Oooku: The Inner Chambers [Netflix]
Hugely respected shoujo manga Oooku is being adapted by Netfflix. Studio is Deen, director is Noriyuki Abe (resume longer than your arm).
Tezuka Grand Prize: 2009 Shogakukan Manga Award for Shoujo: 2011 Manga Taisho Grand Prize: 2022 Let me also note that Samu named it as his "best manga that will never get an anime" in a 2022 LiA podcast. Guess the joke's on him...

I'm both surprised by this as it feels like a live action historic drama for the most part but at the same time you can only properly adapt this through an anime as it covers the entire Edo period with lots of characters ageing and hiring voice actors to voice a single character in all stages of his or her life is a lot cheaper and easier than hiring different actors to achieve the same result.
It's perfect for Netflix but I really don't like binge releases for anime as it kills discussions. I actually added it my plan to read list because this podcast. I only finished reading it two weeks ago.

My question:
Dos this mean that DEEN has a decent reputation now? Granted, between being a shoujo manga (not that this is a bad thing!) and being in Netflix jai, it will probably fly under the radar anyways, but it's always good to have an adaptation be done by a good studio. Not sure if DEEN's reputation has improved or not.

I don’t feel like DEEN’s rep has changed much one way or the other. And I don’t think that preview especially screams “high end”. But it has a good director so I suspect it will be fine.
Deen did Shouwa Genroku of course, but they’ve always done the odd series that blows everything else in their catalog out of the water for production values. They only come once every few years and they don’t seem to be predictive of any general change, in my experience.

DEEN has always been studio that 'honest' about their resources, for me.
If their resources is bad, it will be poor as well (Nanatsu no Taizai S3). If their resources is good, they are reliable (Konosoba, Ueki, Sakamoto, Higurashi). So ...

I'm actually iffy about how the premise. Instead of showing the power of women in the Edo period as it is, they just introduced an illness that wiped out a lot of males, thus forcing Japanese society to change into a matriarchal one.

Don't worry, it's just my personal view on it. I do acknowledge the positive reception towards the source, it's just that it feels off to me. (It being promoted by Netflix doesn't help either.)

It's on Netflix, a bit surprised that the first episode was movie length and covered the entire prologue. Anyway it's a faithful adaptation, not much to complain about it except maybe I wish the animation was a bit better at times.

Finished. 8-9/10. Hope there's another installment.
I found Matsui Eriko's performance as Tokugawa Iemitsu an impressive surprise. I see that she has been in many shows, but most of them I have never watched. I thought she did an excellent job portraying Iemitsu's growth over the story. Miyano Mamoru was his usual smooth self.

Everyone is just going to forget about this show, I guess, now that weekly episodes for the other shows are a thing. I used to dislike Netflix's practice of waiting for a show to finish in Japan before releasing it in one lump. Pushed me to fansubs for shows I wanted to follow. Now we have an example of a show designed to be released all-at-once, and it gets lost in the hubbub of weekly episodes.
