What is "music" to you?

What is "music" to you?

Is it a story with background beats(most often heard in Country music)?

Is it a bunch of punk rockers being rebelous and saying a million curse words?

Is it the melody alone that makes you feel good?

There are many more I can think of, but I really don't feel like typing for half an hour. Just post in how you feel, alright?

Here is my view on music that I like. Music has to have a strong beat and great melody that can get me amped. By amped I mean that I feel my aura tingling and the feeling that I could lift a 500LB rock with one arm(my very soul is being amplified). 95% of music I hear sucks. I notice that alot of new rock bands COPY the same guitar and drum beats from old rock bands. I don't like "singers" in general. There are some exceptions, but sometimes I listen to a song and I start to get amped, but some retard starts trying to sing and ruins the whole song.

When I go to a few of my friends houses I listen to what they're playing (bands like Link'in Park), and as I listen I can always point out errors that screw the songs up or know they copied a guitar/drum beat.

As for anime music(Yes, I have to mention this because I realize that i'm offtopic. If need be, move this to general chat plz). It's alright(in general). Alot of anime fight BGM get me amped. As for the japanese music itself, I like alot of the insturmental playing, but since I don't speak japanese it kinda screws it up for me. ^_^'

Your turn...

For me, art is the tender balance between chaos and order. Thus, music is the aural analogue of that. I like to have a nice structure in music, so things like measures, some repetitions make the music sound well. However, it's the things that surprise me in music that makes one song stand out above other songs.

Music is to me has to fullfill a couple of demands:
- It has to contain instruments, not a computer!
- It has to be able to perform live.

Most of the pop music these days is made to make money, so it is often enhanced using a computer. I don't call that music.

So basically you don't consider video game music actual music because it doesn't have real instruments? A lot of music these days are performed by computer, because performers are expensive. Why hire performers for hundreds or thousands of dollars when you can buy a synth package that costs only a couple hundred dollars? While major players in the movie industry can afford an orchestra, most of the players with less budgets would have to resort to computerizing an orchestra, which to many people doesn't sound much different, especially if there's a lot more going on in the movie than just the music. As society becomes more technological, we may see continued evolution of music away from traditional instruments to digital instruments that are either played by a person or by a computer.
I do agree that a lot of pop music is pretty crappy. While sometimes the composition is interesting, a lot of times the singer can't sing, so the creator has to "nudge" the pitch into an acceptable range so that the singer sings on pitch.

A performer aint expensive, just when you hire known performers.
And an orchestra? were does it say that when you are trying to make music you need an orchestra?
And when the creator has to "nudge", you cant call it singing either
This is all because of the commercialisation (correct english?)

...As society becomes more technological, we may see continued evolution of music away from traditional instruments to digital instruments that are either played by a person or by a computer. ...

Digital instruments are instruments but performed by a computer... no thats not music.
You have to make music, not just click some buttons on your pc screen.

And when I say that I can't call sometime music, doesn't mean I don't like it

When you have to pay people to record an instrument, you pay them by the hour usually. Plus, you'll need to coordinate studio time and that costs money, unless you own a studio. You'd also need audio engineers to make sure the sound comes out okay during the recording. Basically a lot of labor fees you'd have to pay.

Are you saying that music should be performance oriented and not composition oriented? Personally, as long as it is performed correctly, I don't find the performance aspect that amazing. What I do find amazing is the way the composer stitches together the musical elements to create a work of art. My take is... who do you consider more of an artist, the guy who designs the ceiling of a cathedral or the painters he hired to paint it? etc.

Hmmm, I don't really mind if people is played with actual insturments or not. Think of it this way: The way you play a horn is blowing and pressing buttons. A computer is the samething, your pressing a button, but the difference is that you don't have to blow and with a computer you can screw with the sounds to achieve a great beat.

Music is rhythm to me. I like music with a beat. I don't mind whether it is synthesized or not. I don't like how most pop artists "enhance" their voices, but I don't mind intentionally synthesized voices [ie Techno].
My prefered genres are Classical, Trance, European, and Alternative.
I don't like country or heavy rock.

For me, music is a reminder or conjurer of emotion. Doesn't matter if it's computer or instuments, doesn't matter what genre, doesn't matter if I can understand the lyrics. If it reminds me of something good, or makes me feel good on it's own, I like it.

