I don't think there is much room for character development in Recorder to Randsell, given its length. Also, the usual "Atsushi-is-a-pervert-that-must-be-apprehended" scene is used to death. It's odd and rather unrealistic that the police never keep record of him, despite his frequent presence in the station.

I'd suggest Wandering Son/Hourou Musuko it's really great and realistic SoL.
Also the Anime Movie Colorful too.

Hmm, well if it's just character-driven SOL, I think I can name two that immediately pop to mind: Diamond Daydreams and Piano. Enjoyment of both vary on how much you can accept the focus being mainly on girls -- take note, these shows are not "cute girls doing cute things" but stories that just so happen have female leads.

Alright after much deliberation and looking up reviews on MyAnimeList and Anime-Planet on all of the above, I've decided to take up (in order of watching first):
1. Nana 2. Maison Ikkoku (96 episodes..here we go) 3. Sakamichi no Apollon Thanks again |

I'm going to add Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. The female protagonist is a whiny 13-yo who grows quite a bit over the story.
In Sarai-ya Goyou ("House of Five Leaves") both male protagonists grow as characters through their friendship and coming to terms with their pasts. I'll also suggest Kurenai though it's a mixture of slice-of-life and drama. Lots of character development, though.

Just dropped Nana at ep. 44..really it started out well but just turned to crap around 10 episodes ago. I'm sure those who've seen it know what I'm talking about. Now they're just introducing more worthless side characters that I don't give a damn about and dragging it through. Plus I really hated how there were like 5 filler episodes.
Can't wait to start Maison Ikkoku now. Heard it's really, really good. |

Touch is the work of a younger man, and I think it's more fairy tale than CG - which is more of a bittersweet tone. All of Adachi's works have a basic similarity in that his character designs look a lot alike, and they deal with sports and complex emotional interplay. Apart from the superficial, though, I find CG and Touch to be very different.
