Alicia frowned softly, something had happened, she just knew it. "Linith..?"
"Yes?" Her familiar looked at her, though she seemed to be distracted at the time. "Lady Alicia?"
"You feel that?" It was a terrible pulse of magic, one that chilled her to the bones, and she wasn't even that strong, magically, compared to the rest of the people in her penthouse. She couldn't imagine how it was for Linith.
The two went back to what they had been doing before, Linith cleaning up while Alicia did some tests on various things that were laying around. She looked at the Jewel Seeds before shaking her head. The last thing she wanted to do was experiment on them without double-checking to make sure that they were sealed properly.
The two of them suddenly stiffened as they heard the door get kicked in and Arf yelling. The two were in the living room a moment later and Alicia gasped as she saw Fate's hands and arms. There were deep burns, some gouging, and even blood. "Fate!" She gasped and went to her daughter, taking her from Arf. "What happened?"
"I'm sorry, mother... I just wanted to get the Jewel Seed."
"Why would you risk yourself like that?!" Alicia yelled, worry written all over her face as Linith moved them towards the bedroom. After putting Fate on the bed, Alicia grew more worried as Fate grimaced from that. "Linith..."
The catgirl nodded and gently, carefully, took Fate's clothing off, both women gasped and stared wide-eyed at the series of burns across Fate's upper body.
"Get the bandages, I'll see about healing her." Linith said softly as Alicia got up and went to the bathroom where they kept the bandages. As she worked some healing magic, mostly to stop any sort of bleeding and lessen the pain, Linith sighed as Fate looked away, out of shame. "What's wrong, Fate?"
"I upset mother... I just wanted that Jewel Seed before that other girl got it."
"So you decided you wanted to know what it felt like to become fried chicken?!" Linith snapped at her, getting her to cringe and turn away slightly. Sighing, Linith took a deep breath. "Fate, I'm sorry, but, we're not used to seeing you so badly hurt. It scares us. What if Arf hadn't been there? What if the other girl decided to attack you while you were hurt?" When she didn't respond, Linith ran a hand through her hair, before coaxing her to laying on her back again. "We don't want to lose you, Fate. Your mother would be very sad if you died."
Fate's eyes started to burn with tears as she hiccuped a few times, her breath coming in shuddering gasps, before she rolled over and clung to Linith. "I...I'm sorry!" She started crying, tears falling down her face as Linith, not stopping the healing spell, patted her on the head. She would have rubbed Fate's back, but there were burns there too. Just what had happened out there?
"I'm so so-sorry!" Fate sobbed into Linith's lap. "The other girl got one earlier today and then when the second one popped up, I really wanted to get it and..." She broke down, unable to form words at that time.
Alicia came back at that time and gently sat down on the bed, taking out some burn ointment and started to rub it on her daughter's back and arms. Neither woman said anything as Fate kept crying.
"Feel better?" Linith asked after Fate calmed down. The girl nodded against her lap. "Good... Fate, it's a good thing that you want to get these Lost Logia so badly, but..."
"I don't want you to do something that will get you hurt." Alicia finished for Linith as she continued to rub the lotion onto Fate's body. The two sat Fate up, since the burns were only on her upper body, and applied the lotion to her front. "You're my precious girl, if you died, I wouldn't know what to do with myself."
"I'm sorry." Fate sniffled softly and blinked as Linith wiped her face with a paper towel. The catgirl didn't say anything, thankfully, but Fate still felt bad that she had made both her mother and Linith worry about her.
At times, Linith felt like a mother to Fate, just like Alicia was.
It made her feel warm and happy.
But, she always felt a deep desire to do all that she could to prove herself worthy of the love that both of them and Arf gave to her. And that was why she did such dangerous and stupid stunts.
Yeah, it's nice to see Fate get some care rather than a whip Things'll get really interesting when the Bureau shows up, cuz it's not like Alicia is trying to tear a hole in the fabric of space time. She could just surrender under the condition that Precia gets medical treatment.
Alicia frowned softly, something had happened, she just knew it. "Linith..?"

Spoiler for More of Nanoha's Adventures in space!:
“Captain, the ship is taking major damage, our shields are down. We’re not going to last very long now.”
“Don’t worry about those shields; it won’t matter soon when I take down this ship.”
“Just be careful, and when you’re done get back on this ship immediately. I don’t want to see you engaging that other ship.”
“If that other ship gets to close then no promises Lindy-san.”
“Randy, get us out of here, now.”
“Yes, captain!”
~…~
Chrono sighed. What did it always have to end up like this? Why were they always put in the worse situations? They were stuck in a town that had a famous TSAB research facility near it. Which meant a ton of troops were in and near the town to protect that facility. Knowing the track record of a certain mage in the Asura’s crew, they would be discovered soon.
Being a freedom fighter in a world ruled by an oppressive government was stressful.
“Lighten up Chrono! It’s not all bad” Amy said.
“It’s all bad, Amy. There’s nothing good that came out of this at all” Chrono replied as he watched the ship being repaired.
“There is, we can free some of the test subjects. That would be something to celebrate about, and would definitely get Graham mad.”
Chrono stared at Amy for a moment. “While that sounds great, the chances of us pulling that off are slim. They have more men, more weapons, and a top notch security system. For us to have any chance to do that at all would be to have a map of the place and somebody that knows the inner workings of the lab. Not to mention a working ship.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised if someone who had all those things came to our doorstep, we have that kind of luck.”
~…~
Elsewhere, inside the TSAB’s number one research facility, The Cell, there was a rather big commotion. Scientist scrambling to escape just as the doors closed and locked themselves. They banged on the doors in frustration. “We’re trapped!” they shouted. All but one person tried to escape.
An old man, his hair was completely grey, wrinkles on his face. Tiredly he took off his glasses and began wiping them with a cloth. “Don’t bother; no matter how hard you hit it, it won’t open. Nor will begging it help” he stated with a calmness that didn’t suit the situation one bit.
They ignored him and continued. With a sigh he put his glasses back on. “I told him it was a bad idea. A monster can only make more monsters…”

"Fate-chan, it was only three drones!” Nanoha whined. “They won’t even miss them!”
The blonde beside her only sighed. “We can’t be caught, and if you go around destroying gadget drones then we will. I don’t think you want to go to jail, Nanoha.”
“I know, I know” Nanoha replied dismissively.
“Yet that doesn’t seem to change anything. So what’s your reason for destroying them, this time?”
“They looked at me funny.”
Fate couldn’t help but smile. “Come on Nanoha, let’s just go get these groceries back to the ship” she said as she grabbed the brown paper bag and began walking away. Nanoha quickly did the same.
“Do you think Lindy-san will let us attack The Cell? I just can’t stop thinking about what they may be doing in there. Everything created in there becomes a pain in our butt later” Nanoha asked in a low whisper.
“It’s really dangerous, though. I’m certain that Chrono-nii-san will say no. I don’t think it’s a good idea at all.”
Nanoha pouted. Her expression quickly changed when she saw a group of TSAB soldiers equipped with the latest barrier armor and a standard device rushed past them, heading towards The Cell. “They look like they’re in a hurry” Nanoha said as she stopped and stared at them for a moment.
“I know what you’re thinking, and I don’t think it’s a good idea. What if they notice us?” Fate replied as she stopped and stood beside Nanoha.
“They won’t, it looks like they’re in too much of a rush. Must be an emergency, come on!” Nanoha immediately ran after them. Fate quickly followed her.
The duo followed the soldiers all the way to the facility; they quickly hid behind trees when the soldiers were at the front gates.
“Are they locked out?” Fate whispered as she continued to watch as they kept swiping their cards on the panel.
“Let’s go investigate, Fate-chan.”
“
Wait a minute, Nanoha. I think we should go back to the ship and figure out what to do there. They won’t be going anywhere for awhile.”
Nanoha turned her head back to guards to find them still trying to get in. “Alright, Fate-chan let’s go back.”
~…~
“This seems like a good opportunity for us. It’s also possible that it’s a trap” Chrono stated as he thought about this new information.
“I don’t think so. The automatic defense system has sent out multiple emergency messages and is in lockdown. The messages are being sent to all TSAB ships near here and to headquarters too. What’s really strange is that it’s a code white” Amy replied as she continued to type on the translucent screens.
“Code white?” Nanoha repeated confused.
“It means something really bad happened and the only way to fix it is completely destroy the base and the area surrounding it” Chrono explained. “It looks like we got lucky, really lucky.”
Nanoha beamed. “Does that mean..?”
