Didn't the anime come first?

Evangelion is enjoyable as long as you don't take it too seriously.

Why? I feel the people who appreciate it the least are the ones who can't see the series on a more serious level.

NGE is like an abstract painting. Some see the meaning of life in it, others just random colors and shapeless objects.

Because (at least to me), it's more the kinda of anime that you sit back and just watch rather than try to figure out what the creator was smoking at the time.

^ You are mistaking K-On with NGE. For many this anime is not even meta-modern but anti-escapism.

The anime and manga are separate continuities; the tv show wasn't an adaptation.

Because Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is the laziest son of a bitch in existence since Kentaro Miura.

The manga has gone years without a single chapter. After roughly around chapter 80, we had two years without a single release. Then chapters 81-84 were released in a few months earlier this year and then the series went on hiatus yet again. Who knows when it'll continue and especially finish. Not till after the Rebuild moves are done, I bet.

So, Eva experts, what did Gendo actually say?

That's not a bad guess. Gendo has always thought of people in terms of what use they are to him.

Indeed. The Japanese line is "Honto ni..." so if you ask me the "I truly..." is already there, it's just a matter of what kind of sentiment Gendo felt towards Ritsuko. Some people seem to believe it was "I truly loved you." but that's just too easy and I doubt Gendo would ever say that to a woman other than Yui, even as a lie. So "I truly needed you." sounds the most likely to me, as it's something that's very feasible that Gendo might've felt towards Ritsuko, since as you said he seemed to gauge people's worth based on how useful they were to his objective, but still something Ritsuko herself would consider a lie due to his cold disposition and, well, the fact that he was about to put a bullet through her fucking head. >_>

Since Gendo slept with Ritsuko's mom Naoko before for the same purpose-ensuring her cooperation in running/creating the Magi system-I doubt he really "loved" her, since he has a very strong attachment to Yui (he's willing to end the world for her xD). It is most likely something like "I truly needed you", or maybe "I truly trusted you", or even "I truly am sorry." (I don't know if the last one is possible in Japanese).
He's less of sociopath at this point, probably.

Some people treat Neon Genesis Evangelion as the second coming of Jesus while others believe it to be the 9,001st reiteration of trash. I'm inclined to say that it's somewhere in the middle because the sympathy I had for the characters was cancelled out by the questionable story direction. More thoughts below...

I don't know if this is the right thread for this but can anyone tell me which version of evangelion I should watch? Or in which order I should watch the different adaptions? I mean, it's pretty confusing because I never watched it before and it has so many adaptions.I would appreciate it if anybody could help me with this.
