Light had the upper hand because he had the deathnote. It is hard to approach an oppenent knowing you could get killed anytime. Besides they don't know the rules of the deathnote. Plus light had misa to help him a second deathnote user.

In a way, both Light and L had their advantages. Although L did find a substantial amount of information about the means, ways, "necessities" of killing, Lights tracks were covered pretty well. Seeing that his father is in the actual investigation force, he would be the last to be suspected even by L's standards. I would have to give the advantage to L however, since his investigation was going as planned. Light had no name and face to go by and was slowly getting narrowed out. I wouldn't want to be in his position. :/