“That’s right, prepare for a raid.”
“Er…I don’t want to spoil the mood but how are we going to pull this off? We don’t have a working ship for a quick getaway and there’s another working battleship on the planet, probably close by. Not to mention whatever caused the code white in the first place” Fate said.
“You don’t have to worry Fate! Because I have some good news!” a new voice shouted cheerfully. They all turned their heads to a small orange puppy that had entered the room.
“Arf, what is it?” Chrono asked as Fate walked over and petted her.
“Remember the ship that Nanoha destroyed?” Arf asked as they all nodded. “I found where it landed. It’s completely abandoned, there’s still some good parts left in it. I thought maybe we could swipe some parts.”
“That is good news; it’s been hard finding parts in town. If we get lucky and work hard I think the ship will be up and flying again in at least two days” Amy replied.
Chrono nodded thoughtfully. “Okay, we can wait a couple of days until the ship is fixed. That would give us enough time to figure out what happened.”
~…~
Suddenly the steel door opened, the scientists all looked up warily. “Ooh looks like a party, and I wasn’t invited! That makes me very upset. Now what should I do to make myself feel better? Maybe…you have an idea, Dr. Narud?” the figure asked as he pointed to the old man with the glasses that sat on top of a desk.
“How about you just get on with what you came here to do, instead of babbling?” Dr. Narud replied in calm voice that didn’t suit the situation he was in at all.
“Boring! I guess that just comes with old age doesn’t it? Luckily I’ll never get old, so I won’t have to worry about becoming like you!” he grinned as he scanned the room. “Now I have a fun idea, how about we play hide and go die? I’ll give you….however long I feel like for you to hide and if I find you, bad things happen! You better start running now!” With that they all rushed out the door, all but Dr. Narud. “Not up for a little game, old man?”
"I’m a bit old for things like that aren’t I? If you want to you can go ahead and kill me.”
The figure frowned. “Calm down, I’m not going to kill you, what sort of son would I be if I did that? No, I have other plans for you. But first, you should come with me; I’m going to let those trapped little mice to call some reinforcements.”
~…~
“Nanoha!” Fate called. The brunette ignored her and continued walking towards The Cell. “We shouldn’t be doing this.”
“You heard that message too, Fate-chan! If we wait any longer people are going to die. He sounded desperate” Nanoha replied as she continued to walk through the town. “If we don’t help them right now they might die, and you know I can’t let people die if I know I could save them.”
Fate smiled slightly, that was definitely like Nanoha. “Alright, let’s go.”

Spoiler for 'Ready, Sette, Go!' Part Two:
Chapter Two:
Upon hearing the stirring of activity in the rooms upstairs, I briefly considered my options.
Most likely, one or more of the inhabitants of the house would soon be coming down the stairs. Probability would suggest that one of my sisters would be the most likely candidate for first arrival, based simply on the fact that they made up the majority of the household population. Were that the case, I would likely have no problems in pursuit of my next objective.
However, a risk had emerged. This structure was also the home of Genya Nakajima (Rank Major, Post Batallion 108, as of last update to his public personell records, has refused three offered promotions in order to remain in command of a criminal investigation unit), and the occasional dwelling of his adopted daughters Ginga (Type Zero Cyborg, A rank mage) and Subaru (Type Zero Cyborg, AA rank mage, extremely loud) Nakajima. The latter two could be extremely dangerous should they perceive me as a threat, while the former was a man of advancing years and could potentially have serious health problems that could be exacerbated by the surprise of seeing me.
It occurred to me, then, that it would perhaps have been prudent to call and send word that I would arriving, and that in the long run it would have been best to use my one gratis prison communique' to do this rather than consult the Doctor. I filed this information away in preparation for the next time I was incarcerated for several years.
Considering the situation, it would be wise to prepare some sort of contingency plan. A peace offering, perhaps, that would, when combined with my earlier consideration, prove that I was absolutely no threat to the denizens of the house.
Ten minutes later, I stared at the strange black thing in the frying pan and nodded. It did not resemble closely the image in the cookbook I had unearthed, but all the ingredients had been used and it should have the same basic structure. Yes, this should serve.
"Ugh, what smells like somebody died...?" said a new voice, as the first arrival entered the kitchen. Ah. Nove. Then my peace offering had been unecessary. Still, better to prepare a weapon and not need it than need it and not prepare it. Nove could occasionally be hostile even to her allies, so it might still be of some use. Further, her actions indicated fatigue; she was rubbing her eyes, her hair was dishevelled, and her footsteps were unsteady. Yes, perhaps I should make the offer just in case her state had left her in a bad mood.
"Good morning, Nove. I have gathered ingredients and constructed pancakes." I said. Then, upon considering the pan in my hands, I added "Or, at this point, pancake. It is nutritious and possibly edible."
"Eh? Thanks, Sette, but before I do anything else I need some coffee." Nove said, beginning to root around through the refrigerator. "Ugh, are we out of cream again? How many times I gotta tell Wendi, if she uses up the last of something, put it on the grocery list?"
"I do not know how many times you gotta tell her." I said.
"Heh. Well, I'm pretty sure we're up to a billion and counting." Nove said, her head still in the refrigerator. "Sette, could you get under the counter and get out the coffeepot? We should make some before the others..."
At this point, Nove stopped in mid-sentence and pulled her head out of the cooling appliance to stare at me. She blinked several times (dry eyes again? Perhaps a version of pink eye that only targeted cyborgs. I should be cautious). She rubbed her eyes, as if to be certain they were still working, and continued to stare at me.
I stared back.
She continued staring.
I offered her the coffeepot. "Here." I said.
"Um... thanks..." She said, her tone indicating some level of emotional distress. "Um... Sette… just out of curiousity, would I happen to be still asleep?"
"No."
"You sure? 'Cause right this moment, I'm thinking that I see you. And that would be pretty good indication this is a dream."
"I don't think I am a dream." I said. "Though if I was a dream, would I know I was a dream?" This was question worthy of consideration, and I resolved to research the matter later. If I was a dream, I should probably know about it.
Nove reached forward tentatively, and patted me on the shoulder a few times. She then poked my chest. She then pinched my cheeks.
"Please don't do that." I said, after this continued for nearly a full minute.
"S-sorry… just making sure." Nove said. "Um… imouto-chan, not to put this the wrong way, but… well… why are you here?"
"I am no longer incarcerated." I said.
"Yeah, I was able to guess that based on the fact that you're in the room… what I meant is more along the lines… y'know, why are you here, in this house? It's just that nobody let you in, so it sorta seems like you broke in."
"I did not wish to wake anyone. This way was more considerate." I said firmly. It was true, after all.
"... suuuuuuuure. That still doesn't explain why you came here at night and committed great violence against some defenseless pancakes."
"Ah. Upon my parole, I determined I had several needs. The primary need was to determine my mission objective upon leaving the prison, to guide my future integration into society and prevent a loss of overall efficiency. The secondary need was a place to live."
"… your priorities haven't changed, I see." Nove said, with an expression that confused me. It seemed to have elements of both amusement and exasperation, which made little sense to me. "But if you just needed some place to crash, wouldn't the Saint Church have made more sense? Some of our sisters are there, too, and well… not that I'm sure dad wouldn't be happy to have you, but they do have a lot more space…"
"Ah. Well…" I began, hesitating slightly. How to put this delicately? "That is related to my first need. I required a command unit, one of my older sisters, to provide me with a mission, an overriding goal. And… there are only two of them who were not incarcerated with me, and given the choice between Cinque-nee-sama or… or Sein-nee-sama…"
Nove clasped her hand on my shoulder, her expression sympathetic. "You don't even have to finish that sentence." Nove said firmly. "You made the only decision anyone sane could make."
"Yes, I thought so." I agreed, glad that Nove could understand. I respected Sein-nee-sama in many ways, but in many other ways I found her... difficult. Particularly when bathing, it was best to make absolutely certain that she was nowhere in the vicinity. Her IS made this difficult, but it was worth the effort.
"But still, you probably should have called first, y'know?" Nove said. "I mean, I'm glad to see you, but not everyone here would be."
"Yes, I realized that belatedly. This is why I have constructed a pancake, as an offering of peace." I said, once again offering her my first completed creation. The first of many, if she would allow me to resume my efforts.
"... ... ... ... ... yeah." Nove said. "Look, follow me, okay? I'm sure you're welcome to stay here, but we'll need to sort some things out."
I followed my sister out of the kitchen and back into the living room, where she said, "Okay, I'm going to go take care of this situation for ya. You just sit in here until I come get you." She then gestured to the chair I had spent most of the night in, indicating I sit in it.
