Yea focusing on ranking is kinda pointless. And Tenhou is marginally less terrible than Starcraft. XD You get too many internet know-it-alls.
And yakuman tend to be there or not. There is some marginal coincidence to suuankou/daisangen/kokushi since they do happen, the last one being somewhat practical. Also Itsu (1-9) was missing, though that really tells you how much I care about it. It's not a bad yaku, though on the slow side. It would be similar to single suit hands but easier.

You know things aren't going to go your way when you deal into a chankan -.-

>.> It was indeed bad luck and over the top of tenhou, but it was a pretty risky move, considering you're on a hell wait for your pair with so little draws left, and the guy has absolutely no man tiles in his discard pile. You could have tossed the 9 dots on turn 13 leaving your hand as 8999 sou, and waiting for both a 7 or 8. 8 would give you 5200, and then 7 would let you go out as needed.
There's a reason why I wrote a rant about the perils of toi toi.

Yeah, unfortunately, I realized that I should have kept the 8sou about 5 seconds after I discarded it. Tis what I get for playing while distracted at work, heh
Lots of "Discard this, proceed to check hand and discards, proceed to curse at self for being an idiot" |

You need Clinton in order to Double Kan properly. But either way man, that HAS to suck. Quote:
2) It's constricting, with the more tiles called 3) It's advisable not to go for Toi Toi, unless y'have at least 1 Ankou.

So I tried the Janryumon site and each match requires game points. I assume you'd have to pay to keep playing once you run out?
Anyhow, it was just an East Only game, won a baiman (suspicious?)-- North, East, Honitsu, toi toi, Dora 3 on the first round and that was all that was needed.

http://tenhou.net/0/?log=2013052619g...80ca6821b&tw=3 East 3-2 - He kan'd a good 6 or 7 turns after I riichi'd. His kan didn't even bring him into tenpai. He subsequently deals into me, and I get 5 ura dora because of it. South 3 - Another late Kan (granted, he was behind in points at this point), but the new dora was the Nan (which gave me 3 dora), and he subsequently dealt into a baiman. |

Chuuren is 5000x more rare than Kokushi, so yes it's much more rare. However, the 4 winds are still exceedingly rare.
3 1st places in the last 25 sessions. Oh great. In the past few sessions, I've only won a single hand. Of course I make 1 mistake and then some special olympics reject makes a dora pon and manages to tsumo at the very end.

Say, I'd like to ask, who among you guys already get the "bail out" mentality? From my experience and reading strategy articles, it really seems that riichi mahjong is more about 'not losing' rather than 'winning', and it has been said that being able to overcome the mental block of being reluctant to bail out is a milestone for a good riichi mahjong player.
I still have this mental block because, well, who doesn't like the feeling when winning? I actually have stopped playing mahjong for quite a while now because of the despair I felt between this mental predicament and constantly paying into other's hands.

Well it's because of the sadistic payout system.
1st place = Prize 2nd place = a little won 3rd place = a little lost 4th place = fuck you Mahjong was originally designed to be a cash game so it's not unusual for you to have this mentality. In riichi mahjong, it's tournament style, so scores are relative and you just want to have more than other people. Of course you can bail less as east, since... 1.) You win 50% more as east. 2.) Dealing in costs the same 3.) You lose more when someone self-draws. 4.) You get to continue being east. For example, take a look at this. I basically could have gotten third easily had I bailed on those 2 hands. Of course the player to my right was a douche, but that's a story for another day. http://tenhou.net/0/?log=2013052816g...-013881fe&tw=2

http://waml.harphield.com/index.php?p=a Out of 22 games for the league month, these are my percentage ratios: 1st 9.09 2nd 31.82 3rd 18.18 4th 40.91 This was a grim display of mahjong play. During this time period, I became so wrapped up with the whole ranking and placement thing -- such that -- winning games became a rarity. It was frustrating; and it was a good source of display. So for my games, that's all that I was thinking about. It's like having a weight on your shoulder, while playing. At the same time, for regular Tenhou ranking, I am one loss away from dropping from 2-dan to Shodan. Even that's pathetic. For this reason, I've avoided 0000 for a couple months. Sadly, my laptop adapter burnt out; and my Tenhou code remains within it. Once a new one arrives via shipping, I'll get right back on the saddle and play my games out - win or lose. In a sense, my mahjong activity from Anime Central gave me somewhat of a revive. Mahjong should be less about winning and losing - and instead be just about playing the game. In the meantime, I am playing off a "dummy name"; and I'm actually playing a bit looser. If y'manage to control that -- then it becomes a weapon.

Strangely enough 3baiman are rarer than certain yakuman:
Also, supposedly this has AI players that replicate Tenhou: http://homepage2.nifty.com/kmo2/ I admit it does feel like it, lol.
