'Game of Thrones' actor dies after 4 days of filming

Actor J.J. Murphy, of Northern Ireland is dead at 86, just days after filming his first scenes for Game of Thrones Season 5. He collapsed and died on Friday.

The Belfast Telegraph reports he also had a role in the soon-to-be-released Dracula movie, which was shot in Northern Ireland. In Game of Thrones, he was cast as Ser Denys Mallister, the oldest member of the Night's Watch in the hit HBO series.

"We will not be recasting J.J. Murphy," Thrones producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff said in a statement. "He was a lovely man, and the best Denys Mallister we could have hoped for. And now his watch is ended.”

In any case, the random fanfic ideas are bouncing around in my head again! Specifically a loosely formed Gate/Game of Thrones crossover. Basic concept is that at some point after

the gate closes on him, leaving him trapped in the Special region

, Youji finds a second portal similar to the gate, but not bound by that fancy arch the first one was based on, leading into a forest in a temperate region. Youji, possibly accompanied by a few others, most likely Lelei, Rory, and Tuka, drive their vehicle through the portal, assuming it leads them back to Earth, only for Youji to find himself in ANOTHER fantasy world.

I was planning on having Youji run Arya Stark, and whoever she is travelling with (depending on which season of GoT I decide to have Youji and company interrupt), and Youji ends up befriending ANOTHER fantasy world female with a vendetta, who naturally wants to unleash the new toys Youji brought to the fantasy world on her enemies.

Also, planning to include a scene where Youji manages to take an entire castle early in the series with the remaining gasoline in his vehicle (a Komatsu LAV for plot convenience, so arrows will just bounce off it), the remaining .50 cal ammo, and some C-4 and Panzerfausts left over from his mission to slay the ancient dragon.

Also since his ammo will eventually run out, I suspect, in the unlikely event I ever write this, Youji will be responsible for introducing gunpowder (in a simpler form, obviously, things like matchlock muskets and cannon) to Westeros. Also, plan to have him find an army from somewhere, likely the Brotherhood without Banners, complete with a leadership conflict between Youji Itami and Beric and Thoros (likely with Youji shooting him, only for Thoros to revive him a few times, only for Youji to finally realized he has to take out Thoros first)

Ser… no… Lieutenant Youji Itami’s weapon, the Howa Type 64 battle rifle, he called it, felt foreign and unwieldy in Arya Stark’s hand. The fact that she had to fire the weapon with her non-dominant right hand made it doubly uncomfortable. She definitely preferred the feel of her Needle to the foreigner’s weapon. Yet she saw the power of the rifle, a power the foreign man finally trusted her enough to wield.

Gendry, “Hot Pie” and about two-dozen men of the Brotherhood Without Banners looked on with interest as Youji instructed her in his powerful, mysterious weapon.

“Lean forward slightly, into the recoil, so you can push and pull against the recoil. Keep your legs apart, your left arm straight, keep your arm straight, and focus on the front sight”, Youji instructed her, before continuing, “Now, exhale, and slowly, but steadily pull the trigger. Don’t jerk it, or it will throw off your aim”.

Arya took a deep breath, and then slowly exhaled as she pulled back the trigger. The Howa Type 64 reported with the same “thunder” she had heard the night Youji had rescued her from Amory Lorch and his men, and released the same flash of “lighting from the barrel. The recoil of the rifle shocked Arya, and the barrel rose a good six inches at least. The bullet only grazed the side of the helmet on top of the straw target.

“Try that again”, Youji said.

Arya readied the weapon again, and took aim at the straw target on top. She pulled the trigger again, this time ready for the force the weapon produced on firing. The weapon kicked back, but this time, Arya was ready, pulling down with her left hand on the foreward grip, while pushing against the recoil with her right. This time, the 7.62mm NATO round struck the helmet just above the nose guard, and bored straight through it, coming out the other side, before embedding itself in a tree.

“Joffery”, Arya said.

Youji recognized it as the name of the corrupt king of this realm, a man Arya had expressed a desire to kill before. Quite frankly, Youji couldn’t blame her. The more he heard about this Joffery Baratheon, the more he reminded him of Zorzal, the bloodthirsty, slave-owning crown prince of the empire. For all his sadistic tendencies, however, Zorzal was quick to cave when he himself was faced with violence. Youji suspected Joffery might be the same in this regard.

Youji’s musings were interrupted by Arya firing his rifle a second time, this time hitting the straw “man” in the chest. After she fired, she said “Cersei”.

Finally, Arya fired a third shot, striking the straw man between the legs. “Illyn Payne”, said after firing the third shot.

“So, how was that?”, Arya asked.

“Excellent shooting”, Youji said, “For a first timer. But that rifle can hit targets over 100 yards away.”

The big new arrival for me this week was my copy of The World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and The Game of Thrones – which effectively acts as a sourcebook for George R.R. Martin’s magnum opus (and the HBO television series based on that series of books).

It’s got a detailed history of Westeros from the Dawn Age through to Robert’s Rebellion (with sections for each of the Targaryen kings to sit upon the Iron Throne), an overview of the Seven Kingdoms, and information on many of the lands beyond (such as the Free Cities, the Summer Isles, and more distant realms like Yi Ti and Asshai-by-the-Shadow).

Has anyone else here picked the book up, or has plans on doing so?

I should also note that the book seems to have been written with the maps from The Lands of Ice and Fire in mind. Some of the more distant realms have maps taken directly from that collection, while others have no maps shown (and likely assume you the reader have that set to go by).

As he admitted, if he changed the ending just because fans did their analysis properly, it will fatally undermine the whole series. He wrote the series based on sound logic and trains of thought (scale not withstanding).