"Yes, I am capable of doing that." I said, knowing for a fact that I was able to perform to her expectations in this matter. I could, if necessary, remain seated in the chair in question for several hours without a noticable degredation of my capabilities.
"Now, our sisters will be happy to see you, but Ginga is staying over the night, and if she spots you before someone explains the situation, it could be trouble. So I need you to stay here until I bring everyone down to see you, all right?" Nove said, leaving me in the living room to head back upstairs.
It was a very good plan, in theory. Unfortunately, its effectiveness was diminished somewhat by the fact that Ginga Nakajima (Type Zero combat cyborg, Mage Rank A) had actually descended from the top floor and entered the kitchen to prepare her breakfast while Nove had been guiding me to the living room. And so when Nove went back upstairs, Sergeant Nakajima (Like her father, she had turned down several offered promotions in order to remain a field investigator) entered the room I was sitting in to determine whom she had heard speaking. Or I assume this to be the case, mind-reading is not within my capabilities.
Ginga Nakajima stared at me for some time. I got the impression that, unlike Nove, she was not doing so out of only disbelief.
"Hello." I said.
"Blitz Caliber!" She snapped, her Mage Device glowing brilliantly to clothe her in a Barrier Jacket... and importantly to my case, arm her.
This was a problem. My Inherent Equipment had not been returned to me after my release, for obvious reasons, and without my Boomerang Blades my IS was largely useless as well. I was more than capable of defending myself against most common threats, but Ginga was not only a Mage, but a Cyborg as well. Attempts to battle her without my weaponry would most likely result in me being quite severely beaten and ejected from the household.
"I don't know how you got out of prison, or how you got in here..." Ginga said, "But if you think I'll let you hurt even one member of my family, you've got another thing coming!" With only that warning, she charged, light gleaming around her Revolver Knuckle as the mechanisms spun rapidly, the weapon clearly poised to put me through a wall. I took the only defense I possibly could.
I raised both hands and said, "I surrender."
"Wh-ULF!" Ginga said. Evidently such an end to the 'encounter' had caught her somewhat off-guard, because she startled visibly... and, considering that she was moving at a considerable speed while on rollerblades, fell, skidding face-first along the floor until her momentum bled off. "Ooooowwwwwww..." She said, face still firmly in the floor.
"... ... would you like a pancake?" I asked, not certain what else to say. "There is only one, because Nove would not let me finish, but it is potentially good."
Without removing her face from the floor, Ginga said, "Er... I realize I'm stretching here, but is there any chance this is a dream? Because I did just wake up, and this whole situation is awfully surreal..."
"I do not think so. At least, the odds that both you and Nove are dreaming the same thing would be quite unlikely." I offered. "Although I suppose I could be dreaming, but I did not fall asleep so that is doubtful."
"What?!" Came a familiar shriek from upstairs, halting our brief conversation there. "SetteSetteSetteSetteSette!" Came Wendi's delighted squeals as she leapt... literally... down the stairs, stormed into the room, and wrapped me in a hug quite against my will. "Sette! It is you! Oooooh, imouto-chan, it's so good to see you again! It's been way, way too long, you never call, you never write, it's been ages! Nove just told me, she's waking up Cinque-nee and Dieci-nee right now, we're all going to sit down and have breakfast together like a family so welcome back!"
"Hello." I said, with a certain amount of difficulty. My lungs were having problems acquiring enough oxygen.
"Ah, I've missed that blank, understated expression of yours!" Wendi said in satisfaction. "... Ginga, what are you doing? Geez, playing on the floor when we have guests? What are you, five?"
"Are we sure this isn't a dream? Because I'd like it to be." Ginga said.
Spoiler for Author's Note:
This chapter was meant to be longer, but that was just such a good cut-off point I couldn't resist. This fic might end up being like, ten shorter chapters instead of five longish ones. Not sure how I want to play this out. Depends on how much story I can fit into the next few.
Oh, and don't expect the next chapter to come out this quickly. I'm not know for my speediness and I've got three other projects open
FF.net link right here. Hopefully this one won't get boned by the site.

Well, it's not a guarantee of anything... I just try to work on my stories in order of whichever one I haven't updated lately, which puts this at the bottom of the list for the moment. But it's not like that's a concrete law of the world; I'll work more on this if I feel inspired to do so.
Oh, and... is it only for me, or did FF.net just go totally kablooey for a little while there? The stories all went to an odd format, and the interface looked all weird... maybe it was screwing with my head as punishment for all the complaining I did.
Rising Dragon, my pre-reader, had some major RL problems (he can tell you if he wants to), so, it's understandable.

Day in the Life
Chapter 38
Spoiler for Escape PT IV:
Shamal stared. The woman, who had attacked her family, stared, though her eyes were wide for a different reason as the arm holding her magic blade trembled. It stopped mere centimeters from Shamal's neck. The woman's pupils seemed to dilate as she tried to breathe, her hand shaking and going numb as blood trickled from her mouth, the energy sword dissipating completely. "Gud... jub..." She stumbled back and fell to the ground, unmoving as Zafira's blade protruded from her throat.
The Guardian Beast turned to Shamal and put his hand on her shoulder. "Are you okay?"
She nodded at the question and closed her eyes, taking several breaths. "Thank you, Zafira. How about you?" She was worried about him; it had been so long since any of them had actually had to kill someone.
Zafira said nothing as there was a quick flash of light and Rein appeared floating near him, looking worried, whether it was for him or something else, he wasn't too sure. "We should make sure Hayate's alright."
"I'll call Carim and let her know what happened here." Shamal told him as he moved towards the house. At the very least, this might cause some serious problems for Hayate if the truth wasn't fully disclosed as soon as possible.
Before getting to the house, Agito grabbed Rein and with a frown on her face, spun the other unison device to face her. "You were supposed to watch Meister! What the heck were you thinking!?"
Rein shook her head and trembled as she took shuddering breaths. "You were all hurting... And Hayate... Hayate..."
*Flashback...*
"Rein..." Hayate coughed and looked at the unison device as it floated near her nervously. "Go..."
"But..!" Rein tried to argue with Hayate, who coughed some more, before groaning and grabbing her bucket, before trying to expel the contents of her stomach.
Groaning, Hayate flopped onto her back, shuddered and moaned in discomfort. "Go... Rein... Help our family..." She smiled softly before she reached up and gently caressed Rein's face. "You are the Wind of Blessing, Reinforce..." Rein grabbed her hand and squeezed it. "I gave you that name... To support and bless our family when they were in need of help."
"Hayate..." Rein sniffled slightly.
"So... Go..." Hayate lowered her hand and closed her eyes. "Save our family, protect all of us... I have faith in you."
Rein nodded, a determined look on her face as she left the room. "I won't let... Anyone hurt my family!" She called out as she flew out to the battle, getting a smile from Hayate in response.
*End Flashback...*
"...Oh..." Agito nodded, before sighing and hugging Rein. "Thanks... We might have been in trouble without your help." When Rein hugged her back, Agito smiled, but quickly let go. "Come on, we need to see how Meister's doing."

There was a loud clanging sound and Vince's eyes were wide as he stared at Signum as she used her gauntlet arm to block the axe handle, stopping the blade from getting to her neck. Quickly jumping back, he smirked as she got to her feet, blood flowing freely from her. "Normally, this is the time where I'm supposed to say something along the lines of you being too injured to even be able to move." Re-adjusting the grip on his axe, he shook his head. "I think I'd rather see what you can do in the state you're in." Looking at his weapon, he chuckled. "Maybe you can make it back in time to save your master." He had to bring his axe into a guarding position to block Signum's lunge at his head with an overhead strike, his eyes widened and he let out a grunt as he was kicked in the stomach, sending him crashing into the wall behind him. "Okay, that was wrong of me to say that." He was partially embedded in the wall as he lifted his hand up to put up a barrier, blocking Signum's attack. Her eyes weren't even focused on him at that time.
"Pure instinct?" Vince was suitably impressed, even so, he flicked the wrist on his injured hand, causing several pieces of the broken road to fly at Signum, crashing into her back with a wet slam and a soft cry of pain from the pink-haired knight. Getting up, he head butted her, making her stumble back.
"Thanks for that..." Signum said as Laevantine released a cartridge and lit itself on fire a moment before she swung it at him, a wall of pure fire emerging from it to engulf him. If it hadn't been for that headbutt, she probably wouldn't have been able to focus right then and there.
