Well, after the self-relieving ritual, the empathy and/or sympathy for the character come afterwards. Or... you've just read too much of Cyclone's Nanoha that you finally come to realize how cliche it was because of its repetitive cycle of women abuse. Or maybe it's just an opinion of yours.

It's more about the art actually. For some reason I just can't feel... anything about Cyclone's art of Nanoha, even though it's so similar to the 'real' Nanoha. I don't understand why either. It was like this even from the beginning.
