Fate/Extra Last Encore - Anime Discussion

I should have expected nothing less from Shaft . That was quite the first episode.

So curiosity got the better of me and I went in without subs.

I have played the game.

Yet I still have no clue what's going on here. Perhaps when a sub is available I'll understand more, but they decided to go for a vastly different approach than the game.

I mean I don't mind myself. I'm actually not some kind of purist. I think a medium needs to be the best medium it can possibly be without getting dragged down by its source material.

Today is the day EXTRA anime finally starts.

I am taken aback because it took long to get here, but when I look back, there were only happy things.
I've been blessed with several animations so far, but this is the first time it's not an "anime adaption of a game" but a "book I wrote to be animated".


"You can go wild with your taste. Do what you want"


These words that were said to me in the 2nd meeting are the base of "Last Encore".
(And this is how I got my engine running, but since I have no experience with writing anime scenarios, I wrote the source novel-ish book for "Last Encore", and had Sakurai-san help me adapt and adjust that into anime scenario format.)


Through "Last Encore", I tried to make it something that feels different depending on whether you know the premise.
For the people who will watch this anime as their first "EXTRA" experience, I want this to be the starting point where they become interested in the original game and the comics (5 volumes in total, on sale from Kadokawa!)
For the people familiar with the original game, I want them to go "What...?" at the differences.
So people can have fun playing EXTRA after watching the anime, and people can have fun watching the anime after playing the game.
I hope we made something that can be enjoyed both ways.

This is the first time working on something big with SHAFT, but they were very patient with this troublesome project, sometimes surpassing my imagination with how wonderful they were.

I'm actually rather excited, since this will be a new experience even for those of us who have played the game. We can speculate about who the pink haired girl is and the like.

Also pretty excited to see what they will do with the story. I enjoyed playing Extra, but part of me is looking forward to see what twists are ahead. Sometimes I'd like a pretty exact adaptation, but I'm ok with the idea going in that Nasu wanted to change things up.

I do wonder what the significance of Shinji's 'girlfriend' Amari will be. She must be there for more than change for the sake of change. Be kind of boring if it was just 'oh and Shinji also killed her offscreen.'

Hakuno has some interesting qualities as well. There is the kind of blank slate you'd expect from that character (no matter the gender), but more under the surface. A level of anger/hate/rage than even he understands.

Makes me wonder if there is a difference between the male and female MC. Maybe it's really a constant loop. Sometimes he's a guy, sometimes he's the girl, and this time is just the male. But at the core he or she is pretty blank in terms of personality. But one thing that keeps accumulating with the repetition is this anger and rage at being continually put through this hell.

I feel like Shaft was the right call here. They up the weird factor that the Extra setting has going for it.

Shinji definitely did not kill her. His name didn't become "selected" until after he "killed" Hakuno, which means he didn't kill Amari first.

I feel like they're definitely trying to make you THINK it's Tamamo, given the pink hair and official pose being almost identical to her's. Add in what's going on in FGO JPN, and you have Tamamo fever everywhere! But I like the theory I saw that she's Kiara, since apparently there's a Nun pun in her kanji name.

That kind of makes sense. Masters usually fill the role of students in the prelims.

Amari Misao is her name. VA is Imamura Ayaka. She's pretty important if she even has a character page in the official website next to the characters like Rin and Shinji so I think we'll see her again as one of the other Masters.

Amari Misao is 尼里ミサオ.
The 尼 in Amari means a nun, more specifically a Buddhist nun. Her name Misao can mean 操 which means chastity. Kiara may not be chaste but she is a Buddhist nun. So yeah.

Heck, there are EXTELLA elements too. This could either turn out to be a great series or a jumbled mess.

As for episode.1 itself, I'll say it's the same but different. Kinda like the same feeling after completing the tutorial segment of EXTRA.

I guess it really is a "reimagining" of F/E. At least they were consistent enough in Hakuno always vaguely feeling that something was off, and that Shinji was still an abject shitbag from the moment he's introduced.

Hakuno changed self-address from 'boku' to 'ore' in the anime which baffled both Abe and Tange, and according to Tange in the latest episode of Chaldea Radio Station, Nasu did it intentionally with a reason.

Just saw it. I wondered how they were going to get the mind-screw of the early parts of EXTRA done. Now I know how and I have to say I am impressed. Also, darn it Shinji. Can't you have one show where you're not a bastard. You're making my fanfics harder to write.