“Ah, shi—” Vince was cut off as the flames impacted his chest and engulfed him completely, causing him to scream out in pain. His barrier jacket did what it could to hold it off, but Signum’s fires were much too great and the autobarrier began to fail. Unable to withstand the pain, he collapsed, dropping to his knees before pitching forward face-first into the street. Despite the pain, though, the mercenary continued to try and fight it off, and as his skin seemed to boil away around his face, his grip on his axe tightened.
“Zerbrechen.” Came the voice of the Armed Device, glowing purple as a cartridge was ejected from it.
Signum stumbled a bit as more blood dripped to the ground. Honestly, she didn't know how she was standing, but at least she had... Her train of thought stopped as she heard a yell and chanced a look up at the smoldering form of Vince as he burst out of the dissipating inferno she had just trapped him in, only to get stabbed in the gut by the spike on the top of his axe. Still, centuries of battling hadn't left her that quickly as she seemed to fold around the weapon, minimizing the damage as she crashed onto the ground again.
Despite his skin practically smoldering, his jacket smoking and starting to fall apart and the small flame that was on his pants, which he put out a moment later, Vince couldn't help but be impressed by Signum's fast reaction time. "Impressive." He shook his head and focused on a quick healing spell, it wasn't much, just enough to dull the pain that was throbbing through his body. He happened to look down and blinked as he saw a fragment of metal on the ground. "Wait a second... This is..." His eyes widened as Signum jerked her arm up into the air, the metal of Laevantein's snake form wrapping around his body before she pulled back, tearing at his armor and flesh, causing him to do a spin flip, drop his axe and crash to the ground.
Sitting up and struggling to get to her feet, Signum couldn't even focus for something as simple as flight, her head throbbed horribly and everything seemed to taste like blood while looking like she had that one time Fate had decided to get back at her for a comment she had made when the blond had been pregnant. Signum made a mental note that if she survived this that she was going to dye Fate's hair pink, just to pay her back for turning Signum's hair green, yellow and blue on top of her own natural pink that one time.
Floating over to her, Vince shook his head. "You really were a warrior. If I wasn't paid to kill you, I would've let you live after this, but, orders are orders, and the money's good, so... Sorry." He really did like the way she fought. As he pulled his axe back for the finishing blow, again, he just couldn't help but compare what he was going through right now to what had happened before.
"Goodbye." Vince whispered as he swung his axe forward towards Signum's neck.
Signum's vision was blurring and starting to go dark as the axe swung at her neck. She just couldn't move, too much blood had been lost. 'To think that it ends like this...' She thought, not saddened by the fact that she was about to die, but rather by the fact that she couldn't be around to protect her family ever again. Honestly, she had been looking forward to teaching Alicia how to fight.
The pain rushing through her body was just horrible, she could barely hold Laevantein in her hands and... Why wasn't the final blow coming?
If Signum could think or see properly, she could see that the axe had stopped, just a mere milimeter from her neck as the arm holding it trembled slightly.
"GRAHHH!" Vince screamed as fell backwards, the axe falling from his hand as he let go in shock, his right eye suddenly bloodied as something pierced him there. As he lay on his back, all Vince could do was wonder what the hell that was.Grabbing at his eye as he looked up at the sound of a helicopter coming in close. A part of his mind wondered how the hell he missed that as a man with brown hair wearing a standard flight uniform and holding a rifle jumped out of the back of the helicopter when it was close to the ground. "Nice shot." Vince admitted to himself as his eye bled freely.
"You're under arrest." Vice said calmly, though deep down he had to wonder who the hell this person was, if he could injure Signum as badly as he did. Hell, even Nanoha hadn't been able to do anything like this to Signum without severe damage to herself.
Vince smirked at the newcomer before his axe glowed a light purple and turned into a pendant that shot from the ground to around his neck. "I've lost this one." He might have been able to win, even as he was, but the effort would have been too great. But there was more to it than that. Seeing him standing over Signum, despite being out-matched, it was impressive, to say the least.
Vince was suddenly reminded of a young man who had been saved by his mentor from a similar situation many years ago. "History repeats itself, huh?" He whispered to himself as he staggered to his feet, slowly, he didn't want the guy to shoot before he was ready. "Well... Looks like Sable just died." He shook his head at that before wondering if it had been the Guardian Beast, the unison devices or someone else that had gotten to her.
Vice's eyes widened as a Belkan triangle appeared underneath him. "Stop!" He took another shot, only this time it hit a triangular shield. "Shit!"
"I suggest you get her to a hospital." Vince said as he looked at Vice calmly. Oh sure, his eye hurt like hell, but he'd recover from this. "You might be able to stop me, but she'll die by that time, with all the blood-loss she's suffered." He suddenly smirked, but groaned as his left arm throbbed in pain. "She's only conscious right now because of her battle instinct." After getting the coordinates in his head straight, Vince started to fade away. "I look forward to the next time we fight, Signum..."
Vice cursed as the bastard disappeared, but looked at Signum and grabbed her shoulder. "Signum?" Three things surprised him at that moment, one was that he could feel her blood seeping through her armor when he touched her, a second one was that she turned her head to look at him, even though her eyes were blank, and the last thing was that her armor had decided that it had taken enough abuse for one day before finally giving up and falling off of her, leaving her bloody, completely naked and on her knees. Normally it would be an incredible turn on, considering how good Signum looked, but considering her current condition. "Hold on..." He bent over and picked her up, making sure that Storm Raider and Laevantein were secure in the process, and getting into the helicopter. "Storm Raider, get us back to those ambulences."
"Yes." His Device commented as the helicopter took off. Honestly, if it hadn't been for Storm Raider noticing the high levels of magic coming from this area, he would have never made it in time to save Signum. Looking down at her, he grimaced as she finally gave up and closed her eyes, her head rolling to the side as she fell completely unconscious.

Coughing as the flames got larger and larger, the people in the burning building were starting to panic, everywhere there was fire, and they were so close to getting out too. "Everyone! Get down!" A female voice was heard, where, they weren't sure, but they did what they were told to, before a loud exploding sound was heard and flaming debris and the wall were blown out onto the street. "Alright, let's get you out of here!" The female said as she came into view. She had red hair in a ponytail that was done up against her head. "Get on the board!" She called out, grabbing a few of the children and one of the elderly people. "Dieci?"
"Got these two." The brown-haired cyborg said as she picked up two young children. "That's the last people in this building."
"Good!" Wendi took the people that were on her board outside before dropping them, gently, to the ground below and going back up to get Dieci and the two children.
"One of these days we're going to need to learn how to fly on our own." Dieci chuckled softly, before coughing. "Sorry, lung full of smoke."
Wendi rolled her eyes as she touched down on the ground and made Dieci go to the ambulance with her as they grabbed some spare oxygen to force the smoke out of their lungs. Dieci, look, we might be cyborgs, but we still need to breath.
Think I don't know that? Was Dieci's response as she rolled her eyes. After a few moments the two stepped away from the ambulance as others got on and were carted away. "I feel like we're losing." Dieci sighed and blinked as Wendi hugged her. "Wendi?"
"Don't worry, we'll be okay. We'll find everyone in trouble and get them to safety." She let go of Dieci and smirked at her. "Besides, the Saint Church is helping us too, we both know how good Sein is at saving people when they need help."
Dieci laughed at that. "True." The two suddenly jumped as a car, one that was just a wire frame and engine, drove by with Subaru in hot pursuit.
"STOP!" Subaru launched another blast at the car, only to scream as he seemed to swerve out of the was.
"...I think I'll go help her." Wendi said softly as Dieci nodded. Besides, chasing down a speeding car looked rather fun at that moment.
Dieci chuckled softly as Wendi went after Subaru and the person who was driving crazy. "Wait a sec, how the heck can someone go faster than Subaru on Wing Road?" There was a beeping sound as a screen apeared in front of her. "Huh? Cinque?"
"Dieci, how are things on your end?"
"Pretty good." Cinque looked a bit worn out, but then again, Dieci supposed that she wasn't much better.
"Sein's been a great help and... Sein?!" Cinque suddenly ran off to the side and Dieci wondered what happened, hoping that Sein was okay.
(---)
"Sein? Sein?" Cinque shook the girl, getting a cough from the blue-green haired girl in response. Cinque sighed in relief as her sister smiled at her. "You scared me when you passed out like that."
"Sorry, I popped out in a bad spot and took too much smoke in at once." She coughed as Cinque helped her to the ambulance. "But that's everyone in that building."
