Well, the first movie had a pretty limited release as well. What I heard from some Tokyo-based Macross fans is that the staff was working on the first movie almost up to the release date, so making a large number of prints of the film in just a few days was impossible. I have no way of verifying that it's true, however.

But IF it's true, and since Kawamori was (as of this last weekend) still working on the second film, with the release date less than three weeks away, I think the second film may be having a similar limited release.

Of course, DVD sales is where the real money is...

I wonder if the 2nd movie would include elements from Episode 22: Northern Cross, since I consider that one to be the most emotional and hearbreaking episodes in Frontier.

Hey, even I can engage in a short moment of pessimistic "Wah, Kawamori loves Ranka more than Sheryl, OMGwearesoscrewed!".

I'll be back to my usual optimism in a second.

Alto should consider to peer with both. Sounds rude and nasty, but he isn't gettin' any younger and if both get along with the constellation... why not?

My understanding is that animated movies rarely get a very wide theatrical release in Japan anyway. So yes, DVD and Bluray sales are probably a more appropriate gauge of success.

According to a gaming related article, the Hybrid Pack (Blu Ray movie plus that "Trial Frontier" game) sold close to 153,000 copies in its first week. I'm not really familiar with the Japanese movie/game market, but that sounds like a pretty decent figure.

Hm. Apparently the anime industry is a bit more niché in Japan than I had previously thought. ^^

Mostly when it comes to movies, unless its Miyazaki's works, then thats a whole different story.

People are more used to long-running episodes of anime than movies, the former being vastly more popular with the general audience, never mind that most movies are not original production, but recaps of their televised counterparts.

On the same building?

There are no seperate cinemas for animated movies. The first movie had a revenue of 650 million yen. For comparison, a few other movies (taken from wikipedia.jp):
- Haruhi: 800 million yen
- Gundam 00: 870 million yen
- NGE 1.0: 2 billion yen
- NGE 2.0: 4 billion yen
- Karigurashi no Arrietty: 9.25 billion (!) yen

The MF movies are being distributed by Clockworks, which is a smaller company and also distributed the Haruhi movie and Rebuild of Evangelion. The largest distributor/producing company in Japan is by far Toho (had a share of almost 2/3 of the overall cinema revenue in 2010).

Yeah, such is the price a writer pays for trolling his audience a few too many times... suddenly nobody trusts his words anymore, because him pulling a fast one on them has become the norm, not the event.
