I saw the first episode on Hulu today

Sakidio wakes up in a strange world with pieces seperated in what looks like some sort of fragmented world. He also finds a girl named Kaeru there although she's dead. It seems the first episode has a lot of thoughts going through his head, trying to figure out what to do. The people he encountered were also pretty strange.

Sakaido is apparently a "briliant detective" trying to learn the way of the world. Something I noticed about him is how he analyzes almost everything and constantly trying to learn. The most interesting part of the show is the "fragmented world" imo. Feels like this anime has a lot of strange content going on including the criminal he was tailing. So I suppose this is more of a science fiction thriller/detective series. Felt like this anime is trying a lot to have an identity of its own so I'm curious to see where it's going.

Out of all the premieres I've seen this season, this one really stood out. This has all the makings of a really great mystery/detective anime.

The show offers yet another approach to futuristic crime solving, where detectives can dive into a killer's ID (there's a lot of wordplays here, explained in the episode) to solve crime. Each criminal's well is going to be different, and if they're anything like the first one, they should be visually very interesting.

Regarding the MC, what I got is that his daughter was murdered and he got revenge. They said only a killer can dive into a well, and this explains why he's locked up. Kaeru is apparently just part of the system, a feature that helps him remember his purpose and give him incentive. I totally thought she was his girlfriend or something like that and he was trying to solve her murder.

In many ways, this reminded me of Pyscho Pass, especially with the female rookie field agent who turned out to be really badass. The mushi whatever work a bit like dominators, too.

Heh, it turns out there was a good reason for that. His voice fits his current appearance a lot better.

Hmm, it was kinda flashy, but in other words, it is a futuristic detective thing? The police use some head scanner to find the criminals, and the protagonist is their ace of sorts.
And the protagonist has some problems with this imaginary girl that dies all the time.

Too early to tell where it plans to end, but not bad so far.

And here I spent most of the first episode thinking that the MC's voice was unfitting, but there was quite a good reason for that. He also seems to quite the cynical guy, considering how he casually drops the fact that he got four criminals to commit suicide. Can't say I blame him though, considering the fact that he still doesn't seem to have gotten over his daughter's death.

Another thing I liked about these first two episodes is that they've already established there is a big bad. This will make the cases more interesting since they'll probably all be linked to him.

Also I find Kaeru quite suspicious. It's unlikely that the fact she's always there as a dead body is just an arbitrary symbol for the committed crime.

I'm not quite sure if they tried with other divers and if she always appears in the same fashion regardless of who sees her. If that's the case it's probably something closely related to the truth behind the Mizuhanome system.


Anyway this anime really seems promising, I'm very interested in seeing on how it will progress.

I don't mean to single ID out, because it's just the latest example. And it was fairly interesting (although using the John Walker & Sons whisky icon almost verbatim made me ROFL). But anime sci-fi has gotten so self-serious and pretentious, so in love with the ridiculous mumbo-jumbo it makes up. Why is that? Stuff like Kanata no Astra and Planet With is so refreshing because it's so unpretentious and direct.

I haven't watched ID yet but from my understanding Blade Runner was a huge historical influence on Anime sci-fi during its "Cyberpunk phase" so I imagine it would have something to do with that.

Blade Runner came out a long time ago (and nobody cared about the sequel). I don't doubt it was influential but I don't see it as the root cause of something that's really exploded in the past few years.

I might speculate the popularity of Gen's work has something to do with it, but the problem is he's better at it than most of the people who copy him. And even Gen's stuff usually starts to seem pretentious and self-important after a while.

I cared about the sequel. The ending still makes me cry...

I don't think anything from Gen has ever come across as pretentious and self important except Aldnoah.Zero which he apparently only had a passing involvement in, so we're on different wavelengths here.

I don't know much about the screenwriter for ID but I'm willing to bet his background as a novelist plays a certain role there anyway.

Well I don't really see anything pretentious in this anime so far.

And the fact it has a serious tone isn't really a bad thing.

Besides why bringing up Gen Urobuchi when there's plenty of such examples in the past? Just think of Ghost in the Shell or Jin Roh.

Or think of Texhnolyze or Ergo Proxy, now those are pretentious in my opinion.

I agree there was too much mumbo-jumbo but I wouldn't call the show pretentious. The storytelling was rather straightforward.

Well I just watched it now, and for the record I wouldn't call it pretentious either but I did feel like it came close

And I guess I must be dumb or something because I never did figure out why Inspector Gadget's elbow was missing. Did anyone else figure that out?

It wasn't missing on the second world, so it's something that was part of that particular serial killer's mind. Everything and everyone was missing something in that world with the only exception of Kaeru. During the second episode they speculate that that was due to the fact the Killer's mind is missing something.

For Sakaido that was a pretty convenient part to miss as it allowed him to cross and close the gaps of that world, but it probably wasn't by chance as he himself speculates so. It seems that the mizuhanome system works under some kind of logic that the protagonists themselves don't fully grasp.

Right now I can only speculate that the system has a mind of its own, otherwise Kaeru wouldn't appear in every reconstruction.

I think the system is the real problem.

The investigators have to be killers themselves. Our MC is in a max security room just like Hannibal Lecter. Kaeru looks like his daughter or wife which can't be a coincidence.

Kaeru doesn't look like the girl on his pictures.

The biggest mystery right now is who designed that system and why the team doesn't fully understand how it works. Kaeru is most likely related to the creator, not the MC.