Cinque shook her head and smiled, ruffling Sein's hair as she was given an oxygen mask and told to breath. "You're a good girl." Looking around, she was rather glad that the fires were starting to get under control. Still, something was bothering her at that moment, she just couldn't tell what it was.

Pyro laughed, oh how he laughed, the little redhead was burnt to a crisp. "Hehhehhehhehahahahaha! Now! The rest of the city can, ooomph!" His eyes bugged out as he was hit in the gut hard enough to send him into the air and crashing onto the ground with a thud.
Standing there with Graf Eisen resting on her shoulder, Vita shook her head, her skin was burned, her armor... Looking down, Vita sighed. "Maybe I should ask Hayate to get me something a bit tougher?" After all, it was slightly embarrassing to be wandering around in just her under-clothes. "Stay down!" Graf Eisen changed into its Gigant Form as she brought it down on his head. She smirked as he fell unconscious from such a gentle blow. "Man, I hit Subaru harder than that in training, wimp." Oh well, not everyone could be as tough as Subaru was, after quickly binding him up, she called out for a pickup.
"Vita! Good to hear from you. What's going on?"
Vita smiled as she heard Schach's voice. "Got one of the escaped criminals bound, gagged and ready for someone to torture."
Schach laughed at that. "Alright, we're a little stretched right now, but we'll be there as soon as possible."
"Alright. Do you guys need any extra help?" Vita looked down at herself and grimaced slightly. "Also, bring me a jacket, this jerk burned my armor off."
"Roger that, and no, we've got everything under control."
"Alright..." Vita nodded at that, but still... "I'm going to check the buildings that this freak was burning to make sure that no one's hurt, okay?"
"Alright, we'll have someone over there in a few minutes."
"Got'cha." Vita cut off communications and looked at Pyro, before shrugging. "Oh well, you don't need this." A quick release of the binds, a bit of pulling and resealing with binds later, she was wearing his shirt and grimacing. "Well, it's better than being seen in my underwear." She then ignored Pyro, knowing he'd be out for awhile, before heading into the nearest building and hoping that no one was inside them.
Unseen to Vita, someone was watching her as she left Pyro on the ground. As she ran into the building, Kagal stepped up to Pyro and looked at the fallen criminal before he shook his head as he looked at the downed form of Pyro. "Idiot." Then again, he supposed that the fool was just really excited after being locked up for so long. He looked at where the short redhead had disappeared and shook his head before turning and leaving the fool on the ground. After three steps, he chuckled and snapped his fingers, a magic circle appearing under him as the building that Vita had disappeared into started to crumble, before collapsing violently. Chuckling, he turned around, only to blink as he saw two church members, one boy with short, spiky brown hair who was wearing a battle suit and one girl with long, brown hair and a female version of the suit that the boy was wearing. "If you were looking to save your friend..." He trailed off as the girl pulled out two handles and red blades appeared in front of her as she took a stance. The boy held up his hand and a green glow appeared in front of his hands. "Die." He snapped his fingers and an explosion appeared between him and the two, kicking up a lot of dirt and allowing Kagal to quickly rush away from the two.
"Ray Storm." He took a look over his shoulder, only to find that a green powerful beam was speeding towards him. Hastily putting up a shield, he grimaced as the beam connected with his shield, before punching through it and blasting him in the chest and sending him crashing into a nearby tree. Grimacing, he shook his head and blinked as the girl held her blades to his neck.
"I suggest you don't move." The girl said, her eyes narrowed at him. "Otto, go make sure that Vita-san is alright."
Kagal smirked at that, he knew better, most everyone who got caught in his explosions didn't survive, especially when he dropped stuff on them. Oh well. He was about to move his hand to touch the tree when the girl in front of him moved her blade against his neck. "Sharp eye."
"I said, don't move." She narrowed her eyes at him. When he chuckled more, she frowned slightly. "What's so funny?"
Flexing his feet, even though Deed didn't see it, he smirked at her. "You think you've got me." That was all the warning she got before the ground under her feet exploded and sent her into the air and off balance.
Grimacing, Kagal ran from the two, clutching his face from how Deed's blades had cut into him.
"Stop!" Deed called out and flew after him. "Otto, make sure Vita's okay, I've got him."
"Right!" Her sister resumed either blowing parts of the top of the collapsed building or throwing debris away. "Vita-san? Are you okay? Answer me!" She jumped back as a large hammer crashed through the roof. "Vita-san!"
The redhead coughed a bit. "Gugh... What happened?" She groaned as she got up and grimaced. "Never mind, we need to make sure no one else is under here."
"Vita-san..." Otto put her hand on the Knight's shoulder. "If anyone was inside, they're likely dead now."
Vita punched the wood. "Dammit." It really sucked, if only the damned building hadn't collapsed around her.
Otto sighed, she understood perfectly, she frowned as she felt the way Vita was tensing, before she turned the knight and looked at her in the face. "...You're badly burned."
"I'm fine." Vita muttered, but Otto wouldn't budge.
"Go rest up before I bind you up and make you wait until the ambulances get out here." Vita was about to say something when Otto continued to speak. "Hayate-san would hate it if something happened to you because you pushed yourself too hard."
That did it. Those words just stopped whatever protests that Vita could have made. Sighing, the redhead nodded and grimaced, yeah, she felt pretty horrible at that moment. She let Otto lead her away from the fires before the boyish cyborg went back to working on finding survivors. Vita hoped, deep down, that there was no one in any of those buildings. She couldn't stand the thought of just sitting around if there was someone who needed help.
Honestly, Vita thought she could go on. If she had to, she wouldn't hesitate to jump in the fire to pull someone out. But, Otto did have a point, as much as it irked her. "Hey, Otto..."
"Yes?" The cyborg was curious as she cleared debris away.
"If you need help or find people, let me know, I'll help you get them out of the fires."
"...Just don't push yourself, Vita-san." Otto stopped talking as she continued to work on the debris.
(---)
Kagal grimaced as Deed kept dodging around his explosions. "Stand still!" He yelled as he spun around to face her and snapped his fingers several times, making the ground explode around her. He only had one problem with making people explode, they tended to move. Unless he could grab her, which he doubted she'd let him, he couldn't make her explode. He jumped back when she put on a sudden burst of speed and nearly took his legs out, still, she was off balance for more than a second, and that was all he needed.
He smirked as the ground under her feet exploded again. Maybe it wouldn't kill her or even stop her, but it should injure her enough to give him time to escape. Landing on the street, he turned to run some more when his body was flooded with light. "What the?" He looked to the source and his eyes widened. "Oh crap." Was all he could say before a blue sports car smashed into him, causing him to hit his head on the engine hood.
"Kagal?" An oh-so-annoyingly familiar voice was heard. Looking up, he grimaced as he saw Weasel driving the car. The front windshield was destroyed and from the way Weasel looked, he either crashed through it or crashed it into something. "Wow, fancy meeting you here." Weasel chuckled nervously before swerving to avoid a magic blast from above.
"Let me off!" Kagal yelled as he saw two females chase after him from the air. When Weasel shook his head and started talking like a deranged chimpanzee on a sugar high, Kagal slammed his hands onto the hood of the car to yell at him, but stopped as he realized that he had made a small, very small, it wasn't big, mistake as the car started to slowly change from blue to red.
"Oh, well, I guess I should let you go, huh?" Weasel chuckled as he opened the door and jumped from the moving death trap.
"You sunnvabiiiitttttcchhhh!" Kagal yelled as the car swerved, hit a mailbox, a bench, a light pole, before crashing into a store. "NOOOOOOO!" He screamed as the car exploded, engulfing him in a massive fireball of heat and shrapnel.
As he ran, Weasel winced, point-blank for one of Kagal's explosions really sucked. Still, Weasel was sure that the instant he got into the white pickup in front of him he could get away for good. "Ahhh!" He was blown away as the pickup suddenly exploded. "What the?" He looked around, was Kagal still alive somewhere and pissed at him? His eyes widened as binds of several layers suddenly wrapped around him and dropped him to the ground. "H...Hey! What's mmmph!?!" His eyes widened as his mouth was covered in binds.
"Just..." Subaru panted as she and Wendi finally caught up to the bastard. "Shut up!"
Wendi grabbed him and lifted him. "I can't believe how freaking annoying you are!" Not to mention dangerous, at least in a car. "Subaru, I've got him, you wanna make sure that the other guy that he hit is alive?" Subaru nodded and made her way over to the burning car wreckage.
