They've already done so in the previous game, ACE3.
The RX-78 and another mecha from King Gainer were not able to fly, so they could only do jumps. The same system would be implementable for the Arbalest and the early knightmare frames(if they are planned to be playable) if needed.

That's from the G-UNIT story. They're called D-Units, mobile dolls made from old Leo parts attached with cannons. Basically a cheap way to protect MO-V from attack.

And then finds an unoccupied RX 78-2, jumps into the cockpit, and fights with some of his old moves including the horizontal beam saber slash exposing the cockpit, and fighting in the two handed beam saber position. Most of his character is one giant shoutout to Amuro.
