OP is real great, like the songs.
The characters were pretty shocking- at one moment, i thought Mayaya was a guy.

My comment- enjoyable. Added in my list. I don't really have many choices this season.

I hadn't realized Takahiro Omori directed so many superlative shows. Baccano!, Gakuen Alice, Natsume Yuujinchou... Not only is he establishing himself as one of the very best in the business, but also a director of amazing versatility.

A couple of notes on translation.

After Tsukimi first realizes he is a guy, and he calls himself "normal," the implication is that he is saying he is not gay.

Spoiler for Translation stuff, spoilered for length:

Tsukimi: オカマの人ですか？ (Are you an 'okama'?)

"Okama" can mean a cross-dresser but also a gay person. The implication is that she is asking him whether he is gay. To which he responds:

Kuranosuke: え？違うよ。女装は趣味でやってるだけ。俺、ノーマルだもん。(No, I just cross-dress [wear women's clothing] as a hobby. I'm normal.)

Now, "normal" can mean normal just as it does in English, but it can also be used to mean "straight sexual orientation," and it seems to me that in this case, it does mean straight.

Furthermore, later on he says:

Kuranosuke: 大丈夫、襲ったりしないから。(Don't worry, I won't do anything to you. [Literally: I won't attack you.] [Has a sexual implication])

It gives context to this statement if we assume earlier on he has asserted he is straight.

Earlier on, when Tsukimi is trying to sneak Kuranosuke into the apartment:

Tsukimi: 人種が違うというか、住んでる世界が違うというか。(We're different kinds of people, we live in different worlds.)
Kuranosuke: へー、やっぱり分かっちゃうんだな。(Eh, [you] understand after all.) (umee has "Okay, I think I get it.")

Like with many Japanese sentences, the subject is not explicitly specified, so it's possible to interpret the line either way. However, I think the better interpretation of his line here is that he believes that Tsukimi has figured out he is a cross-dresser, and this is why she doesn't want anyone to see him. It doesn't occur to him that a fashionable "lady" would be terribly out of place in Tsukimi's apartment complex.

Of course, at the time, in context, the meaning of this line isn't really clear, but I think when you reflect back on it after you know that he is a cross-dresser, it becomes clear.

This would help to explain his nonchalance later on, when he displays himself half-naked to Tsukimi, without any concern for how she might react. Then, he says "Oh, didn't I tell you [that I was a guy]?" He had assumed up to this point that she already knew.

Of all of the fall shows, Kuragehime is the one that I had the highest hopes for. The first episode certainly is the funnest opening episode this season.

Well, I gave Funi a few more days but dammit, I need my josei, legal streams or no. And I'm so happy I went ahead and checked this out, I'd been a little hesitant after I saw all the previews but, like a few other people said, it had more substance so I was really pleased with it. Knew about the twist but oh well, can't wait for the next episode!

Solid introduction episode, the OP and ED are amazing as well. It's interesting how this seasons features two shows with otaku heroines on both sides of the social extreme (Kirino the school idol, and Tsukimi the timid outcast)

ちゃう is also used often in Kansai-ben as a shorthand for 違う and I'm guessing it's where the usage in everyday speech in general caught on.It's definitely non-standard since I've really only seen it in anime/possibly in some manga I've read.

ちゃう is a contraction of てしまう. It expresses the idea of regret at an outcome, that the outcome was unexpected or just shouldn't have happened. So, it is "negative" in the sense of being "unfortunate." But 分かっちゃう still means 分かる (I understand), not 分からない (I don't understand).

Here's a page describing ちゃう.

I don't know why gg did it the way they did. I'm assuming it's simply an error or mishearing.

Incidentally, Kansai-ben also contracts てしまう, but they don't use ちゃう, but instead てまう. See here.

ちゃう　after a verb stem is very common short for てしまう (completely or unfortunately).　＞＞

Indeed it is - in fact that's what attracted me to this show at first, heh. Not too fond of loli fest or giant boobs here.

First episode was pretty enjoyable, and i can't wait to see more of Tsukimi and Kuranosuke, although my first impression of the other girls wasn't on the same level. I was surprised to learn that Mayaya is voiced by "Nami".

Also the OP is catchy and cute as hell.

That's hardly surprising, considering the art would instantly turn most people off, but hell Kuranosuke is freaking sexy .

I actually completely forgot the plot, so I was totally surprised when that happened. Was an entertaining watch so I'll definitely follow.
