman abilities not affected by holy stones, but they themselves produce a magic nullification aura much like the holy stones, making them perfect to fight against demons and mutated beasts.

The problem is though, Divine Punishment Soldiers are very difficult to make: They require holy stones and a great deal of witch's blood to make (1 witch's blood is enough for 2 soldiers). Even then, there's a pretty hefty failure chance, where the soldier will die to the the treatment. Thus, to get as much Divine Punishment (really need a shorter name for that) Soldiers as possible, the Church needs to kill tons of witches. They've already set up huge numbers of nunneries to take in young woman, by taking in orphans or even buying them if necessary, so as to farm witches. Not only that, but they've spread their doctrine of witches being evil as much as possible, so that no one would sympathize with the slaughter of witches and to supplement their need for witch blood with the witches that their believers turn in. That also extends to their goal of world conquest, so that they can farm witches from as large a territory as possible, and to unit humanity to prepare for the inevitable demon invasion.

Pretty much I agree to all of it. But here it's where, that for me, things just don't add up if they are left just at that stage.

Now imagine that as a civilization you have just come out of a tough battle and many lives were lost. We don't know exactly what the relationship was exactly between the witches and normal people back then but we can speculate that at least after the war the witches were seen in a good light by the people at large.

Now then, lets say all of that happened and they fought tooth and nail alongside the witches not to be conquered, and as we know it, they succeeded even if they lost the war, and they knew that they didn't see the last of those monsters. What would they do at that point? Would you find it logical that the first decision and best would be to directly antagonize an ally that helped you fight those things to a "draw" or to consolidate and work together with that ally for a better plan?

Remember, the witches power were diverse and we know that at least those witches could manipulate the elements and that includes the earth so why would you forsake such versatility for some untested theory that if we get some witches blood and a completely new magic nullifying stone and infuse it into a man then we can get a type of soldier that could (and I say could, cause they have no freaking idea if those soldiers can turn the tide in their favor) help them in their future battle.

It's like having tanks, planes and submarines in world war 1 and after the end of it, if you would be Germany, you would say: well phuck this shit, we'll go ham and cannibalize all the steel from our entire army and try to build up something "better" before world war 2 starts. Unless someone knew for a fact that they can achieve results from the get go before the next war starts then I'm left doubting their sanity to pursue such an avenue.

I don't think they even had that "god stone" before that certain battle because if they had it then why wouldn't they use it then? So they had to first research that "god stone" (and let us say that this is plausible, you research that stone because you know your enemy is also using magic so you desire a counter measure to that) but then you would have too, from some unknown reason, bleed a witch dry of her blood, mix that blood with that stone and poor the result into the vein of a normal human soldier and do this for at least 30 times to prove to someone that this quaky theory works (remember, they say that when they started creating those soldier the chance for a soldier to survive all that and become a elite soldier was very, very small, and after a lot of trial and error and a lot of witch killings they could finally get better results when they knew "the best age" of the witch when she needs to be killed and her blood extracted)
Then after all of this, they had to start the journey to slowly cover up their history from the public, indoctrinate the people and afterwards antagonize the witches to get the results they need and do all this in 400 years and have enough of those elite soldiers to survive the upcoming war.

Now, unless a super genius that could have seen that far out into the future and have the ability to come up with that ridiculous theory and do that math on both the first proven option and the second insane theory and see that the insane one has more chances of success and do this at most 50 years after that battle then I don't see how this all can even make logical sense. In other words, they either went YOLLO or INSANE based on the facts we know and if we accept the theory that they completely abandoned and came up with a better solution that involves a plan of that magnitude in the time frame that the story gives us.

I do not know, but for me it sounds much more plausible that those things, after the war, they saw that they couldn't achieve an easy victory so they either made a deal with some greedy human bastards or they infiltrated the human ranks by themselves and spread the idea to kill witches and spread chaos in the kingdoms. Why I see that as a more plausible theory? Well the first thing is what I mentioned above and how insane it would seem if they went all out: Hey you know what? Phuck this tanks, airplanes and submarines, let's convince all the others that we need to destroy them all and from their steel let's build a nuclear bomb.......by the way? what the puck is an atom? . The second thing is the fact that I think it was mentioned that against those creatures the witches magic didn't work so well, so maybe those creatures already had something like the "god stone" (otherwise it would be just a war of heavy artillery against heavy artillery, it wouldn't have been pretty, but no one would think that they had very little chance to win it even after they lost because it would be all about luck, who hits who's heavy artillery first). And the third reason I think this is because how the elite soldiers are described themselves. The lack of emotion, I think, is a foreshadowing that at one point or another those elite soldiers will attack the normal human population.

The pope does indeed appear in a chapter. He is the one that oversees the "witch blood infusion ritual" and the chapter where we see him is from the perspective of someone else that is groomed to be the next pope. So this character goes to oversee a "witch blood infusion ritual" in the presence of the pope and they have a short discussion.
It is tough to say though what type of human the pope is because it's mostly a neutral exchange of words. Personally I think the current Pope to have lost his emotions (not in the elite soldier way because those soldiers do not have thoughts of their own) but it's hard to say why. My conjecture is that it's due to the large amounts of rituals and witch killings he had to supervise. The rituals aren't quick and they aren't painless and the soldiers are killed immediately on the spot if they deemed not to be able to succeed. The reason given for the "on the spot killing" is that they don't want to see the soldiers suffer before they ultimately die, but who knows, maybe they transform into something else, we can just speculate.

Do we know anything about the higher echelons of the church?
The upper echelons of the church are a mixed opinions and point of views. Some know that the witches power isn't from the devil while some don't, some are there just in pursuit of power while others think that they are doing "Gods work". But all of them agree that killing the witches and gathering elite soldiers while destroying the royal bloodlines too join all the kingdoms together under their rule is the necessary thing to do.
A couple of members are named and some of their intentions are made to some degree clear but unfortunately I am not that good with names so if Mechatrill would help us on that or someone else then I would give them my thanks.

Its plausible for the enemy to have infiltrated the ranks, raised themselves to the upper echelon and started all that shit up. In fact, I'd go with that theory.
