Well, I've seen SMLA and the Boogiepop Phantom live action thingy, and It's going to take an awful lot to motivate me to explore the area any further. SMLA was awful of course, but I was expecting that. What is far more significant, (albeit also expected) is that the live-action Boogiepop was a bit pathetic. The anime is of course fantastic, but the dominant thoughts when watching the live action were of the type "Sapphire and Steel does this sort of thing so much better."

As a general rule, British television is the best in the world, with the field of animation being a very notable exception. I see no evidence that there's another exception from what I've seen. We do have really good live-action television over here, and I suspect that's the difference. Though if someone has seen things like the Second Coming and can identify something that can stand amongst them, then I'll gladly give the field another shot.

Talking about dorama makes me feel old since I was a big fan in the 90s.

The last dorama I watched was Hero, which was pretty average.

I recommand some of these classics..
  • Asunaro Hakusho (Asunaro White Paper)
  • Hitotsu Yane No Shita (Under One Roof) 1 & 2
  • Tokyo Love Story
  • Kamisama, Mou Sukoshi Dake (God, Please Give Me More Time)
  • Love Generation
  • Majo No Jouken (A Witches' Condition)
  • Long Vacation
  • Beach Boys

I avoid dorama based off manga/anime since 90% of them are really bad such as Psychometrer Eiji, Kindaichi Shounen No Jikenbo, Shota No Sushi, the female GTO version, etc.

Due to their short length, the Japanese probably produce close to 40 series per year?

With that kind of production rate, there's bound to be some series that are sub-standard. At the same time, there will be some that will shine and stand out from the rest. Its not fair to judge their standard by just a couple of show. To add, I agree with Bleed Kaga that most anime/manga-to-live-action drama are not up to standards, GTO is an exception. I am hoping for a Kimi ga Nozomu Eien LA, since its style is most akin to those soap dorama classics.

Bleed Kaga has a good list there. Other classics like Ice World and the Heaven's Coin series are good too.

just like everyone is saying, watch GTO LA. it's the best i've seen. i seemed to have liked the break from the usual hours of animation. the movie was bad, the special wasn't too good either(at least it had more to do with the LA story than the movie)

I just watched Episode 3 of Good Luck, and it was great. I love this series so much I'm grinning from ear to ear. And the episode 4 preview had me going OMG I NEED THE NEXT EPISODE NOW! Its official, JDrama has surpassed anime in my eyes

Does anyone know anything about a Korean Comedy called "Sex is Zero"? I stumbled accross a French (I think) bittorrent site and they had it on there with a few screen shots. I got curious and looked around some more and found this review on aznfilms.com

"You cannot believe how good this film really is. Korea's rehash of the cult-classic The Last American Virgin, Sex is Zero is one of the best comedies to ever come out of Korea. You can quote us on that. Looking at the cover and combined with the silly title, you'd think that the film is some poor attempt at slapstick humor. It is not. It has tons of American Pie teenage sex comedy, gross-out Beavis and Butthead styled silliness with a touch of romance and even a great story to boot. Sex is Zero is nothing we've come to expect and it has taken our staff reviewers completely by storm. It is funny as hell. There are films where you just smirk every now and then and then there are others that have you laughing so hard you just gag to catch your breathe. Sex is Zero is one of those. The comedy is outrageous and the romance is touching as can be. This film is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by the staff of AznFilms.com. We know our review is rather brief, but to give you any more insights on the comedy or the story would really ruin it. It's one of those films where the audience must experience it themselves. Again, we can't emphasize enough how insanely funny this film is. It's like watching a cross between Jackass and American Pie, except the comedy is about 10 times more potent."

I can't find it in english anywhere, so I was wondering if anyone here knew anything about it. I sounds pretty interesting.

Watched GTO (TV+Special+Movie), Summer Snow and Hito ni Yasashiku, and am watching SMLA. I'm surprised that nobody mentioned Hito ni Yasashiku, which IMO is even better than GTO and Summer Snow.

I'm interested in it too. Maybe there is an IRC channel? Hopefully there are some BT files, but I'm not getting my hopes up. Well if you find it post it here, and I'll do the same.

Gee, as a fan of Stingray the original Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet (Fireball XL-5 even!), I have to take VERY strong exception to the implication that the British are incapable of animation that doesn't stand up to the best in the world.

Saw this subbed in English, liked it a lot. It was a while ago, can't point you to any torrents or whatnot, sorry.

and yeah I watch jdrama every once in a while... it's better than the basic network offerings on American TV but some of the cable-only stuff in America is very good.

I'm also d/l Virgin Road right now. Summer Snow IS good as everybody said. I just saw Bus Stop, a new release by JTV , and this one is promising. I already like the characters and the plot will get you hooked.

Yes I agree. I watched episode 4 of Summer Snow today and I think it gets better with every episode.

I saw episode 1 of Bus Stop today as well. I found it interesting, because unlike the other drama's I've watched (GTO Live, Beautiful Life, Good Luck, Summer Snow), the main character isn't a cool young man. He's kind of.....a simple-minded idiot to be frank And the main female role is a cocky business woman who could very well be called a bitch. Nevertheless, it was interesting enough to get me to watch the 2nd episode when it comes out. Oh, and the main character's little sister (19 years old) is すっごくかわいい!

I know, the main character is funny as hell. Its like his love is so hopeless that you can't help but cheer for him. Bus Stop is really different from the other jdorama I've seen. I can't wait for more. Regarding Virgin Road, I saw 2 eps. and d/l the 3rd one and I find it dragging a bit. I hope it gets better which I heard that it will but we'll see.

I'm thinking about watching that next, but I'm going to wait at least until I finish Summer Snow I think. Let me know if it gets better.

Also for those who have seen these dramas, I'd like to hear ratings and opinions on them

- A Step Into the Past
- Bright Girl
- Hello Morning
- Long Vacation
- Love & Fight
- Meteor Garden 2
- Monkey King (lol, I wonder what this one is about)
- Take My Word For It
- Young Father

Are there any other torrent sites/subbing groups that do J-Dramas other than Japan-TV?

Also, I'm d/ling Summer Snow DVD Ep 7 right now and there are 21 leechers and no seeds. If anyone can help out, that would be great よろしくお願いしますね

GTO the series (live action) was very good, in fact I have never watched the Anime series yet.. I thought the Special was just as good as the series as well. I was happy too see it cuz i wasnt ready for the show to be over yet (I still miss Onizuka!!). Im happy they had a movie as well.. so i could see onizuka again, that was a plus, but i didnt really like the movie either, i was very dissapoint to not see any of the old students or Ms. Fuyutsuji.. in fact iw as curious if he was still with her because he mentions to be single in the movie.. AAhh im getting sad now, would be really nice if they could do another series!! LoL.. i also heard that he married the girl who played Fuyutsuki in real life..

I'm glad somebody brought this thread back up I finished watching Summer Snow on Friday. And man...(BIG SPOILER! Don't read unless you've watched the entire series!)

Spoiler:

I think I'm going to start watching Virgin Road next. Also there was a new series released by Japan-TV called koukou_kyoushi_2003_dvd_ep01_[jtv].avi. I watched it and it seems alright. Its about a really (mathematically) smart guy who seems to be dying of some sickness, and a beautiful Japanese high school girl. Hopefully it turns into something special.

KouKou Kyoushi is really good and I have a big crush on Aya Ueto who plays Hina. The story is not original but the way they did it seems fresh enough. I'm looking forward for more. I'm also looking forward for Gokusen Live Action after hearing that it is better than GTO Live, so they say. Roots, I told you you'd like Summer Snow but it did mess you up.
