My question is how in the hell were they able to fit through an Oyashio type sub through the gate? Hypothetically the diameter of the Oyashio is 8.9 m while the the C-1 overall height is 9.9 m so you may be able to squeeze it through if you remove the conning tower but come on you can't expect to remove it and place it back again without problems. |

While Itami, Rory and the others won't be the main focus, it won't mean that they won't appear. They'll be there in a limited capacity.
We've already seen the Empire and the lands they ruled but the thing is, its only a small part of a very larger world. I get the feeling the second season would be akin to subnautica. |

The military jargon Itami's platoon uses is even better than in the sub, at least for a US viewer. They actually sound like soldiers, using terms such as wash rack after returning from the field, and referring to the Sergeant Major as Top.

It actually makes since they he should focus on the Naval side of the military in JSDF as it is the one Division of the JSDF that was not explored in the first series. they could not as it was in the middle of tokyo so they cant transport naval vehicles their.
Japan has a long history of being proud of it's navy as it was it's primary means of defense and main military force being an island nation after all. So it is not suprising it will focus on it next. That is also why you see a lot of series based on ships too. For those asking as to how they managed to get a submarine their, the anwser is simple. When the Gate Closed the JSDF were already planning measures to control opening gates between them. Lelei at the time could open the gates herself although only for a short time and about the size of a person. With all those years of training it would be simple now to open a large gate and control where it will open. |

in any case, the book is out, with it also the test read chapter 1 on the official website, there are pictures/description of the new characters and an enlarge map with new landmass revealed. Spoiler for chapter 1:

this is subject to correction from native speaker.
according to reviews, it is for certain that Itami and his 5 harem girls did not appear in book 1, (Lelei was mentioned by name.) maybe later volume. just a very quick low down on the 8 characters, start from the top left. 1. Tokushima Hajime: petty officer 2nd class, JMSDF Kitashio’s cook. 2. Etajima Goro: captain, JMSDF special region intel boss, whom first appears in Gate season 1. 3. Primera luna Agion: princess of Tinae, nickname “Tinae’s jewel of blue sea”. “drunken princess”. 4. Shura no Arch: captain of pirate ship Arch, friend of Primera. 5. Odette ze Negula: wing species? guardian of warship Odell, friend of Primera. 6. Shamrock ha Elixir: one of Tinae’s ruling “ten members commitee”, ambitious politician. 7. Isla de Pinos: of a demi human race Lennon with eye on forehead, Shamrock’s secretary. 8. Caipirinha em Ruyter: Tinae candidate captain of warship Odell. with the decline of the Avian Empire, which used to rule over the Avian sea, the 7 islands of Tinae, Javiá, Ubulla, Manuham, Seiraf, Sarandip, and Routerbagga become independent. currently the sea traffic lanes in Avian sea are infested with pirates, In order to overcome that situation, Tinae which is inferior in military power will try to obtain the help of the Seiraf navy on the condition of Primera’s marriage, however, the region are fulled with political intrigue such as the 7 islands unification faction and the empire revival faction. JMSDF Kitashio which is under order to rescue a Chinese American reporter, who secretly penetrate the region and end up in the slave system, is soon embroiled in the chaotic ocean.

500 pages, took me a couple of days just to browse through, first impression and essentials:
— Itami and his 5 harem girls did not appear in book 1. -- two names from season 1 were mention in passing, Lelei's explosive magic and Kato as map consultant to JMSDF. — timeline appears to be 4 years after gaiden 4, nothing is said how JMSDF gets her submarine to the other side. — and this is not the only boat, they previously sent in an older model sub and it was almost sunk by the armor whale, thus they send in the newer model sub. — it is because the armor whale length about 50-60 meters, can dive to thousands of meters depth, making speed at 12 knots, has extra thick exoskeleton skins, and can shoot air bubble wrapped supercavitating teeth at enemy, each around 6 meter long and 50cm thick and speed at supersonic 1500km/h, and oh yeah they are known to travel in pack, put holes in wooden boats bottom so they can feed off the falling sailors. — the heroes went through the entire book without firing a shot. — instead what this book has is espionage, political intrigue, double-cross, mutiny, sailing age sea battle, monster attacks, and gourmet diplomacy. — Tokushima, the supposed lead of the story, has a serious personality which is totally opposite from Itami, a son of master chef, he was rated zero star by review because he made perfect dishes without personality like a robot, so he joins the JMSDF to gain more experiences in life, what is similar to Itami is how he attracts female species without even trying, Primera and Odette, two of the three lead females probably will fall for him in later story since he already save their lives once. — Etajima, the intelligence boss, is a classic sail otaku (so he knows what to do on a sail boat) with good judgment in strategy and decision, Shura the pirate is so impressed that she though he was the captain of Kitashio. — Primera, the princess, has her nickname for a second personality while getting drunk, since she was raised as a royalty she enjoys gourmet food. As the last princess she was deems as a symbol of the old empire, thus the target of assassination and kidnapping. — Odette, the bird girl of the Monarch wing species, can fly higher and see farther than others, thus her species were made ship’s guide/guardian (sort of like a household’s witch) by giving weather/wind reports. Odette is inherently shy, but can talk to Tokushima since introduce to him through his food. — Shura, a “good” pirate with a sense of justice, she hunts down the bad pirates and protect the civilians but does not belong to the military (thus a pirate in name.) — Shamrock, the young ambitious politician, even if he is on the nation’s ruling “ten members committee”, he bemoans the fact he is the youngest and least powerful one, and always plotting how to get ahead without waiting for the 9 members before him to die of old age. he has many hidden agendas. — the story started by jumping into action and ended with no afterward developments, etc. probably have to wait for book 2 for reactions/explanation. — in author’s words later volumes will involve JMSDF surface ships and airplanes. — one thing I noted: the Kitashio’s captain name is Kurokawa, and in book 5 of season 1 Mari Kurokawa mentions her father is a submarine captain in JMSDF. no idea if they are the same person or not.

you do realize that if they sell both novel and LN at the same time then nobody is gonna buy the more expensive novel? just like western’s hard bound and paperback release, there will always be a delay of some certain times before they release the cheaper version,
as to how long? who knows, weight anchor is only out what, a month ago? my best guess is book 1 LN will be out the same time book 2 novel is available, and book 2 LN the same time book 3 novel, etc. from the experience of season 1 anywhere from half a year to 2 years?

Bunkobon (文庫本) the equivalent of a paperback will not be published for sometime. The publisher are publishing the Hardcovers first for the enthusiasts and then publish the paperbacks to sell more if the novel gains popularity. The interesting part is most Light novel publishers jumps in from the Bunkobon type from the start and skips the Hardcover version because they know most readers will only pick up the Bunkobon versions since for the readers, Light novel is just light reading material thus the naming Light Novel. |

I knew that it didn't make sense to release the novel and the light novel together! Because for most people it doesn't\wouldn't make sense to buy the novel which is more expensive if the light novel is\was out, the light novel also has the bonus of images to illustrate a few scenes! But since i don't speak nihongo i couldn't confirm this by myself and other people keep saying that they were releasing the 2 season of the light novel together with the novel, so that's why i asked! So before responding to these people telling that they are wrong, i had to be certain. Quote:
