By the way, how is it exactly that you seem to know everything about this movie, from the quality of the soundtrack, to what they did or didn't show every ten minutes? I thought you weren't going to see it. |

Spoiler for potential film spoilers:
Agreed. From Emily Browning's version of "Sweet Dreams" (which opens the film), to the great remix of Bjork's "Army of Me" and the new version of Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit", there are some great musical selections throughout the film (I wasn't a big fan of the adaptation of the Pixies seminal "Where is My Mind?" that pops up several times throughout the film). The BGM is also very good, though extremely cliche. |

The 4 Cast of Sucker Punch Japan Dub. 2. Seriously, the director who brought us Dawn Of the Dead remake, then 300, Watchmen, last year's Legend of Guardians and now this?! BULLSHIT!! I mean i haven't even watched it, really until the DVD release later this year but after i've read those negative comments & take their opinions seriously especially movie reviews. |

Just saw it.
Not sure what to say. Maybe the bad things I'd heard here and elsewhere lowered my expectations and therefore allowed the movie to more easily clear the hurdle. I really wasn't disappointed. I wasn't expecting a great plot with which to begin; when I saw the trailer, I expected great visuals, ridiculous action, and girls with guns. I got all three things. I do agree, though, that the PG-13 rating probably harms this movie. Not that I am a big fan of gore (I am very much not), but come on. The premise of that movie nearly demands that you push some boundaries. Even some harsher language! Jena Malone (Rocket) was my favorite girl. Something about the short blonde hair with the headband or bandanna just did it for me. And the Nazi Zombies are taking over. They're everywhere now. First it was that Scandanavian movie, then CoD:WaW (I *think* this came after the movie), then it's this... next is Captain America, though from the trailer I guess they're actually devils and not zombies... but still. More inhuman Nazis. EDIT: Okay, ya know what? Forgot something. The song that's in all the trailers wasn't in the film, I don't think. That disappointed me. I haven't heard the whole song, but whatever little clip of it is in every trailer sounded really cool. It's the song that plays when the full-length trailer gets to Baby Doll's dreams and basically runs for the rest of the trailer.

I saw the movie, hated it, and what follows is my reactionary rant. It's long. You've been warned. TL;DR is handled in my next paragraph.
Joking or not, you're going to be sorely disappointed. It's an awful movie. There's no plot to speak of, no characterization, poor writing, cartoony CGI, shoddy (or at least poorly designed) camera work...it's just a big mess. The dialogue is ripped almost verbatim from the cliche handbook ("I can't let you do that." "but I have to" "okay I'll let you but if things go bad we have to stop" "okay" "things are bad we have to stop" "no I must keep going" "well then I have to too so that you don't get hurt"). The acting wasn't bad, honestly; the actors simply weren't given anything to work with. Because of that, you feel absolutely no attachment to the characters. When they die, it's completely out of left field (another bad sign), but you just don't care! They're just faces, not people. The action scenes that were supposed to be so cool just didn't interest me in the slightest. Now, think about this. I'm in an anime forum. I like giant robots and big guns and crazy amounts of action and all that. And yet...this movie did nothing for me. The justification for the action parts is that the girl is dancing so well for the sleazy guys that they're completely entranced. It's "everything a guy could want" or something like that, and we're shown how that might play out by having hot girls fight robot zombie Nazis. But having that as your rationale means that you're literally just dropped into the scenes and the girls are just inexplicably awesome all the time. They have guns and they can jump super high and they know martial arts and it's all just way too much with little more explanation than "durr guys like this rite?" No, we don't, not when you present it to us like we're losers who'll eat it up, no questions asked! Furthermore, those scenes felt like they happened way too fast. The girls get dropped into their target location, there's a blurry mess of action, and then they're done. In the WW2 fantasy, the camera shaking is so bad you can barely make out what's happening. In the futuristic robot one, the 300-style speedups and slowdowns were so extreme that you felt no connection to what was going on. And I don't even remember much about the dragon fantasy. They go in, shoot some guys, kill a baby dragon, and run from an adult dragon. Okay...? Spoiler for plot spoiler:
I don't understand what Snyder was going for, to be honest. I THINK he had some story he wanted to tell or some message he wanted to get across or SOMETHING, but he had no idea how to do it, so he threw in steampunk Nazis and dragons and machine gun samurai and called it good. Problem is, that sets up the target audience for some severe mood whiplash. Let's say you go for the action scenes, because schoolgirls shooting at dragons with guns are totally your cup of tea. So you get to those parts and you get all into it...and suddenly it cuts back to those same girls being abused and mistreated and used as sex objects and such. What are you supposed to feel? Does Synder think guys are into that too? What's the deal? You want an action movie? Make an action movie. You want a drama or a tragedy? Make that instead. But don't cross the streams unless you can do it well! Synder is trying to write his own Inception (a darn good movie), and he has no idea how to do it. Whew. I hated the movie, and I want my ten bucks back. Does it show? Fact.

Also, in regards to the comments made earlier about the first few minutes being like a music video... I agree; and I think it isn't necessarily bad. Maybe because I had read the comments here before I saw the movie this afternoon and had resigned myself to it, but I kinda liked the way the first few minutes was done, stylistically.
I do agree, though, that this movie would've been very interesting had it been done as a series of music videos, a la Interstella 5555.

Consensus of this thread: negative
Rotten Tomatoes: 20% Guess I'll turn off my brain for this one and get a case of beer and peanuts to go through. Babydoll's "absolute territory" is a consolation, though. Otherwise I think I'll pick up HSOD for a change. Or better yet... Madoka.

Well, its official, Sucker Punch is a bust in America. With only 19 million in its opening weekend (losing out to the annoying, yet not bad, Wimpy Kid sequel), Sucker Punch is more than likely a flop in America (the upcoming weekend is simply filled with new films, with 3 wide-releases and a score of other limited releases, so it seems a little unbelievable that Sucker Punch will even be able to retain a spot in the Top 10). So, all that is left is the hope that a foreign market will buy into the film, otherwise this will be a certified flop (which really doesn't mean anything considering that box office is not an indicator of quality, but it is an indicator of actor/director future viability (I have to question just how much leeway Snyder will have with the upcoming Superman: Man of Steel, considering his past 3 films now have been failures at the boxoffice)).
It’s not surprising that Sucker Punch couldn’t find an audience (with its rough storyline, bleak atmosphere, partial mind-fuck status (though debatably uninteresting), and harsh critique of the sexualization of women in geek culture), hell I’m not even sure if I like the film (what with its shoddy directing at times and extremely bad dialogue), but I do think Sucker Punch will undoubtedly be one of those films that will gain some amount of popularity as time goes by, even if it is as a cult status… Last edited by james0246; 2011-03-28 at 10:16. |

If it flops in the box office it means more people disliked it than liked it, that's all
Woooow spill.com harshly gave this movie a "f*** you" rating.. hearing them rear this movie a several hundred holes. I agree on what they said here and there but they seem to have had a bug up their buts when reviewing it. Even I belive its a rental..not a "f*** you"... the dbz movie, the chun lee movie are "fuck you" ratings in their scale but they gave those two "some ol bull ****" rating... And how is it soo hard to belive someone can judge a movie even not seein the full movie? I saw enough clips, heard enough and read enough spoilers of this movie to give it my rating and I would give it a 5/10 and yes I thought the music was annoying, not my taste so dont't qq about that. I don't qq that someone likes rap. I'll watch the movie someday but my opinion will still stay the same that's for sure.
