FYI, the preview special version of Episode 1 and the regular broadcast version of Episode 1 are not exactly the same. The interview at the end of the preview special promised the broadcast version would "show what happens next." I also expect some of the preview version's content has been cut to make the regular version fit within it's time slot. The blurays will probably feature a definitive extended cut with content from both the preview special and regular broadcast versions of the episode -that's what was done with the first episode of Macross Frontier.

I like that the trance he went under actually distracted him so much that he got shot down. Just because it was a magical mecha naked people moment, all too common in mecha shows, doesn't mean there isn't a down side.

Now that I think about it, Frejya can probably use her powers for combat purposes. If you can send your opponents into mass scale hallucinations, they would be unable to defend themselves.

Spoiler for Screencap spoilers!:
It took me a second to realize that in that last picture/entire scene that it's a VF-171. Never be a mook in a VF-171. The most major change between the preview version and the actual airing episode was, as mentioned, the extra scene at the end. Along the way there's some extra visual polishing, mostly in texturing and shading (such as that police car), but you won't miss much if you just skip to the 20-24 minute mark. |

I will admit that the VF-171 can dance. Really nice to see a good rescue-and-escape using mostly battroid mode. I really hope the kid gets BrightSlapped into a good fighter pilot, rather than going the K-Fed way.
BTW I also dislike the ending cliffhanger. |

Hmm... i sort of hope he (at least initially) just gets dragooned into teaching the pilots to dance. Since he commented previously that Mirage's timing was off, it would be a way to put them into conflict without forcing her to play second fiddle to a genius pilot with an attitude problem. I just feel kind of sorry for her at this point, given that she's the only named character to take any damage in the first episode (by her own fault anyhow, given the tripping later on in the ep.); it feels like they're grooming her to be the 'normal' of the group.

I feel like the editing for this episode versus the NYE broadcast is a little cleaner. There wasn't a lot changed between the two, but it was enough that it felt like it transitioned more smoothly in some scenes. Also, the mecha have much nicer textures than before. No more weird, overly-smooth 3D model vibes~
I do like that the second half of episode 1 is much different than before, and uses both pre-released singles in full, rather than short cuts of each. Hayate in the VF-171 felt so much like Frontier, and his pilot sequence overall was really fun to watch~ I'm really anticipating the OP/ED sequences, though, because we get to hear new songs for those, IIRC. Hoping it's really cool!!

So yes, it was mostly the same as the preview episode, but still I'm sitting here with a huge, stupid grin on my face. Sure, the idol battle scenes don't make much sense, but who cares when it's so much fun. Seriously, Hayate is dancing in his mecha, it's so silly but also so stupidly awesome.
Bring on the dancing mecha and magical girl idol fighters, Macross. This is something only you can do! (Although I'm still a bit disappointed that the enemy is not a male idol group.) |

The live singing scene was... a bit awkward in general. While I did like that anime, it did remind me more of AKB0048 than I would expect.
Anyways, kinda surreal on the singing part, though the action was pretty good and the last parts of the episode caught my attention. Especially liked the dance evasion the robot did.
