1 ゼンツッパ 2316M 十段

I'm just going to say he's been extremely lucky to hit 10 dan.
His stats aren't all impressive though. His 4th place % is 21 which is still on the high side. An elite player should be able to keep it below 20. He's able to bomb a lot of 1st place though (30%).

You mean there are people that actually make it to 10 dan!? O_o

Yeesh, I wouldn't want to mess with that. I wish I knew Japanese so I could create an account and get rated XD (but then I'd probably be in a losing streak with my luck)

3 people are currently 十段.
ゼンツッパ is just so damn lucky and i'm quite envious of his rating.
According to ゼンツッパ's twitter, he's taking a break and he hope to continue his quest to tenhou status as early as next week.

3p is easier because there are more terrible players who just want to see big hands. It's just more casual and most people including myself don't care too much when playing. And due to the higher occurrence of them, there's more of an incentive to go on the offensive and end the game with some big hands. So people push their luck more and defend less. But that sometimes leads to much higher variance.

However, I'm pretty much stuck to playing that, since I automatically lose when I play 4p where I just watch other people win. 3p is just better, except when someone scores a tenho... lol@ my luck on this site.

I shouldn't have posted about getting lucky in 3p since the moment I hit 3dan...my luck turned to shit though I did some very stupid shit like randomly throw dora around I just didn't stand a chance regardless as the other two would tsumo big hands and keep dealing into each other, and trade pts til i'm dead.

edit: just won a consolation game, especially South 1st in the most unexpected way.

Big hands are more appreciative in 4-play... when my hand is in my pants... (oh wait)...

4-play... pants... get it? OK, I'll shut up now.

I have no idea what the hell he was thinking. I mean, you were obviously going for a honitsu, so he decides to discard the first hatsu, that late? Not only that, the last tile he kept, the 2p, did absolutely nothing for him. The best thing he could go for was a chanta, and keeping the 2p gets him away from that...

Indeed. He buried himself by hanging onto that Hatsu for so long.

Going back further. He discards a drawn 6-man when he has a 6-man already in his hand. Even further, by calling on the 1-sou, he severely limited his hand choices.

East 2-0: Rare chance for Chinroto (All terminals). Though 3-shanten before the first call. Don't ask why I ditch the 9-man (oh right, I kept an option for Toitoi as a back up). Had a closed kan too, could have called that.

I don't have Tenhou for Windows. So, I can't tell what that dead wall tile would have been.

Otherwise, just another mundane game.

Nice! That's the closest I've seen someone get that hand. I've gone for it in the past, but with no luck

The other 9 man is in the dead wall and not drawable.
If you kanned, you would have gotten the chun.

URA-DORA 8!? What the Akagibullshit!?

I have a question! How do you play safe against someone who is trying to ninja their hand by not riiching. I can't seem to tell if someone's in tempi or not unless they do something blatant (like discard a red five).

I just tend to feel that out - by being suspicious of the others. Of course, an answer like that isn't going to help much. XD

Though, in a sense, examine your own actions when you are in tenpai - or close to it. What do you do?

Common pattern: discarding your drawn tiles, because yer searching for that "one" particular tile.

OR

Y'happen to discard a particular suit - after discarding all the others. i.e. discarding sou and man tiles - then suddenly a pin is discarded.

Bunch of signs like that. Anyone else care to elaborate?

If they are discarding their tiles without re-arranging their hands after turn 6, it's easy to tell they are in tenpai. But you won't know whether they have a big hand or not. Just look at your hand and if it's a shit hand, they probably have a better hand.
If you got all the dora tiles, you might as well try to play the hand and even if you lose, it will likely be a small loss. In some cases, they could end up with a big hand without using dora tiles, most commonly yakuman hands.

It was not luck, not entirely anyway. I placed those two Chun there, which was why I took the risk in swapping the 4 Man for the Nan I discarded on my first turn. I wasn't sure which tile to swap, but Alvin (jokingly?) suggested the 4 Man, and I agreed it was a good if uncomfortable idea because it opened up the chance for two more han as part of a closed Chanta. It was uncomfortable because...well, would most people put a winning tile in the dead wall, knowing there's only a maximum of seven could potentially come out?

It's impossible to tell when you're up against a player you've rarely/never played before and they get an early Tenpai.

If you know the player, you can look for playing style tells, if the player isn't that serious about mahjong the tells would be reliable. I like to screw with my playing style randomly though, so it won't work for all players.

For mid-game and end-game, read the discards to see what someone is aiming for. Imbalances in the discards are a great way of forecasting when someone is in Tenpai, even without having to look at their Tsumokiris. If you don't see a haku, hatsu or chun out in the open (either called or discarded) by mid-game, it wouldn't hurt to give up on the round. Simples discards are an obvious sign for Kokushi, double Tsu Ii Men from a single player strongly hints of Chin Itsu.

Only strong gambling instincts can feel out someone getting a big starting hand anywhere between 3 - 1 Shan Ten. Those kinds of things are very hard to avoid if the player doesn't Riichi. Strangely, it seems really common in the Upper Dan and (supposedly) Phoenix Rooms.