As Weasel struggled to try and get loose, Wendi smirked at him as she pointed her surfboard at his head, the tip started to glow with magic. "You struggle too much and I might not be able to stop it from... Accidentally firing." When he calmed down and stopped struggling, Wendi was relieved, she really didn't want to kill him, but the bastard was crazier than she was!
*Flashback...*
"Got him!" Wendi yelled as she and Subaru FINALLY managed to hit that frame of the stolen car. Well, considering that there wasn't much left of it between Subaru's actions and the way that the freak in the car drove, this was probably as great a victory that they were going to get.
The two stared as the frame hit another car and the person that they were chasing went flying into the bushes about thirty feet away. "Dammit!" They cursed at the same time and rushed to get to the bushes before he escaped. It only took them two seconds to get there. Ripping the bushes out of the ground, the two searched for their prey, only to look up as a car's lights suddenly turned on. "Crap!" The two dodged out of the way as a blue sport's car raced through where they were a moment ago.
"I'm going to kill him!" Wendi yelled as she got on her board. Thankfully Subaru didn't say anything about it one way or another as she joined Wendi on Wing Road.
*Flashback...*
Looking around, Wendi grimaced at the destruction around them. This was going to be a pain to clean up.
(---)
Sighing as she kicked the door to the roof open, Teana had to wonder who the hell was up here, looking down on the city, instead of running for cover like a normal person. It was times like this that she really, really wished that she could fly, or at least have something like Subaru, Ginga or Nove had, being stuck on the ground really sucked. She could have unisoned with Teela, but doing that just to get to the top of a roof when the building wasn't in any real danger of falling apart, at least not yet, seemed like a big waste of magic to her. Looking around, she quickly found the person that Cross Mirage had detected. "Excuse me, you really need... to..." She trailed off, taking a hesitant step back as the person turned around. "Rudal... Bernstal..."
The tall man smirked at the younger girl, before she shook her head and pointed her gun at him. "You know of me, huh?" Standing straight and tall, he looked her over, before he shook his head. "Sadly, I don't know who you are, so, if you'll just..." He trailed off when she fired a shot at him, which caused him to have to put up a barrier to block. "I see, you just won't leave me alone."
"You're under arrest, if you come peacefully, you..." Teana's eyes widened as Rudal snapped his wrist forward, a wave of magical power escaping from his fingertips and rolling over the roof towards her. Jumping out of the way, she took cover behind a small chimney as the staircase that had been behind her exploded. "Just give it up, Rudal." She called out, taking a few shots at him with her gun in its cannon mode.
"Tea..." Teela was just over her shoulder. "His hands... There's something in his right hand."
"Is so." Cross Mirage spoke up at that time. "Device detected."
Teana frowned before jumping out of the way as Rudal kicked the chimney into dust, causing her to spin and slide away from him, her eyes were narrowed as she looked at his smirking face as he held up his right hand, a purple gem was embedded in the glove on his hand. "So that's your device." She muttered and quickly put up a barrier as another wave of energy crashed into her as Rudal snapped his arm back.
"Tea! That's wind energy." Teela relayed to her as Teana fought against the crushing wave of power. When it finally subsided, she quickly backed up and got some space from Rudal. She knew that he wasn't trying too hard, otherwise she'd probably be a lot worse off, but she needed to know exactly what he could do. Reading about someone's file and seeing them in action were two different things.
"Tell me something, girl, what do you know about me?" Honestly Rudal was more curious at that point than anything else.
"That you went rogue and badly injured your comrades while doing so."
Rudal shook his head as he heard that. "So that's the official story, huh?"
*Flash...*
"You can't expect me to stay calm!" Rudal yelled at the general in front of him. "After what I saw!"
"Just keep quiet about it, Rudal." The general, the old man that he was, shook his head. "We'll deal with it, but you and Vince are to forget what you saw."
Rudal slammed his fist on the general's desk, utterly destroying it. "You can't expect us to keep quiet about this!"
"You'll have to." The general, if he had any reaction to his desk being destroyed, didn't show it as he got up and turned away from his subordinate. "It appalls me too, Rudal, but there's not much that can be done."
Rudal gritted his teeth and balled his hands into fists. "After all those atrocities... Those were citizens! Innocent people! What could you possibly..."
"It's for the good of the Bureau!" The general roared as he spun on Rudal and narrowed his eyes at the mage. "If this is successful, we can save so many lives."
"At the cost of hundreds of lives?!"
The general sighed and shook his head. Honestly, why couldn't he see the big picture here? "A few hundred now to save thousands, if not millions later? It's a small sacrifice that needs to be made. If you could just open your eyes, you could see that!"
Rudal twitched and turned to the door, leaving the general in the room. "This is a mistake! You'll see!" He slammed the door behind him, determined to do something about what he had seen.
*Flash...*
Rudal twitched, that memory still haunted him to this day. Still, he wasn't going to let this opportunity leave him, suddenly charging forward, before leaping up into the air and spread his arms out, magical energy gathering in them before he snapped his hands down, letting out a powerful air blast that tore through the roof that Teana was standing on, causing her to abandon the roof. "You really think you can win against me, girl? I was taking on better than you before you were born!" He blinked as the smoke cleared and Teana wasn't there.
"You're wasteful." He looked up and saw his opponent, no, wait, she looked different, her hair was blond now and her uniform looked blue, green and yellow in color instead of what it had been before. That was all he got to see before she held up her cannon and fired it at him, he managed to dodge out of the way of the shot, but it did graze his body, leaving a gash from his chest down to his leg.
"Heh, so I am..." Rudal smirked at her as he seemed to disappear. He seemingly reappeared behind her and was surprised as she turned around and fired a shot at his head that caused him to twist and move away from her. "Impressive. I'm surprised you could keep up with my speed." If he was honest, he might have had a lot of power to just chuck around freely, but his skills had rusted and dulled considerably, hell, a lot of his fighting abilities were starting to slowly come back to him. Most of the idiots in prison that knew how to fight only knew how to fight with magic and none of them used their heads for anything good. Smirking, he flipped back onto a nearby roof and looked up, only to see a large ball of magical energy heading his way. "Now who's wasteful?" He asked rhetorically as he held up his left hand, a green circular wall appearing at the tips of his fingers. There was a smirk on his face as the energy connected with his barrier, before being launched right back at Teana.
"Dammit!" Teana couldn't believe what just happened as she hovered away from the energy. Maybe she shouldn't have felt so confident at that moment, and she felt that she needed to put him down, the quicker the better.
"Sorry, Tea, that was my fault." Teela apologized to her partner as the two of them engaged in a running battle with Rudal across the rooftops. Even though it was exhilarating, Teana was actually watching Rudal's movements, both with her eyes and with Teela's "radar" abilities.
Rudal narrowed his eyes, something was up, every time he got ready to attack her, she seemed to change direction on him or shoot at him to disrupt what he was doing. It wasn't perfect, nothing was, but it was more than irritating to him. Not to mention that she used blasts of compressed air to get more distance between them. "You aren't much for fighting at close range, huh?"
"You think a gunner is much for fighting at close range?" Teana shot back and mentally smirked as he moved in close, before Cross Mirage changed from cannon mode to dagger mode. The look on his face as she cut across his chest, drawing blood was pretty humorous. Materializing another gun into her left hand, she pointed that one at Rudal and narrowed her eyes at him. "Surrender now." She said as she landed on the roof of a skyscraper, the criminal floating in the air in front of her.
"You said you weren't very good at close range." Rudal grabbed at his chest and felt the slow trickle of blood from the shallow wound.
"I lied." Teana said calmly, moments before she felt a throbbing in her head, her eye sight suddenly became blurred as she stumbled back. "What..." She grimaced and staggered back, grabbing at her chest as she felt major pain coming from within with her left hand as she used her right hand to steady herself.
"TEA!" Teela suddenly yelled, before cancelling the unison. Teana gasped as the pain suddenly disappeared and her vision cleared in an instant. Even so, she felt rather worn out.
"I see..." Rudal muttered as he floated up to look at the two of them. "Unison, huh?" He smirked at them as Teana got back to her feet and fired a couple shots at him as she made her way to the edge of the building. "I think I'll end this now." He said as he floated backwards and landed on a shorter building a few feet away. Holding his hands to the side, he started to gather his magic between them, grimacing at the feel of an extreme strain on his body.
Teana panted a little bit, but closed her eyes, an orange magic circle appeared around her feet as she concentrated on the magic around her. "Cross Mirage... Let's do this. Teela, watch my back."
