I actually started this series with the anime, I liked it quite a bit and it was one of the reasons I wanted to get the game. Managed to pass the point the anime was at pretty quickly and have since beaten the game, and I kinda find myself having a mixed opinion of the anime now.

To me, it feels like they've pretty much jumped the rails and smashed them beyond repair. Even if they explain away the whole hair color thing, there's still far too many changes (particularly Alicia's personality shift, which I personally despise) for it to resemble the game again.
Not that I don't understand changing things. After all, when you get down to it, Valkyria Chronicles doesn't have a huge amount of plot. You have to add and change things somewhere, particularly if you want to keep dramatic tension about Welkin and Alicia ending up together (it's obvious even at the start of the game, not that that really matters; it wasn't the focus, after all). I just object to the way that they're doing it. Personally, I think the manga is doing a great job of reinterpeting the game, and gives me what I really wanted out of VC in other media: expansion on the other characters. Probably the most apparent example of this is... Spoiler for VC Manga Volume 2:
tl;dr : The manga is doing a better job with its changes. |

That still doesn't make it a good adaptation. |

I like how the anime has taken an original direction, just so you know. If it were a complete copy of either the game or manga's storyline, it'd be a bore. Being original is what's making me watch this. I'm sure it'll still keep the essentials, if somewhat tweaked. |

Well, that and Isara looking like a fish, but that one isn't the writers fault. |

You've gotta wonder, if they do kill off Isara, who's going to control the Edelweiss? The character that does in the game hasn't made his appearance at all in the anime, so he probably won't appear at all.
Still, i can imagine all our reactions if they don't kill her off. Oh boy.
