....Wait, you want to identify an anime where two protagonists pilots in mech cockpit, fighting each other in space? With face cut-ins of both?
Even if you limit that to post-2000 shows, we're talking about dozens of shows that could fit that description. That's a standard Sunrise-style depiction of pretty much every mech battle anime out there. You're probably gonna need to tell us a bit more description than the most generic one.

Believe me, I would if I could. But an eleven-year-old on a complete and total sugar high does't remember that much, epecially since I only saw the last 10 minutes or so. XP
I'm pretty sure that if I saw it again, I'd recognize it--I'm just trying to narrow it down a bit. No big problem if you can't help. |

Check out Gundam Wing and see if it fits the description. There wasn't much anime being shown on television at that time, and Gundam Wing was one of the more popular (the others being Sailor Moon and Dragonball Z, which aren't mech-based series).

I think I'll take a shot in the dark. Maybe Tekkaman Blade, or more specifically, it was the english dubbed version of it called Teknoman that you saw. For one, it has a lot of space battles. Two, it was still shown around the time period you mention (around 2001, I believe I still saw reruns IIRC). Three, Blade's transformation scene involves him getting into a robot that's a very tight fit. Only discrepancy is that they don't fight in individual ships, but sugar induced high might be the cause of it. Blade does ride on top of 'ship', instead of inside it. And the fight you have mentioned might have him fighting one of his nemesis. Of course, second guess would be indeed Gundam Wing. Heero pilots Wing in bird mode a lot of times, though there isn't any other plane type of rivals that he'd fight. Third guess would be Robotech. But has that been broadcasted in TV past the 80's? I dunno.

Guess it's your lucky day I just randomly downloaded this very pack from share last night (I tend to like the lucky dip approach to finding new cg packs heh).