"Right!" Teela saluted her and floated just behind her, making sure to keep an eye out for anyone else that might attack them and she was idly curious as to what Teana was going to do as she held up Cross Mirage in front of her. Her eyes widened as Cross Mirage started burning through Cartridges and red dots of magic started gathering in front of her.
"Eclipting Wave!" Rudal yelled as he snapped his arms forward, a blue ball of energy flying straight at Teana as she gathered magical energy in front of her.
"STARLIGHT BREAKER!!" Teana cried out, pulling the triggers, an orange beam of magic rushing down and crashing into and through the blue energy ball into the surprised look of Rudal, smashing into him and sending him crashing into the ground below with an explosion that kicked up a large dust cloud.
Panting, Teana slumped to her knees and smiled as Teela floated near her. "I'm okay." She chuckled softly, sweat dripping down her face. "Are you okay?" When Teela nodded, she smiled lightly. "Okay, all we need to durrk!" Her eyes widened as felt a powerful cutting sensation on the right side of her body, cutting from her leg up her chest and through her shoulder, nearly separating it. "What?" Was all she could ask before she saw Rudal, in only his pants, which were in tatters and falling apart, he had no shirt on, dark burns and smudges on his body, reach between her breasts to grab her neck and rush, slamming her through the metal wall she had been using to steady herself before and continuing on until he slammed her into the next building over, letting her explode in a burst of power that had her slumping to her knees and falling over to her side.
Rudal panted and groaned, his body twitching as he looked at her. "You were good. Better than I thought." He turned and started to walk away from her and tried to calm down, before blinking as he heard some female grunting behind him. Turning around, he saw Teana trying to get back to her feet while pointing Cross Mirage at him, even though she was bleeding freely from the wound he had put in her side. "You should stay down." He muttered, before shaking his head and spread his arms to the side, gathering magic in his hands again. "This is the end."
"Tea!" Teela got in front of Teana, her arms wide as she defied Rudal to attack them both.
"Eclipting Wave!" Rudal brought his arms forward and releasing the deadly energy forward towards the two of them.
"TEA!" Teela cried out as Teana tried to push her out of the wave as it came crashing down on them.

Oh, and... is it only for me, or did FF.net just go totally kablooey for anyone else? It looks all weird, and all the stories seem to have gone to a weird format. I wonder if the site got hacked, or if they just did a huge overhaul and I missed the announcement or something.
Well, it's not a guarantee of anything... I just try to work on my stories in order of whichever one I haven't updated lately, which puts this at the bottom of the list for the moment. But it's not like that's a concrete law of the world; I'll work more on this if I feel inspired to do so.

"Um… nee-chan, not to put this the wrong way, but… well… why are you here?"
"Sette! It is you!Oooooh, nee-chan, it's so good to see you again!
Do I detect a StrikerS Nano reference in Ginga's faceplant?

My fics Due to certain things, I am not here, find me over on TFF.
It's been a while. Due to the long break, I forgot wth I was doing in this chapter. Hence it might end a bit abruptly.
Spoiler for Vengeance on Darkness 4; The Break:
In the distant horizon thunder clashed and boomed above the ocean. The night had just begun to grow over the nation, so the sparks of lightning were clearly visible when the arcs struck together. It was the only light that briefly illuminated the dining room in the black fortress.
She was on the balcony again, watching the awesome performance. Every time a thunderstorm grew close she would stand there and watch the arcs dance among each other. It reminded her of past times, of both regret and happiness. She'd never let herself forget about the memory born of those past days. It was to be forever marked in her mind so she wouldn't repeat any of the things she'd done.
With a low howl, a figure in a dark cloak appeared from a hole of shadows behind her. Its skin wasn't visible, as the cloak covered everything, and the cloak's sleeves connected over its front. Its 'head' faced down and it didn't say anything to announce its arrival.
"Her path is an established one," the Dark King said, acknowledging the figure's presence, but keeping her eyes on the thunderstorm. "I do not think she will deviate from it."
The figure spoke with a voice far from human; "Even though she has doubts?"
"She has doubts, agreed, but she is far too stubborn to give up on her task. Mere doubts are not enough to stop her. Not now." And it's my fault she thought.
"Being a Chosen One rarely implies a weak mind." The figure uttered a disappointed sigh from within its cloak. "We should have foreseen this."
"Except she isn't a Chosen One, Leviathan. As powerful as she is, and as rare as it might be that the Tome of the Night Sky has made one, a mistake is a mistake... And mistakes need to be corrected." She looked at him over her shoulder. "Leviathan, deliver her my message."
As the order was given, the black hole of shadows appeared again and Leviathan began to retreat into it, but the Dark King stopped him with a raised hand. "Leviathan. If she refuses my offer, do not interfere."
"In your name and by your words, it shall be done," Leviathan said and finally disappeared into the darkness. The black hole disintegrated after him.
The Dark King returned her attention to the thunderstorm and sighed. It had been a mistake to send the Mariages in the first place. It had been the wrong course of action and she feared it had only made Clara stronger in her resolve. She hoped within her heart that the girl could see reason before it was too late.
*
Angelice reminded her of the academy. It was of course a lot bigger, but it shared the same style as the academy's architecture. The spires touching the sky had a golden shimmer and twisted wildly in their ascent, with sharp edges and bulbous platforms standing out against the blue sky. Next to them, on the ground, stood the massive cathedrals that loomed above the street filled with people. Stained glass windows decorated the buildings, beautiful displays of wonderful symbols and characters of yore.
The artistry overall was much more refined than it had been at the academy Clara admitted. There the purpose of learning, not architecture, was in its focus and even though it had been called the Temple of Artists, it merely referred to magical performance, not art. Still, the architecture on it had been in the same style as Angelice and it was still as lovely.
High up on one of the spire's platforms a sleek airship in a light-blue color with golden stripes docked and cast its huge shadow over the ground. Clara noticed it carried the symbol of the Honourable Sir Thomas and guessed it belonged to the Royal Air Force of Klavein. The Klavein nation was known for the superiority of their Air Force, yet Clara knew they hadn't had much success against the Dark King.
Of course, this wasn't a military airship in the strictest sense. The public rarely had a chance to see military hardware at all, other than at times of war. This one was used for public commune, forcing a slight redesign of the military version, to lighten the loads of people the trains was forced to take. Its hull was somewhat more aerodynamic than its military counterpart for an increase in speed, with most of its armor gone to give space for other utilities.
Her repetition of the countless of history lessons she had been forced to take at the academy halted when the ground began to shake and a deafening roar swept through the streets. A powerful wind followed and sped past the people on the streets.
"Mariages?" she exclaimed and took a stance. Her long hair fluttered in the wind and almost stood on end behind her. "No, it has to be that dragon again!"
The wind only lasted for a few seconds and the roar grew thinner. Even the rumble began to die and Clara noticed the old man sitting on a bench next to her, waving a dismissive hand.
"Don't worry, it's just the old girl taking off," he said.
Clara gave him an questioning look. "Old girl?"
"Look. There." She followed his finger pointing at the sky and gaped when she saw what it was. "The old girl has been scheduled to take off for a few weeks and they finally got it all prepared."
The 'old girl', which the man kept referring to, was a starship. Again the history lessons leapt into her mind, but she was still amazed to see it. She had never seen one in real life, only in old books or recordings, and seeing one for the first time, and feeling it, was amazing.
As far as she could see from so far away, the design was similar to that of a Sentinel-class dreadnought, starships built for intergalactic travel and deep space military operations. It was almost rectangular in shape and, if she remembered the numbers correctly, over six-hundred meters long and two-hundred meters high. Its edges were slightly rounded and so were its bottom, where humongous thrusters were exploding with tremendous force to rip the starship from gravity's grip. For all that magic could do alone, powering a ship of such a mass required far more than a few Alamanta Magical Force Generators. Not to mention a vastly experienced mind to operate it.
The starship rose slowly to the sky and began to be reduced to a dot. What mission it had to conduct Clara could only guess, but it couldn't be good. With the Dark King rampaging across the world one would think the resources would be better needed planetside. Yet, if such a starship was launched it only showed the existence of a far greater danger in space. Additionally, a dreadnought never traveled alone and she shuddered at the thought of hundreds or more starships taking off in other areas, heading for a distant part of space.
When the starship fell out of her vision, life on the streets turned to normal. She felt like a fool for the rash reaction and strode off, taking long strides towards a part of the city were she knew she could find a place to rest, even if it was still early in the afternoon.
To her relief it took her less than twenty minutes to find a, relative to its neighbouring businesses, cheap hotel to stay in. After paying the sum and signed a form without too many shady questions on it, she headed upstairs.
