There are official subs.

I always felt the region locking thing was quite ridiculous, How much more would it cost them to license all the other english speaking territories as well? Certainly the practical costs would be almost 0, only the hosting.

The stream on Hulu actually has watchable video quality if you can play the 480p stream (didn't try the lower res one since this was the higher quality option). I'm pleasantly surprised given how dark the show is. I was expecting at best something that looked like a Youtube video especially with this show.

No. There was no specific mention from FUNimation that they will only be doing the first episode and from the press release, it sounds like they plan on uploading episodes weekly.

Starting from this episode and onwards, I will be using the help of blogs to override the language barrier in order to understand the dialogues.

First of all, before this episode's climax I was under the impression that the baby was the runaway Shikabane and made use of the unsuspecting doctor to conceal its identity.

And Makina's lone-wolf and rough-hearted attitudes shares many traits in common with the Saya of Blood, the Last Vampire, which was more evidenced in episode three; Makina relies on unconventional and unorthodox methods to dispose of the creatures.

Spoiler for ep4: Well, as far as episodic stories go, this was probably the best of the four. The poor singer... The ending even changed with her song... In the meantime, the overall story is still difficult to grasp... or rather, uninteresting. So we are having these episodic stories and some big bad guy is going around carrying a red box (Pff... Is this Neuro?). There is a bit of development, plot-wise, so I guess the whole episode wasn't wasted... And the characters are still dull... There is nothing likable about Makina, who is just a sack of emo, or Ouri, who just goes around and follows cats. Was the singer's "scary" face supposed to be a gag? 'Cause while it was scary for being so random, it left me laughing... And as always, the power balance is strange in this anime. Makina seems weak at times, and sometimes she suddenly gets cool. The shikabane this episode was powerful and had the advantage in her human form, and starts to get defeated when she transforms. Then we have Ouri, that somehow manages to send a living adult man flying with a punch. Maybe it's because I'm feeling ill so I should have slep rather than watch this...oh well... The episode this week isn't much a change from the previous ones. Still episodic and still somewhat boring. Makina is the main problem because she is so very week...why couldn't they have her do something other than getting her ass kicked at the start then machinegunning the monster to death afterwards. The repetitiveness doesn't help at all. And as well as being physically weak...she she is also a mental sham. But I just hate Ouri a lot more...he sucks as a male lead. He doesn't know what is going on, butts into things he isn't supposed to, and now I feel some "vibes" that he is displeased with his bro having a contract with Makina. I will laugh if this leads to anger and then the dark side as he totally looks the part. Spoiler: The thing is that the baby was human all along, and his mother was the Shikabane who come back to look after its newborn. The doctor took the cells of that Shikabane to manufacture a serum, that could possibly help him to treat his wife's sickness. But, the truth was even more grissly and murkier than what it appeared to be. The doctor was made as a lackey for some strange sect wished wanted from him to make a serum that induces the Shikabane transformation. Those guys found out what the doctor was doing and eliminated him. The even more gloomy part is that the murderer results to be a monk. This is another plot device that Shikabane Hime: Aka shares with Blood+ Spoiler: A secret group plotting behind the shadows manufactures a serum from a supernatural being, by means of genetic engineering, that induces people to turn into monsters or creates monsters. And Makina's lone-wolf and rough-hearted attitudes shares many traits in common with the Saya of Blood, the Last Vampire, which was more evidenced in episode three; Makina relies on unconventional and unorthodox methods to dispose of the creatures.
