he doesn't know of any other magicians in this world

will he expect loli rin to put up much of a fight? no, not especially after rin voluntarily let the bracelet's magic affect her. After that he got blinded which created an opening for the children to escape, and he could always go back to Caster for a new bracelet for easier capture anyway. Imagine rounding down like 10 children all by yourself while they are running away. Don't think Uryuu has the ability to do that. Yes he's a sick serial killer, but we don't know the extent of his physical abilities yet.
As a skilled serial killer, I'd expect him to do better than standing around and let loli Rin push stuff at him and grab his arm. I'd expect Caster to notice that his master broke his bracelet and show up. It makes zero sense to have loli Rin own him, and it does not happen in the light novel where she fittingly accomplished nothing.

This episode sure strayed from the dark style with a lighthearted episode with little Rin. Creepy at nighttime, but Ryunosuke doesn't seem to have anything capable of using magic. I wonder how was he was chosen to get Caster? Kariya did save Rin from those tentacle things. I thought F/Z was suppose to be dark and foreboding. The episode overall was okay, but misplaced.

And this is supposed to make an effective climax to the episode how, exactly? I read people's descriptions of how this played out differently in the book and I'm having some trouble imagining how it would have played out in a way that wouldn't have left me with the reaction "that's it?".

I'd expect him to do better... if he wasn't treating the encounter as a mere game. He got pwned by a combination of his own cockiness and inexperience. Also, the tentacle monster showing up kind of implies Caster noticed.

I'm aware. I've read the rest of the thread. But said thread is about the anime version of F/Z, so naturally that's what my criticism was directed towards. Can't speak on the original version of the events since I haven't read the novels. But obviously it does seem infinitely more in concordance with the tone and thematics of the series than the heavily adapted anime version.

If they'll cram the King's Feasts in one episode while THIS adventure was even shorter than that got added useless filler and inaccurate stuff, I'll be pissed off.
That's my main concern when it comes to episodes like this. Nothing is worse than when a studio wastes too much time "playing creative" and is thus left with not enough time to properly cover the actual canon portions of the series. So far, outside of this episode, ufotable seems to have done a good job with the pacing, so I can only hope they've got things under control and the upcoming story arc isn't rushed as a result of this overlong blunder.

I don't know this episode pacing was dreadful... :/ I had high hopes before it played.

I'm not convinced that this episode is going to have any impact on the pacing of the series as a whole. Generally you don't start a new arc mid-episode, so they were kind of stuck with using a full episode for the Rin mini-arc regardless of whether they stuck to the book or not.

I am still hopeful that we will have an epic episode next week at a good pace. But I will be very unhappy if the next episode feels cramped because they give Rin so much time to show off unnecessarily. In any case, we won't know until next week.

Alternatively, we could've rin successfully saved the kids, but got herself killed at the end.

blame Caster then :P
Uryuu clearing is trying out some cat-and-mouse fun, he didn't expect Rin to deal that much damage to him, even if it's temporary.

now the main question is, why is Caster so far away from his master in this episode.

Okay guys, the concern for ep's pacing is valid, but before that actually happens, let's not hate on this episode okay? Stop being the naysayers even before it happens. Who knows, Ufotable might be able to actually pull of a great episode in a vital one like the next one.
If ep11 does indeed got screwed up, then we can come back and blame this episode, before then, just chill.

Magical Girl Lyrical Rin.

Well, no, even if Rin's VA voiced a character involving another dark book. I was laughing at how Rin was kicking the Ryuunosuke's ass, but good thing Caster wasn't right them with him at the time.

Anyhow, Rin is a adorable and badass character that already has outdone her tree of a dad. Of course, the only problem is that this episode just feels out of place except to tell us that the Tohsaka's aren't really the best at being parents. 7/10

Even if we disregard the possibility of it resulting in a rushed episode 11, this episode was still rather flawed on its own merits, so I can "hate on it" all I want (which isn't the case either way, since I still thought it was decent overall). But yes, I'll only possibly blame it for the quality of the next episode's pacing when I actually see that one, which is why neither me nor anyone else was blaming it for that just yet, but merely discussing the possibility of it coming to happen. And in my case, discussing having a little more hope in ufotable than that (even if they disappointed me with their resorting to needless pandering for this one episode).

I thought the use of horror in this episode to be the best in the series thus far, the lighting and shading for Fuyuki at night really made it seem like you should question the sanity if anyone who actually wanted to live there, or at the very least go out after dark. Contrasting to last week where I felt the "bloody sneaker and retching" was too little to convey the horror of what Caster & Uryuu were doing, the first 2/3 of this episode had the taut suspense of a decent horror film.

Then Rin activated her Super Saiyan Magical Girl Powers and the feelings of "and now for something completely different..." with mood whiplash set in rather swiftly.

It was filler, but decent filler that gave Tokiomi and Kariya some badly needed characterization, loli pandering aside. Hoo boy the action and bodycount in the latter half of the series are probably going to be off the charts with every master and servant still standing.

Well if anything 3 eps is far more than enough to cover the season closer arc.

So...

Rather pointless to discuss the merits of the next episode using what we know from this one in this thread, since if you really knew anything about what the next episode was like you wouldn't be talking about it in this non-spoiler thread.

Anyhow, I feel that for it's own merits, the episode was actually fairly well-done. If I were to rate it separately from the rest of the series, it would've been somewhere around a 8 or a 9 due to how it was able to masterfully weave a standalone story arc with it's own resolution. However, as another episode for the Fate/Zero series, it's not that good since it feels like a complete tangent to the storyline and the character perspective doesn't really mesh with what's already been established. However, it does provide some much needed insight into Tokiomi and Kariya, the former which hasn't seen much action in the series and the latter which hasn't been seen much at all.

So, a 7 for the technical aspects.

Because the episode didn't make sense, that's why?

Or, he could just be away planning to convince 'Jeanne', like what he's been doing ever since he saw Saber, while Uryuu (who has no vested interest in her) was off doing what he normally does.

Here's what should've happened: Rin dies. Then at the end of the second season, Tokiomi wins, and gives up his wish for the Root to bring his daughter back to life. It would be a touching story of a father's love for his child.

Or maybe Kariya wins and makes some complicated wish that brings Rin back to life while saving Sakura (and gets him Aoi and cures his wormrot). It would be a triumphant story of love conquering all.

Or maybe Kiritsugu wins, and we cut to a scene of him with Irisviel, Maiya, Illya, Shirou, and Archer all congratulating him. Then they announce movies called End of Fate and Fate/Rebuild.

Or maybe Kotomine wins, and he wishes to switch bodies with Kiritsugu. So the Kiritsugu who raised Shirou was actually Kotomine, and the Kotomine in Fate Stay Night is Kiritsugu.
Kotomine: Saber never told you what happened to your father.
Shirou: She told me enough! She told me you killed him!
Kotomine: No. I am your father.
Shirou: NOOOOOOOO

I'm so sad we don't get to speculate wildly about the plot for this show.
