I must be the last person in here to champion Sub Station Alpha and also the last timer in here that primarily uses audio timing.
I prefer a small lead in and lead out, determined by whether consecutive lines are spoken by the same person. 100 ms is more than enough. But hey, as long as the subs appear when they need to that's all I care about. Timing's a grunt work anyway.

Maybe because he's used to it. I know people that time a standard anime episode in 45 minutes using SSA and complementary tools. If that's not considered fast, I don't know what is. Just because there are "better" tools available doesn't mean they work for everyone and anyone. Habit is like a comfortable bed; easy to get in, hard to get out.
