Really.... many people who use forums - like the idea that they can reflect and compose their posts. IRC chat is inherently a bit too limited, rather like old-school-tweets. I've used IRC for 20ish years but it does have its limitations.

This is true. The most active IRC channel I'm in only has 50 members in it but 75% of them talk at least once a day so it's a very active channel. I've never understood "idling" in a channel you never talk in, what's the point? I understand idling in a channel you're an active member of so you can start joining in once a discussion gets started up.