Her room was on the third floor and she discovered it overlooked the gorgeous garden in the back. As soon as she had closed the door behind her, thrown her backpack on the floor and removed the boots from her aching feet, she opened a window and felt the wind gently touch her cheek.
She took a deep breath, taking in the vastly different smells from the garden compared to the streets, and slumped down on her bed. She let her body fall backwards on it, a comfy bounce embracing her back. Without removing her sweaty clothes, she curled up on her side with her arms around her knees and fell asleep.
*
The birds in the trees had let loose their songs for quite some time and it filled the garden to the brim. Their chirpy, tiny voices was carried into Clara's room through its opened window and met her just as she stepped out of the shower, a towel wrapped neatly around her slim figure and her long wet hair sticking to her back.
"Are you still going with that?" she said with a less than amused grimace at the birds outside. "Couldn't you have saved it for later?"
She checked her magi-timer. She'd been sleeping for over thirteen hours and it had certainly been enough to recover. She hadn't slept so deep for weeks, as the dreams had teared at her mind, but this time there had been nothing to disrupt.
She dried her hair and then began to get dressed. She'd left the clothes in the care of roomservice in the early morning and they were now in pristine condition. The Tome was out of the backpack and laid on the bed. Clara gave it suspicious glances now and again, questions poking at her from within, while she put her hair in a ponytail.
Perhaps after breakfast, she decided and struck some keys on the virtual screen at the door. She ordered some locally brewed tea, a slice of fresh bread and some strange fruit she'd never heard of. She confirmed the order with a final keystroke and strode over to the window while she waited.
A peculiar bird was observing her when she leaned outside. It sat on a branch in the garden and its huge black eyes wasn't moving at all. Its hooked beak was small compared to its head, but its wings, with a mix of green and yellow feathers, were huge and seemed to be quite sharp. They looked more mechanical than organic and when the bird stretched them out to their full length, which almost measured two metres across, Clara could see an additional set of wings beneath the others. Those were more organic, but it made the bird look like a weird mutant.
The panel at the door chimed and the bird seemed to be frightened by it. It flapped its wings once and took off, rustling the branches in the tree and made some leaves lose their grip, falling onto the ground in a slow descent.
Clara turned around at the sound and ordered the door to open. What met her wasn't a butler-bot as the one that had taken her clothes earlier. Instead there was a little girl dressed in a white summer dress holding onto the tray with Clara's breakfast.
"I'm sorry, miss," she said, "but the bots have gone for maintenance."
Even though the tray was fairly big, the girl didn't seem to have any problems carrying it. She couldn't be more than twelve Clara thought and accepted the tray. Before Clara could thank her the girl made a tiny curtsy and ran off, thick brown hair jumping up and down behind her head.
"Weird girl," Clara muttered and the door slid shut behind her. She put the tray on the bed and sat down beside it. "Reinforce."
While she took a sip from the cup of tea, the Tome sprung to life and Reinforce appeared in a cloud of magical light and particles.
"Yes, Master?"
Clara patted the bed on the other side of the tray. "Sit down."
Confusion hinted behind Reinforce's face, but she did as she was told. She didn't ask what Clara wanted and waited patiently.
"Reinforce," Clara said and put the cup down, "I want to ask you some questions. About you, the Tome and other things."
"Yes?"
There wasn't any hesitation or doubt in her voice Clara noticed and asked; "First, is that your standard attire?"
Reinforce looked down on her black clothing and shook her head. "Yes, until Master chooses something else."
"Chooses?"
"Yes, visualize what you want us to wear in your mind and it'll appear."
"OK then..." Clara closed her eyes and concentrated. Do I feel stupid now. I have no idea what I should imagine... Well, there's that of course...
Sharp black edges came to existence in her mind. With Reinforce in her memory she applied her figure to the armor and personalized it. A slight modification there, a change of shape on another part. The rest of the Guardians' appearance flooded into her from the Tome to assist. She decided to apply the same design on each of them.
Feeling satisfied with the final design she opened her eyes again. Reinforce had the armour on her with a slightly surprised look on her face.
"Is it comfortable?" Clara asked.
"Very. Thank you. Its perfect."
"The second question," Clara went on, "concerns why I have the Tome. How did that happen? There must be stronger mages in this world than me."
"A new Master is chosen by some factors that depend on the current world in which it exist. While I, as an Administrator, have a deep insight into the Tome's mechanics, this is one thing I can't provide an accurate answer for. However, I have no doubt the Tome choose you because it recognizes your strength and goal."
"And what if it's wrong?" Not that I would like it to be...
"That's impossible." Reinforce shook her head to emphasize her point. "It has never happened."
Clara rose an eyebrow, but didn't pursue it. Instead she took another bite out of the toast and waited a bit before asking the next question.
"How many Masters have you had before me?"
"I do not remember. It's like a heavy fog obstructing the truth."
"It doesn't matter what I ask does it? As long as it pertains to your memories... You can't see them."
Reinforce nodded with a sad smile.
"Right then." Clara took another sip of the tea and then stood up. "We're wasting time here. Let's move on."
"Huh? Already? You've barely rested."
"I'm fine. A good night's sleep was all I needed." She started to put on her boots. "You don't have to go back into the Tome. Walk with me out of town."
"Thank you, Master."
*
They didn't see the little breakfast girl again when they left the hotel. There were a few guests crowding the restaurant on the lower floor, but most of the guests seemed to still be in bed.
On the street it wasn't much different. The real crowds had yet to start moving and walking down the main street was easy. The radiant buildings that stretched high up into the sky reflected the sun's light to the brink of blinding Clara, but she could still see the airships moving around high up there in the clouds.
"I still wonder where those starships went," she mumbled and peered further up into the sky. For a moment she thought she saw a shadow beyond the clouds, but it disappeared as fast as she had set her eyes upon it.
Reinforce was still in the armour Clara had given her, walking next to her with her hands clasped behind her back. "Where are we heading next, Master?"
"We will soon be Klavein, we're heading to Brynstride for a last visit."
Reinforce tilted her head. "Last visit?"
"Klavein was one of the first nations to be destroyed by the Dark King. Brynstride is right at the border. It's my hometown."
"Oh... I'm sorry."
"Don't say that. I've heard it enough times," Clara said and clenched a fist. "Let's just move on."
Reinforce just nodded and followed her Master.

The little breakfast girl was hiding behind a crate at the exit of Angelice when Clara and Reinforce arrived there. The massive iron gate was patrolled by countless of soldiers, accompanied by magical cannons hovering behind them. The gate itself rose twenty feet above ground and could only be opened at a small house at the top of it. It was the final defence for Angelice if any foes were to break through the heavily guarded Blackwing Pass beyond it.
None of the guards had noticed the little girl's presence yet, thanks to her dampening magic. Though the soldiers' surveillance was usually tight enough to detect anything, the little girl had assistance from the Dark King herself.
She watched as Clara let a guard look over her papers, though he kept a watchful eye towards Reinforce, whom Clara had introduced as her servant. At first it seemed the guard didn't believe anything of what she said, but eventually he sighed and let them through. They dealt with people everyday, and there were some much stranger than this.
The little girl stayed behind the crate and didn't move. Her telepathic link to the Dark King continued to send visual and audio images until it was disconnected and she passed out, letting the guards discover her as she collapsed.
And now, everyone's favorite socially inept Number continues her mission to find out what her mission is!
"Um… nee-chan, not to put this the wrong way, but… well… why are you here?"
"Sette! It is you!Oooooh, nee-chan, it's so good to see you again!
Ouch, poor Ginga. Always the victim no matter what she does. Why do I get the feeling she's going to be the one who will "bond" with Sette the most when this is over? Because I just have a feeling. It's a hunch. I don't know. Maybe I'm dreaming.
Of course, now Sette has more or less become accepted into the family judging by Wendi and Nove's reactions to her (or lack of reactions, in Nove's case), but a bigger problem remains of what mission Cinque will give her and whether or not Subaru and Ginga will fully accept her. Fun!

Yeah... I figured since it was pretty much canon that the free Numbers (even the ones who have joined the Nakajima family) still consider Jail pretty much their 'dad' and don't hold any ill-will towards him, they'd probably accept Sette pretty much instantly. I mean, they're still on good terms with the guy who raised them to be war machines, why wouldn't they be on good terms with their sister? Well, except maybe Quattro.
And poor Ginga indeed. But that's just what she gets for wearing robot roller-skates in the house!
