The instruction of the game reminds me about DOS game Shanghai.
The anime makes several references to majong history. The story of Majong was said to be played by ancient soldiers for gambling. They used the captured sparrows as bets. Majong was the paper poker game, later became dominoes game. The sparrows were made into kabob. Thus, the anime has the yakitori humor. Mahjong means sparrow/suzume. It is pronounced in Chinese local dialect, and Japanese word retains the pronunciation.

That was fun: Haneru's made an appearance now, and she does what I used to do if I got wrecked in any online game

It's an interesting show of how privacy isn't really what it used to be now, since Haneru is shown as being able to work out where Riche is based on a screen name and some social media posts. The same tricks led me to work out the spots where Pon no Michi's main locations are: the parlour is inspired by Saga Cafe, but it's located down National Route 2.

For an episode sponsored by Mahjong Soul, it was pretty good. It was actually fun to see the girls play a game I've played. Nashiko really fucking sucks at mahjong, doesn't she? I've rarely seen anyone lose this hard.

I didn't get a good enough look at the screens to tell which ranks Riche and Emi are. The others were novices, obviously.

Emi is kind of scary. She's so butthurt someone beat her at MS that she doxxed Riche and is heading to the parlor to get her revenge. She didn't even lose by much, but I guess what really irked her is that Riche completely saw through her game. Nashiko was right to be scared of playing online...

I was surprised Nashiko acted as the voice of reason in regards to Haneru. I mean, tracking down someone who beat you online IS a pretty crazy thing to do. She could have been bad news.

Anyway, barbecue this time. I guess we're kind of going to alternate between mahjong and slice of life.

This is what makes the show great. The mahjong is a part of life, and it's naturally woven into the story.

Haneru is clearly the indoor type given her poor endurance. And yet at the end of the day, she was the one who went to sleep the latest thanks to mahjong energy. Pretty sure Nashiko's final hand was a yakuman. Too bad she doesn't remember.

I'm happy Haneru won the gold mahjong set. She's clearly the one who wanted it the most, and because of its monetary value.

Kaiji made a cameo appearance in Nashiko's dream and was mentioned by Izumi later in the episode.