I like a lot of the songs I hear in anime because they remind me of the show. The characters, the things that happened, the feelings it gave me. It's not just anime, though. A song on the radio can remind me of something that happened to me and I'll like the song because of it.

It's corny and all that, but that's the way it is.

Oh yeah. I also see music as a sign of the times. I discovered this while doing a paper comparing classical and baroque music. Whoever knows music history will probably agree with me. I mean, look at modern music...

for me music preferences (and sexual preferences) are completly random. In general, music is sounds that humans use to entertain. That means that for me, Britney Spears makes music, which of course doesn't mean i like it, actually i hate it.

But as i said its random because musical tastes depend mostly IMO on where and when you were raised, for example in africa the use a different scale ( i think 5 scales while in the west we use 8, i don't remember) so when we hear their music, it sounds horrible and untunned, while they consider our music to be the one which is untunned. The same thing happens with ancient music from other cultures ( China, japan, India). It all comes down to what type of "training" your ear had, i mean, what music you were raised with in your childhood.

The same thing with sexual preferences. If we were born in the middle ages, probably people wouldn't consider jeniffer lopez or Nicole Kidman as beautiful or atractive as they are considered today

sorry for the bad english

I disagree with that. As I grew up I listen to music that was around me. My dad is a hardcore heavy metal rocker, and my mom loves country music. As for my friends, they'd either listen to rap or alternative rock. I always felt left out. At one point I remember telling my mom that I hate music, because the only music I knew of is what I heard from friends and family. Then one day, I found "my" type of music, and music has changed my life ever since.

The exact same thing happened to me!!! Here in Colombia you hear vallenato EVERYWHERE!! and i hate it!!! my dad hears lots of salsa and my mom music from the 60's, and as you felt left out, i felt left out too until i found "my" music. But I still believe the enviroment plays a huge role in music taste, whether is for the music you like or the music you dislike. let me quote TronDD

I completly agree with TronDD. when i hear music from the 80's it instantaneously transports me back to my childhood. My point is that the music you hear in your childhood is a huge influence on the music you would like in the future.

If you were born somewhere else with different parents, i think that your tastes in music would be completly different! of course my crazy theory probably cannot be proved right anyway, but i still believe its true.

Godd music to me is hard beats, good bass, nice melody. Often also a good voice, with good text.
(Trance, Techno, Metal - Nightwish, Blank & Jones, Cosmic Gate, In Flames, some Millencolin songs(greener grass etc))

I dont care if its made with the help of a computer(not only) or just by intruments, as long as it sounds good.

Music is my universal language. Even if I can't understand the lyrics (especially non-English music like anime), the emotions can be felt through the melody or through the power of the singer.

Music is a universal language. However, the mood of the song is not always what it seems.
ie I feel sorry for the foreigner who think's Everclear's "Wonderful" is a happy song.

Music is something that strengthens emotions to me. Therefore I like(d) a lot. Good havy rock to blow of some steam, some happy music to make me feel like i'm flying, some sweet music to remember good times. The only thing i hate is when artists screw up a good old song. One of the worst was a dutch project: Madhouse, what they did was that they took a madonna song and added the beat of another artist. That pissed me off.

As most people have said, music IS an emotion. It can conjure, remind, and purge any emotion. I can't say I have a favorite genre, I love vocal trance, ambient, and funk, but I don't have a favorite. I do have favorite song though, Duvet, the opening to Serial Experiments Lain. I don't know exactly what it is about the song, but no matter what mood I'm in, it always makes me feel better. Some of my favorite bands are Coldplay, The Doors, but I love Pink Floyd. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that music is an emotion, language, and most of all, a happy drug.

What i think music stands for

music to many of us stands for noise.

but to me music is more off a story, but this story needs no words, but just the sounds of the flute and the strings of numerous instruments vibrating, creating a peaceful and wonderful sound of life.

music is something that we are all born with, it contains our feelings and our thoughts. some contain life storys, and past experiences, music is a history of emotions. a long story which has everybodys emotions.

to me music can calm my killer instinct.

in school my dark and devil like self would rise, whenever something happans, even the slightest, insult can result into someone having their hands nailed to the wall with a pair of sccisors.

but to calm my self i bring my cd player into school, with music that can affect my anger, placing it back into the weak cage, that god gave me.

to me music is a gift that we were given. and this gift can change a person, even a devil like me.
