Dang... I don’t know what I feel about the anime. It was nice to see the characters back, and animation was pretty decent, but something was still missing and underwhelming about the final fight.

But still a disaster none the less.
I guess slightly better than Housjin Engi now? But still worse than Sareryu.

Not saying Sareryu isn't a disaster too.

Well after seeing the ending and thinking back over all of it, I am left with only one thought. "That was all kind of silly."

And thus the story ended and the truth has come to light. I'll just write a short conclusion about the whole plot of the show, just to make some things more clear to anime-only viewers. Hopefully I can make some more people interested a bit more to this franchise.

The whole plot of this story is about a god, Mercurius, who really wants to die but cannot accept any ending other than in the hands of the goddess Marie. This god basically turned the universe into a stage play of his assisted suicide.

To make matters worse, his suicidal desire actually manifested a being that will inevitably bring his demise, his apoptosis, Reinhard. Even though Mercurius knew this, he can't help but feel attracted to Reinhard and even regards him as friend. As his host's apoptosis, Reinhard cannot lose against Mercurius. Reinhard will actually continue to come back to life as long as Mercurius is alive. But, neither can win against the other so this will always result in mutual destruction in every iteration, and doom the universe to oblivion in the process. Mercurius, unable to accept this ending will emanate his desire ("I won't accept this ending") and restart the universe, and that's why his law is called Eternal Recurrence.

Marie is actually already a god since she 'died' at the guillotine, that's why she's not affected by Eternal Recurrence. However, to Mercurius' dismay, her desire is oriented inwards, towards herself, thus she doesn't Emanate to replace Mercurius' law. Mercurius' plan is to 'nudge' her desire to emanate outwards, so she can finally replace his law and put an end to his life.

However, at the end you can see that Ren still exists as a god even though Marie became the new god. This is because Marie's emanated desire is "to embrace everything", and thus it added a new effect of allowing multiple gods to co-exist. Mercurius actually still exists as a god but is content with this outcome so he's docile. And since Mercurius exists, Reinhard also exists though he's kind of "sealed" because he has reincarnated (another effect of Marie's law, which is actually called Karmic Reincarnation) and doesn't remember his previous life nor his true desire.

Yes, this is all kinds of silly, but hopefully you can also see why a lot of people think Masada, the author, is the god of the chuunibyou genre.

Thanks, that cleared quite a few things up for me. I'm still confused about some stuff, like Isaak's role in the story, and why Reinhard didn't consider him his son (was it because it was the Priest Riza had sex with?).

Reinhard's castle is his Briah (or "creation"), which is a manifestation of his desire, but Briah normally cannot be deployed for too long since it consumes stocked souls very fast. Isaak's role is to act as the "core" of Reinhard's castle, maintaining the souls within it indefinitely. Thus Reinhard's castle achieved pseudo-emanation where it is actually a separate universe from Mercurius' but it still doesn't envelop the whole world.

Reinhard didn't consider Isaak his son because he really doesn't know. Riza had sex with Reinhard's body during a period when he's for all intents and purposes, a corpse. Reinhard needed to exit the stage of WW2 so he can do his LDO stuff fully in secret. He staged his death, but this plan included him being in the morgue as an actual corpse and Riza used that opportunity to have Isaak and Johann. Remember, Riza's power manifested as corpse manipulation.

Thanks again. I didn't think Reinhard truly didn't know. I thought he had another reason for not accepting Isaak, like the fact it wasn't really him that conceived him in this case.

But after everything Mercurius taught him, did he seriously have no inkling at all that Mercurius was the God behind everything before that. Who else can have such detailed knowledge of the whole picture...

I just reread the final scene in normal Rea Route. Apparently the sensory Mercurius actually doesn't know he himself is the Throne God right until the very final battle. So I guess even if sensory Mercurius is always in the state of experiencing De Javu, he doesn't actually know the future.
edit: oh wait, I misunderstand. It's not like he doesn't know he is Throne God, he doesn't know what exactly he is emanating. He doesn't remember his true desire that ascended him to the Throne.

In the anime, sensory Mercurius and Throne Mercurius appears almost seamlessly from one scene to another, like that last scene where Mercurius on the beach was rejected by Marie and then showing the Throne Mercurius disappearing. Maybe things like those made them appear to be the same in the anime.

On a side note for anime viewers, "sensory" is what Throne Gods normally use to interact physically within the universe. You can think of it like an avatar of some sort, though the sensory is for the most part acting independently. For example, the loli Marie that appeared in the last episode is Throne Marie's sensory.

Kemono-dono was all "Ah YOU were the one my destructive love was meant to embrace all along Karl!" when he sees Throne Mercurius and instinctively knows that's his entire purpose of existing, yet prior to this he had shown no inkling of suspicion that Mercurius is something this important to him....especially driven home by that chess scene in the anime where Mercurius explains the general picture to him and he shows no sign of suspicion towards Mercurius. Then again, that could simply be due to his Apoptosis nature being meant to fully manifest when he encounters the Throne Mercurius
